Week 9 Fantasy Hockey Waiver Wire
Forwards
Viktor Arvidsson, RW, Los Angeles Kings (61% Rostered)
Arvidsson had his five-game point streak snapped Monday night, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s having a productive year. He has 12 points in 17 appearances, which is a much better pace than last year’s 25 points in 55 games, or the year before where he had 28 points in 57 games. Playing in a top-six role and top power-play unit, Arvidsson is making the most out of his fresh start in LA.
Pius Suter, C/LW, Detroit Red Wings (27% Rostered)
After enduring a four-game point drought, Suter has followed that up with an ongoing six-game point streak. He’s compiled a goal and five assists, with two of those points scored on the man advantage. He has 13 points through 26 contests, which is a similar pace to last year’s rookie campaign of 27 points in 55 games. Suter is centering the Red Wings’ second line and first power-play unit, putting him in a good position to continue, if not improve that point pace.
Nick Ritchie, LW, Toronto Maple Leafs (24% Rostered)
The power forward had a slow start to his Maple Leafs tenure, netting just two points in his first 19 games. He’s finding his groove though, as he’s scored a goal and five assists in his last eight contests. This includes an ongoing four-game point streak. Three of his points have come from the power play, and he has 19 PIM, 43 shots, and 61 hits on the year.
Kyle Okposo, RW, Buffalo Sabres (22% Rostered)
Similar to Arvidsson, Okposo just had a six-game point streak snapped Tuesday night. In total, he has six goals and 17 points in 25 meetings. That’s four more points in 10 fewer games from last year, and just two points shy of his 2019-20 total, in less than half the games. He’s scoring at a 55-point pace, which would eclipse his point total from every other season in his six years as a Sabre. Considering his health concerns in the past, there were some questions as to how long he’d have left in the NHL. It’s great to see that not only is he still playing, but he’s also thriving and having one of the best seasons of his career.
Maxim Mamin, C/RW, Florida Panthers (3% Rostered)
Mamin has had an unusual career thus far. He played 26 games for the Panthers back in 2017-18, then seven contests in 2018-19. He then went to play overseas for a couple of years, before rejoining the Panthers organization this season. Where does he find himself on Florida’s depth chart? Currently on the top line with the recently returned Aleksander Barkov. This alone makes Mamin worth taking a chance on from the waiver wire. But on top of that, he has five points in 10 appearances, 14 shots, 17 hits, and a plus-3 rating.
Defense
Adam Boqvist, D, Columbus Blue Jackets (55% Rostered)
Boqvist has six goals and nine points in 17 contests, with eight of those points being scored in his past eight outings. His six goals are tied for fourth among blueliners. He doesn’t have great category coverage, with two PIM, 23 shots, 11 blocks, six hits, and a minus-1 rating. However, if you need offense from your defense, in particular goals, Boqvist makes a lot of sense to claim from the waiver wire.
Sean Durzi, D, Los Angeles Kings (34% Rostered)
A part of the Jake Muzzin trade nearly three years ago, Durzi is getting his first chance at NHL ice time. He’s played in six matchups since being called up to the Kings and has made an immediate impact. He has a goal and four assists, with four of his points generated on the power play. He has 11 shots on goal, 10 hits, and six blocks to help out with peripheral categories. Drew Doughty returned from injury much sooner than anticipated and will return to his spot on the top power-play unit. However, Durzi is still on the second unit, so he can continue to pick up those power-play tallies.
Goaltending
Alexandar Georgiev, G, New York Rangers (43% Rostered)
Igor Shesterkin is on injured reserve without a definite timetable for a return. That makes Georgiev the de-facto starter until Shesterkin reclaims the net. Georgiev hasn’t had the crease much but does have a 4-1-1 record. His 3.36 GAA and .882 save percentage are not pretty, but he’s been much better lately. He made nine saves on nine shots when coming in relief for Shesterkin. Then saved 25 of 27 shots and 24 of 26 shots in back-to-back wins over Chicago. The Rangers are hot, being winners of seven straight games. It’s always worth having the starter on a team playing great hockey.
