Week 14 College Fantasy Football Waiver Wire and Sleepers

To all my CFF teammates…Happy Thanksgiving! I hope that you have enjoyed the season as much as I have this year. If you are reading this column, I bet that you have reached the Championship game in your respective leagues. Congrats and good luck over the weekend. Hopefully, my College Fantasy Football Waiver Wire column will be a reason for thanks after this weekend.

College Fantasy Football Waiver Wire & Sleepers

Quarterbacks

QB Shai Werts, Georgia Southern
Fantrax Ownership Percentage: 8%

In the past three weeks, Shai Werts is the eleventh most productive quarterback in college fantasy football, scoring 91.1 points. The dual-threat playmaker has passed for 436 yards, rushed for 233 yards and totaled 10 touchdowns. The redshirt junior endured a rocky start to the season after an arrest for bird droppings on the hood of his car in which police officers proclaimed was cocaine after a false positive from a cheap test kit. He has overcome the off-the-field challenge to rank among the finest quarterbacks in Sun Belt. Georgia Southern host cross-state rival Georgia State, and the Panthers defense hemorrhages fantasy production to opponents, allowing over 450 yards and 35.9 points per game.

RB George Holani, Boise State
Fantrax Ownership Percentage: 29%

Looking at the ownership percentage, it is clear that CFF managers have not been paying attention to the numbers that the Boise State offense produces every week. The Broncos score 37.9 points and average 457 yards per game. In November, George Holani ranks among the dozen best CFF running backs. In two of the last four games, he has exceeded 31 fantasy points and rushed for 407 yards and scored eight times. Boise State concludes the campaign at Colorado State, and the Rams have allowed over 200 rushing yards per game and yielded 21 rushing touchdowns.

WR Frank Darby, Arizona State
Fantrax Ownership Percentage: 7%

I have invested many hours in front of the TV watching Arizona State this season. First, I wanted to scout RB Eno Benjamin; second, freshman QB Jayden Daniels caught my eye; and third, Brandon Aiyuk jumped off the screen hitting home runs. Finally, Frank Darby can no longer be ignored. Since October, the junior has flashed elite playmaking skills for the Sun Devils. He has 16 catches for 387 yards and seven touchdowns. Wow! Arizona State hosts in-state opponent Arizona in the Duel in the Desert for the Territorial Cup on Saturday. The Wildcats are among the bottom dwellers in the nation against the pass, and the Sun Devils’ aerial assault will light up the night.

Sleeper QBs

John Rhys Plumlee, Mississippi at Mississippi State: O/U 58 & Mississippi State -2.5
Fantrax Ownership Percentage: 25%
Opponent Defense vs. Pass: #84 (241 ypg.)
Opponent Points Allowed: 28.8 ppg.

In the Week 6 Waiver Wire Gemstones column, my CFF: On Campus teammate Justin Heisey cajoled readers to acquire John Rhys Plumlee, who was only owned on 5% teams, off the waiver wire. Justin correctly prophesied Plumlee’s success “As long as Plumlee is taking 20-plus carries a game, he’s a fantasy stud. He takes on a Missouri defense that struggles against mobile quarterbacks this week, and he has favorable matchups against New Mexico State, LSU, and Mississippi State the last six weeks of the season.”

In the past five games, the freshman game-breaker has scored 38.4, 4.35, 18.5, 35.9 and 50.3 fantasy points. Against LSU two weeks ago, he shocked CFF diehards with 212 yards on the ground with four rushing touchdowns. Since Justin’s profile, the dual-threat has rushed for 662 yards, passed for 467 yards and totaled 11 touchdowns. In the Egg Bowl, the Rebels travel to their long-time rival the Bulldogs, and Vegas projects a close game with nearly eight touchdowns scored between the two programs. Plumlee’s ceiling is sky high, and he has a solid floor based on his running skills.

Additional QB Sleeper:

Jayden Daniels, Arizona State vs. Arizona: O/U 59 & Arizona State -14
Fantrax Ownership Percentage: 29%
Opponent Defense vs. Pass: #128 (306.7 ypg.)
Opponent Points Allowed: 36.8 ppg.

Identify a sleeper at quarterback to capture a CFF title.

  • Chris Reynolds, Charlotte at Old Dominion: 9%
  • Jayden Daniels, Arizona State vs. Arizona: 74%
  • Tommy Stephens, Mississippi State vs. Mississippi: 9%
  • Kyle Trask, Florida vs. Florida State: 8%
    John’s Vote: Jayden Daniels

“I’m hoping it’s a sleeper not listed…Jett Duffy versus Texas.” @Andy22Moore

Senior Bowl invites have been extended to many tight ends. Identify the senior who has impressed you the most this season at the position:

  • Jared Pinkney, Vanderbilt: 13%
  • Brycen Hopkins, Purdue: 51%
  • Harrison Bryant, FAU: 27%
  • Josiah Deguara, Cincinnati: 9%
  • John’s Vote: Harrison Bryant

“The Vandy offense’s use of J. Pinkney has depressed me this season. To go from 50-774-7 last year to 20-233-2 (with some missed games) so far this year is criminal.” @FBSFantasyFoot

“Yeah, Pickney has been a terrible fantasy asset this year, and was a big draft bust.” @sportsdatastuff

Running Back

Journey Brown, Penn State vs. Rutgers: O/U 52 & Penn State -41
Fantrax Ownership Percentage: 11%
Opponent Defense vs. Run: #107 (196.5 ypg.)
Opponent Points Allowed: 37.5 ppg.

