Snaps, Touches, and Targets Report from Week 4

Week 4 featured some rather large upset victories. Only four of 15 games home team held serve, with a whopping seven road dogs winning outright. For our purposes, there was plenty to pay attention to as well. Wayne Gallman saw an increase in usage due to Saquon Barkley’s injury and finished as the overall RB5 for the week. If you pay attention to how players are being used, it will make you a better fantasy player and enable you to grab gems like Gallman off the waiver wire. This week’s edition has plenty of news and notes surrounding virtually every fantasy-relevant player out there. So, without further ado, let’s get right to it. Here is the Week 4 snaps, touches, and target report, which features each player’s usage throughout the season.

The Cardinals had a relatively balanced attack which was odd considering that they trailed by double figures for most of the contest. David Johnson saw 11 targets in addition to 11 carries in Arizona’s loss. The targets, as well as Johnson’s 99 receiving yards, were more than twice as many as any other player on the team. The only negative for Johnson was that quarterback Kyler Murray ran for a score. Larry Fitzgerald and Christian Kirk had relatively quiet games, especially considering how this game played out. Each had just five targets which was well below their season averages. With Damiere Byrd inactive, neither KeeSean Johnson (2-19-0 on three targets) nor Trent Sherfield (1-15-0 on three targets) stepped up.

Atlanta got behind early against Tennessee, which essentially rendered the running game irrelevant. Devonta Freeman had just 28 rushing yards on 12 carries but salvaged his day by catching eight passes for 72 yards. Oddly enough, Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley were targeted on just 13 of Matt Ryan’s 53 passing attempts. It’s almost as if Tennessee realized they are Atlanta’s biggest assets on offense. Instead, they let Ryan dink and dunk to Austin Hooper (9-130 on 14 targets), Mohamed Sanu (9-91 on 12 targets), and Devonta Freeman (8-72 on nine targets). Considering how effective this strategy was, it will be interesting to see how future Falcons’ opponents game plan against Atlanta.

Baltimore ran the ball effectively early on, as Mark Ingram led the way with 12 carries for 71 yards. But the Ravens had to abandon the run to a large degree once they fell behind in the second half. Once again Marquise Brown and Mark Andrews led the team in targets. Andrews did have a score but totaled just 31 yards on his eight targets. Brown had just 22 scoreless yards on his seven targets. Willie Snead led the team in receiving yards, but he can be ignored. He turned a five-yard curl route into a meaningless 50-yard touchdown in the final minute. It was just his eighth catch on the year.

Frank Gore turned back the clock to 1973 with a 41-yard scamper that pushed him over the 15,000-yard barrier for his career. He handled 17 carries as Devin Singletary sat once again. T.J. Yeldon did not run the ball but did secure four passes. The Bills threw the ball a bunch in this game, which buoyed Cole Beasley and John Brown to an extent. Neither player scored, but they each saw at least 11 targets and combined for 144 receiving yards. Dawson Knox had another solid performance. The rookie tight end caught all three of his targets and now has at least three catches in three consecutive games. He may be worth streaming in the right matchups. Zay Jones had more targets (8) than receiving yards (4). That is never a good sign. Jones showed some flashes last season, but it has not translated to 2019 success.

Carolina made no bones about their intentions in their upset victory in Houston. They gave Christian McCaffrey a massive 37 touches in Sunday’s win. The rest of the team combined for just 15. McCaffrey now has 111 touches through a quarter of the season. With McCaffrey getting so much run on Sunday, the other weapons failed to make much of an impact. Nobody else managed to eclipse 60 yards or score a touchdown, as D.J. Moore, Curtis Samuel, and Greg Olsen all fell short of expectations. Kyle Allen will once again be under center when Carolina hosts Jacksonville. He has been effective, but I would still downgrade every player in this offense outside of McCaffrey a notch.

