Track Preview & Fantasy Angle

Michigan is a unique track in that it is the only two-mile track on the schedule since 2024, after Auto Club Speedway had its last race in 2023. It runs like a superspeedway but with no drafting like Talladega, Daytona, and Atlanta, and is also set up with 18 degrees of banking in the turns.

From a winning car standpoint, track/starting position has been very important lately, with the winner starting in the top 5 in each of the last three years. Last year was even more extreme, with seven of the top 8 finishers starting inside the top 10.

Looking at dominator vs. place differential trends in the NextGen era, I lean more towards place differential this week. We generally see a balance of laps led due to strategy, and this is a fuel management race for the most part. Only once has a driver led more than 52 laps in the four NextGen races, and it was William Byron leading 98 laps last year before running out of fuel and finishing 28th. There have been no fewer than seven drivers to tally double-digit place differentials with a high of 12 in 2022. When looking at optimal lineups over the last four races, a more balanced build has shown up at the top of contests frequently.

Top Pre-Qualifying Targets for DraftKings

Denny Hamlin ($11,000)

Hamlin comes in at #1 in my pre-qualifying rankings as he checks every box in my model. He won here last year and is the only driver to record three top 5’s and four top 10’s in the four races here in the NextGen era with an elite 4.0 average finish. Outside of Reddick, he has also been the hottest driver in the Cup series with a win, three top 5’s, and a 7.4 average finish over the last five races, and leads the series in laps led (756) on the season.

Ty Gibbs ($9,500)

Gibbs is another driver who checks all the boxes this week. Outside of the two DNF’s at Talladega and Texas, he has been one of the hottest drivers in the sport. He is coming off back-to-back top 6 finishes at Charlotte and Watkins Glen and has top 10 finishes in nine of his last 11 races, including that huge first career win at Bristol. He now returns to Michigan, which has been one of the best tracks in his early career, as he has not finished worse than 11th in any of his four starts and has finished 3rd in each of the last two years. The price is going up, but for good reason, as he looks like the third-best Toyota car behind Hamlin and Reddick.

Chris Buescher ($8,900)

I am higher on track history this week, and the Ford camp has been very good here at Michigan. Leading the way for me is Buescher, who, after a long run of mediocrity at the track, has found his groove, winning the 2023 race, finishing 6th in 2024, and was runner-up last year. He is coming off back-to-back down weeks at Nashville (29th) and Charlotte (30th), but has been consistent all year, ranking 10th in average finish on the season. He comes in at a nice sub $9K price at a track he has had a lot of recent success. One of my favourite mid-tier plays this week.

Shane van Gisbergen ($7,200)

He finished 18th in his first trip to Michigan a year ago and now returns with that experience with a car that is showing much more speed. The improvement outside of road courses has been a key story to watch in 2026. He followed up his Watkins Glen win with an 11th at Charlotte and a 5th last week at Nashville. He is one of four drivers to tally a top 20 in each of the last five races and is also 5th in average finish during that time. I love the price for a driver who I think has top 10 upside once again this week.

Zane Smith ($6,800)

Another value play that comes in checking a ton of boxes. Smith is right behind SVG in recent form rankings as his back-to-back top 10’s at Nashville and Charlotte have him 5th in average finish over the last five races. Combine that with 7th-place finishes here at Michigan in his first two career starts, and you have yourself the top value play at this point of the week.