Penn State has been one of the surprise teams of the season, and the offense scores 35 points while averaging 408.5 yards per game. Journey Brown leads the ground game with 585 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 6.0 yards per carry.

It took a while for the coaching staff to turn the reins of the rushing attack over to Brown, who has garnered double-digit carries in each of the past four games and eclipsed 100-yards rushing twice. In the last three weeks, the Nittany Lions’ ball carrier stands among the Top 20 CFF runners with 322 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns, scoring 58.7 fantasy points. Go ahead and start Brown in a smash matchup versus the Scarlet Knights.

Additional RB Sleepers:

  • Caleb Huntley, Ball State vs. Miami (OH): O/U 56 & Ball State -3
    Fantrax Ownership Percentage: 31%
Opponent Defense vs. Run: #82 (173 ppg.)
    Opponent Points Allowed: 27.7
  • Re’Mahn Davis, Temple vs. UConn: O/U 49.5 & Temple -27
    Fantrax Ownership Percentage: 29%
Opponent Defense vs. Run: #121 (220.1)
    Opponent Points Allowed: 39.7 ppg.

Pinpoint an under-the-radar running back to insert into flex positions to capture a ring.

  • DeJon Packer, SJSU vs. Fresno: 4%
  • Frankie Hickson, Liberty vs. New Mexico State: 24%
  • George Holani, Boise State at Colorado State: 43%
  • Re’Mahn Davis, Temple vs. UConn: 29%
    John’s Vote: Re’Mahn Davis

“With Jager Gardner out with a broken ankle, R. Davis should get all the carries vs. UConn. Excellent matchup.” @CFBWinningEdge

“F. Hickson!! I was just looking at him. Had a dream he scored TWICE!!” @aceholesrule

“I am looking for a reasonable floor when weighing options such as these, and G. Holani gets the nod over D. Packer for the longer track record and quality of opponent. Don’t sleep on Packer though, as his use as a receiver out of the backfield enhances his floor in PPR leagues.” @KrazyCeltic

“G. Holani! That’s my dude.” @KHookem

“Of these four, F. Hickson is my pick, but I also like O’Shaan Allison of the Ohio Bobcats vs. Akron.” @JustinNottingh6

“Has to be R. Davis with the news J. Gardner is out. He’ll get a full workload versus those abysmal Huskies of ours.” @MacDaddy178

Identify the freshman running back who you will likely rank higher in CFF Drafts next summer:

  • Breece Hall, Iowa State: 35%
  • Kenneth Gainwell, Memphis: 54%
  • Javian Hawkins, Louisville: 4%
  • Isaiah Spiller, Texas A&M: 7%
    John’s Vote: Breece Hall

“K. Gainwell, Memphis: He is a dual-threat back playing in the AAC, he was a beast this year, just imagine an off season in the weight room. This guy will be a force for the next couple of years.” @JustinNottingh6

“Gainwell for me, easily. Even with other playmakers on his team, Gainwell is a threat for 100 & 1 or 200 & 2 in any given game.” @KrazyCeltic

“There are quite a few freshmen running backs I would put ahead of I. Spiller for next yr. If Jashaun Corbin is healthy, I don’t believe Spiller is the best ball carrier on his own team.” @CFFNate

“K. Gainwell by a smidge. B. Hall is absolutely legit and there will be another back that emerges to have a RBBC in Memphis next year. He benefited from being a one-horse backfield this year.  Won’t happen next.” @aceholesrule

“I voted Gainwell. I like Hawkins and Hall quite a bit also. I don’t know what Spiller’s role will be next year.” @brockretz

Wide Receiver

Cody White, Michigan State vs. Maryland: O/U 48.5 & Michigan State -22
Fantrax Ownership Percentage: 18%
Opponent Defense vs. Pass: #112 (264.8 ypg.)
Opponent Points Allowed: 36.1 ppg.

The Spartans have not provided many CFF starters this season; however, Cody White has emerged as a viable asset down the stretch. Moving into the slot against Rutgers, the junior enjoyed a career-best afternoon with 11 catches for 136 yards and three touchdowns. In the past three games, the 6-foot-3, 215-pounder has snatched 24 passes for 342 yards, and this year, has totaled 54 catches for 741 yards. Michigan State easily beats Maryland on Saturday, and White enjoys another highly-productive afternoon.

Additional WR Sleeper:

  • Siaosi Mariner, Utah State at New Mexico: O/U 61 &  Utah State -11.5
    Fantrax Ownership Percentage: 18%
Opponent Defense vs. Pass: #130 (335 ypg.)
    Opponent Points Allowed: 37.1 ypg.

With a CFF title on the line, who are you starting and inserting into lineups at wide receiver/tight end?

  • Siaosi Mariner, Utah State at New Mexico: 41%
  • Brant Kuithe, Utah vs. Colorado: 22%
  • Darnell Mooney, Tulane at SMU: 15%
  • Cody White, Michigan State vs. Maryland: 22%
    John’s Vote: Siaosi Mariner

“S. Mariner is the clear No. 1 option for Utah State, and New Mexico has struggled mightily vs. the pass. Solid matchup.” @CFBWinningEdge

“B. Kuithe won me one playoff game and lost me another when deployed by an opponent. I trust him to help bring me the championship trophy as he faces another bottom-five pass defense this week.” @KrazyCeltic

“I am going with C. White of MSU. He had a monster game last week with three TDs, and gets Maryland this week, a tasty matchup for the #CFF Championship Week.” @JustinNottingh6