Mitch Trubisky was injured on Chicago’s first drive, which may have forced them to focus on the running game. The Bears ended up running the ball 33 times, with David Montgomery getting most of the work with 21 carries. He was not particularly effective, but Chicago was able to control the ball for 35:27 and won the game going away. Tarik Cohen scored the lone touchdown but still managed single-digit fantasy points, even in PPR leagues. He is borderline droppable. That goes for every member of this offense not named Montgomery or Allen Robinson. Robinson caught all seven targets from Chase Daniel and is averaging a solid, if unspectacular, 70 yards per game. He has yet to score in 2019 on a Bears team that has struggled to put up points. This makes him a bit dicier than most team’s primary receiver.

Cincinnati’s offense did not show up in a Monday night loss in Pittsburgh. The Steelers sacked Andy Dalton eight times and the passing game just could not get going. Joe Mixon handled 19 touches but had just 63 scoreless yards to show for it. Auden Tate led the team with 50 receiving yards. This is notable on a couple of fronts. First, it is the second consecutive game Tate has led the team in receiving. This mini hot streak occurred once Zac Taylor moved Tate to the “Z” receiver. Also, John Ross was injured in this game and is expected to be out for a month. Tate will be a popular waiver wire add as we head into Week 5. He and Tyler Boyd are the only reliable receivers Cincinnati has right now, and a prime matchup with Arizona awaits.

Cleveland came into Baltimore an offense on the ropes and exited with their heads held high after a dominating performance. Nick Chubb led the way with 165 yards and three scores on the ground. He also chipped in three receptions. Even when Kareem Hunt returns, it will be hard to scale back Chubb’s workload the way he is playing. Dontrell Hilliard added a rushing touchdown and two receptions as well. Jarvis Landry flat out abused Baltimore with eight receptions for 167 yards on 10 targets before suffering a concussion. Ricky Seals-Jones came from out of nowhere to secure all three targets for 82 yards and a touchdown. Despite the offensive explosion, Odell Beckham was nowhere to be found. The star wide receiver caught just two of seven targets for 20 yards. That’s the way the cookie crumbles sometimes.

If you thought Tony Pollard would remain a thorn in Ezekiel Elliott’s side in Week 4, you were sorely mistaken based on how each was used in Sunday night’s loss. Elliott touched the ball 24 times, which happened to be 24 more times than Pollard did. The bad news for Elliott was that his longest play from scrimmage was a 9-yard catch in the second quarter. He also lost a fumble two plays later. The usage, however, confirms that Elliott is once again a top-three running back in most weeks. Amari Cooper led the team with eight targets but was held in check and finished with just 48 receiving yards. No Cowboy exceeded 50 receiving yards as the Saints kept virtually everything in front of them.

Joe Flacco looked more than competent than normal as he eclipsed 300 yards against Jacksonville. Emmanuel Sanders and Courtland Sutton each had nine targets, with the latter scoring twice. Noah Fant also had a score, reeling in two of four balls thrown his way. The backfield work continues to be split. Phillip Lindsay had 10 touches for 60 yards while Royce Freeman had 10 for 50. Freeman’s 14 receptions in 2019 equal his season total from a year ago. But as long as they continue to cannibalize each other it will be difficult to trust either as more than a weekly Flex play depending on the matchup.

Detroit had a solid game plan that nearly enabled them to knock off Kansas City. The Lions ran the ball 35 times for 186 yards. Unfortunately, they fumbled twice, including Kerryon Johnson’s goal-line fumble that was returned for a score. The 14-point swing was more than enough in a four-point loss. Aside from the fumble, Johnson had a huge effort. For the second consecutive week, he set a career-high in rushing attempts. Following a quiet Week 3, Kenny Golladay had nine targets and found the end zone twice. Marvin Jones has another solid game with 77 yards on five targets. T.J. Hockenson had a touchdown but suffered a concussion and injured his shoulder, which will sideline him for the time being. Hockenson may be a drop depending on your needs.

Aaron Jones got nearly all the work in Green Bay’s backfield, but not in the way anyone wanted. Jamaal Williams was concussed on the first play from scrimmage and ruled out right away. Jones scored and touched the ball 19 times but finished with just 21 rushing yards on 13 carries. Davante Adams was targeted early and often as Aaron Rodgers took advantage of the Eagles beleaguered secondary. Adams ended the night with 10 catches for 180 yards on 15 targets. He did suffer an injury late in the loss that may force him to miss this week’s game. Marquez Valdes-Scantling again had more targets than Geronimo Allison, but Allison had the unit’s only touchdown. Jimmy Graham was featured heavily in this game. Graham posted a 6-61-1 line on nine targets, but it is hard to deem him a TE1 considering his scarce usage before Week 4.

