Here is the Fantrax Injury Report for Thursday, July 27, 2023.
In today’s edition, Juan Soto is said to have an injury that’s plagued him all season long. What’s the latest on his status going forward? Also, the news of Aaron Judge returning tomorrow may have been premature, as manager Aaron Boone could not confirm that to be true. Finally, Max Fried missed his rehab outing due to an illness, but should be ready to go soon enough. All that and more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report
Max Fried – SP Atlanta Braves
Max Fried was scratched from his rehab start tonight for Triple-A Gwinnett due to illness. #Braves said they will announce a new date for the start tomorrow or Friday. He was expected to make this fourth rehab start and then likely be activated.
— David O'Brien (@DOBrienATL) July 26, 2023
The hope is that Fried’s final rehab start will take place soon enough and that he can be activated next week. There’s been no indication of this being a serious illness.
Cedric Mullins – OF Baltimore Orioles
Judging by this, the final piece needed for Mullins to return would be his ability to stretch out while running to improve. Every other facet of his game seems to be on track for a return. Yesterday was his first time running, so, as he said, how he feels today will be key.
Gunnar Henderson – 3B Baltimore Orioles
Henderson stated that this injury is quite similar to what happened to him earlier in the year. He compared the pain, the process for recovery, and the timeline of both and said that they are quite similar. While this Friday return is anything but official, it does give a sense that he could be close to a return any day now.
Tanner Houck – SP Boston Red Sox, Garrett Whitlock – SP Boston Red Sox
Sox will meet today to discuss what roles Whitlock and Houck will fill moving forward, and that will dictate their rehabs. Cora says his preference is to get them back “as soon as possible,” but that it’s a conversation and team needs starters.
— Alex Speier (@alexspeier) July 26, 2023
Both players have traditionally done better as relief pitchers, but it remains to be seen if the team will choose those paths. The Red Sox need starters, but that might come through the trade deadline.
Chris Sale – SP Boston Red Sox
If Sale’s live BP in Worcester tomorrow goes well, he would start a rehab assignment on Tuesday.
— Alex Speier (@alexspeier) July 26, 2023
That’s potentially great news, but dependent on how today’s BP session goes. Stay tuned.
Mike Clevinger – SP Chicago White Sox
Mike Clevinger, coming off 4+ innings in sim game Monday, is on target to return to rotation Saturday v Cleveland.
Hasn’t pitched since June 14. (Biceps)
— Daryl Van Schouwen (@CST_soxvan) July 26, 2023
Be prepared.
Nick Lodolo – SP Cincinnati Reds
The quote here didn’t even specify whether it would be at the beginning of September for a Lodolo return. This could very well end up being season-ending if there are any setbacks.
Hunter Greene – SP Cincinnati Reds
Greene continues to work on getting back and is close to heading out to a rehab assignment. Once he finishes the next level in this program, he should be able to ramp things up and get closer to a return.
Jesus Sanchez – OF Miami Marlins
Neck tightness for Jesus Sanchez, per the #Marlins
— Jordan McPherson (@J_McPherson1126) July 26, 2023
The original thought was that this was a leg injury, but alas it was neck stiffness. This could mean a quicker return back to the lineup. Stay tuned.
Jesse Winker – OF Milwaukee Brewers
OF Jesse Winker placed on the 10-day injured list with back spasms, retroactive to July 25.

— Milwaukee Brewers (@Brewers) July 26, 2023
Winker once again heads to the Injured List, this time for spasms in his back. His disastrous 2023 season continues.
Joey Gallo – OF Minnesota Twins
Joey Gallo was removed from today's game with illness.
— Betsy Helfand (@betsyhelfand) July 26, 2023
First Gallo had pink eye, and now he is ill. This is quite the week to forget for Gallo.
Jorge Polanco – 2B Minnesota Twins
Jorge Polanco will play in St. Paul today and then fly to Kansas City with the #MNTwins to be activated on the road trip.
Caleb Thielbar will throw one more outing for St. Paul this weekend and then track to rejoin the Twins in St. Louis.
Reinforcements almost here.
— Do-Hyoung Park (@dohyoungpark) July 26, 2023
Be prepared, but also remember that he will be playing 3B for the Twins when he returns.
Alex Kirilloff – 1B Minnesota Twins
Alex Kirilloff out of today’s lineup with a sore shoulder. Tweaked it on a diving play, Rocco said.
He’ll get today and tomorrow off, then probably the last game in KC off against the lefty going into another off-day, so the hope is getting 4 of 6 days off will help.
— Do-Hyoung Park (@dohyoungpark) July 26, 2023
Krilloff will get a few days off to hopefully get himself right. He has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball, so both he and the Twins would want to get him back in the lineup as soon as possible.
