Fantasy Football Draft Strategy for Two-QB Leagues

There’s no better way to diversify your fandom/knowledge than entering multiple fantasy football leagues. But if you’re a real sicko…and I know you are (why else would you be on FantraxHQ.com?). You’ve entered multiple fantasy leagues, with multiple draft formats. As we near the start of the 2024 NFL Season, let’s take a quick dive into Two QB Fantasy Draft Strategy, and the optimal way to go about drafting the best roster.

What!? Your fantasy football league wasn’t hosted on Fantrax last season!? Once you see how Fantrax stacks up to the competition, we think you’ll be singing a different tune in the 2024 season.

Draft Strategy for Two-QB Leagues

Roster Construction

The main difference between standard fantasy leagues, and 2 QB leagues, is that your starting lineup construction is going to be completely different. In a standard league, it’s QB/RB/RB/WR/WR/FLEX. In a 2QB league, it’s QB/QB/RB/WR/FLEX/FLEX. With that change, should come a change in your draft priorities. If you MUST start two QBs, then the supply of fantasy-worthy QBs is likely to be gone by the third round.

Draft Your Starting QBs Early

I know it’s counterintuitive, but ignore the availability of Christian McCaffrey. Don’t let Justin Jefferson catch your eyes. Drafting either of those elite, (standard fantasy draft) top picks is dealing a devastating blow to your chances of winning the league. Let someone else decide that they have “fallen” to them. If you MUST start two QBs, you MUST have two starting QBs. That means your first-round pick will be an “elite” fantasy QB, while your 2nd starter should be a tier below.

Remember, while you won’t really be able to find depth for a running back, you’ll have a chance with later rounds and injuries to acquire a starting caliber running back. With QBs, in a 2QB league, there’s little to no chance that you find a starter after Round 3. It’s a necessity to adjust the normal mindset.

QB Tiers

Tier 1 (Must-Draft 1st Round QB Options):

  1. Josh Allen
  2. Jalen Hurts
  3. Dak Prescott
  4. Lamar Jackson
  5. Jordan Love
  6. CJ Stroud
  7. Kyler Murray
  8. Patrick Mahomes
  9. Jared Goff
  10. Joe Burrow

Tier 2 (Must-Draft 2nd Round QB Options):

  1. Brock Purdy
  2. Matthew Stafford
  3. Tua Tagovailoa
  4. Russell Wilson
  5. Baker Mayfield
  6. Trevor Lawrence
  7. Kirk Cousins
  8. Geno Smith
  9. Justin Herbert
  10. Aaron Rodgers

Avoid the Rookies

The QB position is likely to be the leading scoring position on your roster each week. That said, I tend to avoid rookies in my roster construction as each week is a new learning experience for even the most prolific rookies. Don’t let CJ Stroud’s past year give you rose-colored lenses. I know Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels are having excellent preseasons, but preseason football is not how you judge a player. The defenses aren’t sophisticated, and the amount of preparation that goes into making sure “player X” doesn’t beat you, is minimal compared to the regular season. Rookies tend to struggle. You don’t want to risk a struggling season from your top two picks of the fantasy draft. Those picks should be your least risky.

Grab another QB for Bye Weeks/Injuries

Pay attention to how the rest of your league is drafting in their first two picks. If you’re seeing running backs and receivers go off the board, make sure to grab a third quarterback, as it provides depth that your competitors will not have. Especially if you see a Tier 1 or Tier 2 QB still available when your third pick comes around. If all those QBs are gone, you should fill out the rest of your starters as you normally would in a standard league (running backs most scarce, then WRs and TEs).

I like this article. I would just ask you to add a print button because it would be nice not to waste ink on the picture and to get a clean copy to read and use on draft day. Please. That would really help.