Carlos Hyde continues to dominate touches and run the ball effectively. Hyde had 58 yards rushing and also added four catches. He is averaging 4.8 yards per rush and on pace for exactly 1,000 rushing yards. Despite getting only eight touches to Hyde’s 16, Duke Johnson outgained Hyde 78-64. He has performed well when given the chance. Still, it is difficult to trust Johnson as anything other than a desperation PPR Flex given his lack of consistent volume. DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller were, as usual, Deshaun Watson’s favorite targets, but once again disappointed on the stat sheet. Fuller is the overall WR65 in PPR leagues heading into Week 5. October should be a better month for this entire passing attack, with games against Atlanta, Kansas City, and Oakland on the horizon.

The Colts sputtered without their star wide receiver, T.Y. Hilton. Jacoby Brissett threw for three touchdowns but managed just 265 yards on 46 attempts. With Hilton gone, Brissett spread the wealth. Six different players had between five and eight targets. Zach Pascal led the way with 72 yards but did not score. If Hilton remains out this week, tight ends Eric Ebron (1-48-1) and Jack Doyle (4-22-1) are most likely to benefit. Marlon Mack had a season-low 11 touches last week as the Colts were playing from behind throughout. Mack should be plenty busy in a Week 5 matchup against the Chiefs. The Colts will need to establish the run to have a chance, especially if Hilton is forced to sit another week.

Before Sunday, the only saving grace for Leonard Fournette owners was his reliable volume, as he had not produced a rather pedestrian 4.16 yards per carry. What a difference a day makes. On Sunday we saw precisely why opportunity is so important in fantasy football. Fournette demolished Denver for 225 rushing yards on 29 carries. Ryquell Armstead had 42 rushing yards and a touchdown catch in his own right. With the running game clicking on all cylinders, there was not a lot of meat left on the bone for Jacksonville’s receivers. D.J. Chark led the way with eight targets and produced 44 yards. Dede Westbrook had his most efficient outing with five catches and 66 yards. James O’Shaughnessy caught his second touchdown pass of the year as he continues to split reps with Geoff Swaim.

It’s pretty scary to think that the Chiefs put up 34 points despite three lost fumbles and without Patrick Mahomes accounting for a single score. Mahomes was held relatively in check but still surpassed 300 yards. Demarcus Robinson led the way with nine targets but finished fifth on the team with 35 receiving yards. Travis Kelce has eclipsed 80 receiving yards in every game, though he has only scored once so far. LeSean McCoy again looked solid, as his 13 touches led to 89 total yards. He scored a short touchdown, but Darrel Williams turned the trick twice, including the game-winning score. The touchdowns made Williams’ day, as he managed just 13 rushing yards on eight attempts. Damien Williams was out for a second consecutive week. At this point, it is anyone’s guess as to what his role will be upon his return.

The big story before the game was Melvin Gordon ending his holdout and returning to the team. Gordon was active but did not play. Austin Ekeler again was superb on 23 touches. Ekeler has had at least 36 yards rushing and 45 yards receiving in each game. It appears, however, as though his bell-cow days are over with Gordon back in the fold. I still expect him to get 10-12 touches per game, but he will likely no longer be a fantasy RB1. Troymaine Pope caught a touchdown to go along with 10 carries. Consider this a one-off with Gordon back in tow. Dontrelle Inman led the team in yards and targets as Miami clamped down on Keenan Allen. This was an anomaly, as Mike Williams was out due to his balky knee. Inman had just three receptions and six targets through his first three games.

Jared Goff dropped back to pass 70 (no, not a typo) times as the Rams fell behind early and gave up on the running game. Goff threw for 517 yards, tied for eighth-most in NFL history. However, he did not play particularly well. Todd Gurley had more than twice as many targets (11) as carries (5). Gurley did run for two scores while finishing as the RB8 for the week. He was among six players who were targeted at least seven times. Brandin Cooks was targeted nine times and finished as a WR2, while Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp each finished as top-four wide receivers. The trio likely would have thrived under normal circumstances, but the game flow boosted their usage even more. Even tight ends Gerald Everett and Tyler Higbee got in on the act. Each eclipsed 40 receiving yards, while Everett caught a touchdown pass.

