Cross’ Prospect to Target: Benny Montgomery
Honestly, there aren’t many prospects I’m targeting in this lackluster system so I’m going to go with one of the most toolsy prospects in baseball, 2021 first-round selection, Benny Montgomery. The upside is very apparent with Montgomery who might have the highest fantasy ceiling in the entire 2021 class. A class that was led by four dynamic shortstop prospects along with Jack Leiter, Seiya Suzuki, and Henry Davis. But while Montgomery possesses immense upside, he’s also one of the least polished bats in the class as well.
A former multi-sport athlete, Montgomery has plus or better raw power and speed, but the hit tool, contact skills, and pitch recognition are still all a work in progress. Surprisingly, he’s gotten on-base at a .386 clip through his first 88 PA and has only struck out 20.5% of the time, but it’s a small sample size and I want to see more before moving him higher in my prospect rankings. But if that hit tool does come along, Montgomery has the power/speed blend to shoot up into the top-25 overall in a hurry.
Clegg’s Prospect to Target: Ezequiel Tovar
Ezequiel Tovar is a prospect who feels like he has been up and down prospect rankings and is valued different by everyone you talk to. Prior to 2021, Tovar was a switch hitter but dropped it completely to hit solely right-handed and the results paid off.
Tovar slashed .287/.322/.475 with 15 home runs, 23 stolen bases, and 33 doubles and triples. Eric and I saw him live in several games in the AFL. He has posted exit velocities over 110 mph several times in his career, including Spring Training, where he hit three home runs in 20 plate appearances. Tovar makes good contact, posting an 87.2 percent contact rate in Low-A last year and was at 85.8 percent in High-A.
Tovar has a great glove and arm which should allow him to advance through the system and keep him in the lineup. His contact skills are great, and if the power gains come and stick, we could be looking at a solid fantasy asset. Now is the time to buy Tovar before the price tag takes off.