Starling Marte – OF New York Mets
The Mets no longer expect to activate Starling Marte (migraines) when he's eligible tomorrow, per Buck Showalter. One complicating factor: Marte is expecting a child in the coming days, which will affect his availability.
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) July 26, 2023
It looks like Marte is feeling better and he’ll be ready just in time to welcome a new child into the world.
Aaron Judge – OF New York Yankees
Aaron Boone said he's not sure if Aaron Judge will go through a workout or if a rehab assignment is on the table. Boone added that he called Judge before and after the #Yankees' game quickly, but they didn't get to talk about today's sim game. Planned to touch base again tonight. https://t.co/byhwT7Cd6v
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) July 27, 2023
The original plan had Judge returning this Friday and playing against the Orioles. After yesterday’s game, manager Aaron Boone said that he’s not sure yet if Judge will in fact be activated. There will be more updates later today, but be aware that nothing is set in stone.
Esteury Ruiz – OF Oakland Athletics
Great news here as Ruiz will head out and go on a rehab assignment. He could possibly be back midweek next week and should be ready to be activated on all rosters. It’s being reported that Ruiz will work on batting practice and throwing today with Triple-A Las Vegas and then officially starting that rehab assignment tomorrow. Today is a big day to see if he can actually throw a baseball, which is what was holding him back previously.
Michael Wacha – SP San Diego Padres
Wacha continues to take things slowly, so as to conserve and preserve his strength for later in the season. He hasn’t pitched since the beginning of July and likely won’t until the middle of August, following a rehab assignment.
Juan Soto – OF San Diego Padres
Juan Soto will have an MRI on his right middle finger tomorrow. It’s been bothering him for a while and the Padres had hoped to avoid using him at all today.
— AJ Cassavell (@AJCassavell) July 26, 2023
There were reports that this finger has been bothering Soto since Spring Training, which is news to everyone. It might help explain his struggles out of the gate to start the season. Here’s hoping that this injury is not serious enough to warrant time off on the Injured List.
Mitch Haniger – OF San Francisco Giants
Mitch Haniger’s x-rays showed his fractured forearm has healed so he can now begin baseball activity.
— Susan Slusser (@susanslusser) July 27, 2023
Great news here, as Haniger looks to get back onto the field. Susan Slusser later speculates a late-August return but admits that she does not know for certain. Take that for what it’s worth, given that she is with the team every day and we are not.
Zach Eflin – SP Tampa Bay Rays
#Rays Cash said Eflin will get imaging on his left knee to get a better sense on the cause of the discomfort
— Marc Topkin (@TBTimes_Rays) July 26, 2023
There should be more known about the severity of Eflin’s knee after the MRI, but he was uncharacteristically porous yesterday. For reference, it was his right knee that gave him problems over the last two seasons, not his left knee.
Yandy Diaz – INF Tampa Bay Rays
Kevin Cash said Yandy Diaz’s MRI was encouraging. And that he’s doing well.
— Tricia Whitaker (@TriciaWhitaker) July 26, 2023
It sounds like Diaz might be able to avoid the Injured List or at least a significant injury. We should know more about his status later today or tomorrow.
Jonah Heim – C Texas Rangers
C Jonah Heim left tonight's game with left wrist soreness. He will continue to be evaluated.
— Texas Rangers PR (@TXRangersPR) July 27, 2023
There should be an update on Heim at some point today, and it’s possible that he doesn’t play in tomorrow’s game for some additional rest.
Nathan Eovaldi – SP Texas Rangers
Broke down how razor-thin the margin is for the Rangers to win the AL West last night.
Some other pregame notes: Eovaldi isn't listed as the probable for Sunday yet but that's the plan for now, Bruce Bochy said. https://t.co/4LGycv8hjZ
— Nathan Han (@NathanHan13) July 26, 2023
Be prepared…..though plans may change, as the team has wanted to give Eovaldi some rest to conserve and preserve his strength for down the stretch.
Hyun-Jin Ryu – SP Toronto Blue Jays
Blue Jays starters vs Angels this weekend
Friday — Kevin Gausman
Saturday — Alek Manoah
Sunday — Jose BerriosHyun Jin Ryu is throwing a side session today at Dodger Stadium
— Arden Zwelling (@ArdenZwelling) July 26, 2023
Ryu will not start for the Blue Jays this weekend, but anything after that is fair game. Stay tuned.
Victor Robles – OF Washington Nationals
Nats make it official: Selected Andrés Machado and optioned Amos Willingham to Triple-A Rochester.
To make room for Machado on the 40-man roster, Victor Robles was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
— Bobby Blanco (@Bobby_Blanco) July 26, 2023
The earliest that Robles can come back to the team is August 20. There has been no indication that he would be ready that early as his injury status and rehabilitation have been one of the quietest recoveries in baseball.