Miami was able to keep this game relatively close throughout the first half. As a result, Kenyan Drake had a season-high 44 (also not a typo) yards rushing. Small victories, folks. Perhaps more interesting is that it appears Miami has finally demoted Kalen Ballage to third-string. Ballage saw just eight snaps and two carries, while Mark Walton was in on 13 snaps and touched the ball eight times. Walton had an 11-yard run which is the longest run from scrimmage Miami has had this season. Preston Williams again led the team in targets, though DeVante Parker scored Miami’s only touchdown of the day. Neither wide receiver has great upside, but both may be viable when Miami returns to action in Week 6 to take on Washington. Albert Wilson may also be in the mix by that time.

Minnesota struggled to establish any kind of offensive rhythm in their Week 4 loss in Chicago. Kirk Cousins completed 75 percent of his passes, but that does not tell the whole story. He averaged just 6.5 yards per attempt and missed several plays down the field. Stefon Diggs caught all seven of his targets for 108 yards, which made owners feel better about his slow start to the season. Adam Thielen had just two catches for six yards on six targets. He was the primary victim of Cousins’ inaccuracy. Dalvin Cook scored a late touchdown which salvaged his day, but he was swarmed by Chicago’s defense all afternoon. Cook also led the team with eight targets. The Bears focused on Cook and dared Cousins to beat them, which proved to be a winning formula.

New England went with a very short rotation of skill players in their Week 4 victory. Sony Michel was the only player who ran the ball more than once. No, I’m not counting Tom Brady’s three kneel-downs to end the game. Naturally, Brandon Bolden scored a touchdown on his only touch of the day, putting Michel owners on full tilt. On the passing side, James White led the way with 10 targets and eight receptions. The trio of Julian Edelman, Josh Gordon, and Phillip Dorsett was targeted between seven and nine times. Rex Burkhead, who had 17 touches in Week 3, caught his only target for seven yards while playing just 12 snaps. The Patriots got virtually nothing done in the passing game against Buffalo’s tough defense. Things will open up much more this week against Washington.

New Orleans earned a gritty victory against Dallas by continuing to utilize their two best players with Drew Brees out due to injury. Alvin Kamara had 17 carries, while he and Michael Thomas secured all 12 passes thrown their way. It was somewhat encouraging to see Jared Cook targeted six times, but he did not produce, finishing with just three catches for 21 yards. It is becoming increasingly difficult to trust Cook at this point. Ditto for Ted Ginn, who turned five targets into a middling 3-19-0 line. Kamara and Thomas are the only Saints you want a part of for now. That may even be the case upon Brees’ eventual return.

Wayne Gallman served himself well as Saquon Barkley’s understudy in New York’s Week 4 win. Gallman logged 47 snaps and touched the ball on over half of them. He totaled 118 yards and scored two touchdowns. He did have a late fumble, but it was an otherwise solid effort. The Giants promoted Jonathan Hilliman from the practice squad and he had 10 carries. However, he too lost a fumble, so his stint as the backup may be short-lived. Golden Tate is returning to the lineup this week following suspension. The Giants released both Bennie Fowler and T.J. Jones this week. Fowler’s release was a bit of a surprise in my opinion. He was second among Giants receivers in snaps, targets, and receiving yards through four weeks. The passing offense figures to revolve around Tate, Sterling Shepard, and Evan Engram.

Oakland surprised a lot of people including me by going into Indianapolis and defeating the Colts. This was no fluke, as the Raiders led throughout and by double digits for most of the way. The favorable game script allowed Josh Jacobs to remain involved throughout, and he did not disappoint. Jacobs eclipsed 100 total yards on his 19 touches. Darren Waller continued to be a safety valve for Derek Carr as he caught seven of eight balls thrown his way. Tyrell Williams had seven targets and is the only player in the NFL to catch a touchdown in each of the season’s first four weeks. His volume, however, suggests he is closer to a WR3 than a WR2.

