Starting Pitcher Barometer, Week 11: Confounding Ranks

We're switching things up a little bit this week. We've reached a point in the season where there is some stability in these starting pitcher rankings now. There is some movement within the top 30, but we generally know that crew. SP31-50 is a fairly consistent group. After that, all bets are off in the streaming and deep league tiers. That's still an improvement. However, this week we didn't get a ton of call-ups, and there isn't a large swatch of movement. Instead of talking risers, fallers, and newcomers, this week I'm…

Starting Pitcher Barometer, Week 10: Chris Archer Should’ve Been A Swordsman

Any week I get to add more starting pitchers to the list than I drop off is a good week. We did lose Luke Weaver for what looks like an extended period of time, which gives me a case of the sads. For now, it doesn't sound like Tommy John, but we know forearm strains are often a precursor to that. Stash candidate Forrest Whitley is on the minor league IL with shoulder fatigue, pushing back his ETA by a solid month at least. Another stash candidate from last week, Mitch Keller, did get the call. He got rocked and sent right…

Fire & Ice: Avisail Garcia & Amed Rosario

As we prepare to close the book on May, the focus of this series shifts a bit. It will shift from full season stats to focus more on the recent 30 days or so. It might seem a little hypocritical as a Sabermetric analyst to shoot down small sample sizes and then focus on more small samples. There is a fine line between noise and trends that I will try to toe the rest of the way. There are some divergent trends with these two players today. Let's take a look and see if it's anything that we can expect to carry on the rest of…

Starting Pitcher Barometer, Week 9: Stashin’ Time

Call up season has been insane so far...for the hitters. The pitching side has been largely bereft of impact from the minor leagues. One starting pitcher you might be able to nab in shallower leagues who isn't a prospect is Andrew Heaney. He's finally on the mend and struck out 10 batters across 4.1 scoreless frames in a rehab start at Triple-A. He can be an impact starter when he's on the mound. Briefly, here are some other starters worth a stash.Zach Gallen, MIA - Video game numbers over his first 60.1 IP at…

Fire & Ice: Zach Davies & Joey Votto

We're creeping towards the end of May, fully through the first quarter of the season. No standings are set in stone just yet, but it's time we make some important roster decisions. Some of the stars we drafted haven't been cutting the proverbial mustard, and you know me, I prefer my mustard cut. We'll dig into one such star in Joey Votto, but first, let's catch fire in the form of Zach Davies. On a side note, I'm putting this together on the day Game of Thrones airs its finale. The title of this series, Fire & Ice, is…

Starting Pitcher Barometer, Week 8: Faulty Foltynewicz

It's a rough week to begin with when you lose a guy nicknamed Lasagna. It gets exponentially worse when a guy like Julio Urias, who we've been rooting for and waiting on for so long, gets suspended. His alleged conduct makes me want to jump off the train immediately, and for redraft purposes, you can. Dynasty is a trickier beast. If I can find someone who is willing to pay for him as a future top 30-40 starting pitcher, I'd be willing to sell. Of course, the curse heard 'round the world was from every Tyler Glasnow owner…