Philadelphia upset Green Bay on the strength of their running game in Week 4. Jordan Howard was the team’s featured weapon and he responded with three touchdowns. Howard had season-highs in virtually every statistical category including snap count, carries, and receptions. Miles Sanders posted a solid effort with 72 yards on his 11 carries. Alshon Jeffery returned to the lineup and led the team with nine targets. He was on the receiving end of one of Carson Wentz’s three touchdown passes. Zach Ertz led the Eagles in receptions and receiving yards, but it was Dallas Goedert who found the end zone. Despite DeSean Jackson being inactive once again, Nelson Agholor was targeted just once. He may have lost some of the confidence of his coaching staff and quarterback following a couple of big drops in earlier games.

Pittsburgh featured Jaylen Samuels in the wildcat and utilized the short passing game to dispose of the Bengals on Monday night. Samuels and James Conner each had 10 carries and caught all eight of their targets. Three of Conner’s receptions were courtesy of Samuels, who took the direct snap and delivered pop passes to a motioning Conner. Diontae Johnson overcame an early fumble to finish with 77 yards and a touchdown on six targets. Juju Smith-Schuster had a disappointing night with just 15 yards on four targets. Considering how good the rest of the offense took to this game plan, you have to wonder if Smith-Schuster has more days like this in store.

Seattle used a balanced attack to get past Arizona in Week 4. With Rashaad Penny again inactive, it was the Chris Carson show. The second-year back had 22 carries and added four receptions. He did not score, as he was vultured by C.J. Prosise, but he did manage to hold onto the ball. The outing may allow Carson to remain the lead back when Penny returns. With Seattle out in front early, it was a pretty quiet day for the pass catchers. Tight end Will Dissly continued his breakout campaign against the Cardinals, who simply cannot cover the position. Dissly led all Seahawks in receptions, yards, and targets, and caught Russell Wilson’s only touchdown of the day. Tyler Lockett and Jaron Brown caught all their targets, but for just 51 and 50 yards, respectively. D.K. Metcalf had just one catch for six yards on four targets.

Tampa Bay pulled off quite the shocker when they went into Los Angeles and took care of the Rams. The Rams had been sporting a pretty stingy pass defense, but Jameis Winston ripped them to shreds. Winston threw for 385 yards and four touchdown passes. Chris Godwin did most of the damage, hauling in 12 of 14 targets for 172 yards and two scores. Mike Evans caught a touchdown pass, as did Cameron Brate. Brate and O.J. Howard were each targeted three times despite Howard being in on 47 more plays. As of right now, it does not appear that Howard is going to reach the lofty expectations many of us had for him coming into the year. For the third time in four weeks, Ronald Jones was the Bucs’ best back. He out-touched Peyton Barber 20-9, and each ran for a touchdown.

Tennessee defeated Atlanta in yet another upset on Sunday. The Titans executed an effective mix of the running game and the passing game in the victory. Derrick Henry did not score but had 27 carries and exceeded 100 total yards from scrimmage. Corey Davis finally had a breakout performance. He had five grabs for 91 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown. A.J. Brown only had three targets, but he certainly made them count. Brown caught two touchdown passes and finished with 94 receiving yards. With Tennessee up by multiple touchdowns throughout the second half, they took the air out of the ball with Henry. No other Titan had more than 15 receiving yards, with Delanie Walker (1-4-0) falling well short of projections.

Washington laid an egg against what had been a Giants defense that had been pretty beatable before Sunday. Their quarterbacks struggled mightily, and it trickled down to the rest of the team. Adrian Peterson was ineffective, finishing with just 28 yards on 11 carries. He was phased out in the second half by negative game script. He has just 90 rushing yards in three games and will only be worth starting in positive matchups, which figure to be lacking for Washington this season. Chris Thompson benefited, as he led the team with 56 receiving yards. Terry McLaurin was inactive due to a hamstring injury, and the rest of the receivers failed to step up in his absence. The entire group (Paul Richardson, Kelvin Harmon, Robert Davis, and Trey Quinn) combined to catch eight of 13 targets for 49 yards.
