MLB Injury Report
Merrill Kelly – SP Arizona Diamondbacks
Merrill Kelly will throw a 75 pitch sim game tomorrow in AZ. All goes well, he could return in 5 or 10 days.
— Jody Jackson (@Jody_Jackson) July 14, 2023
Very promising news here, though a lot of it hinges on a successful simulated game here later today.
Kyle Wright – SP Atlanta Braves
#Braves Kyle Wright continues to throw on flat ground, but is set to begin work off the mound soon. He is feeling good and excited to finally be progressing to bullpen sessions after two months on the shelf.
— Grant McAuley (@grantmcauley) July 14, 2023
While it’s positive news that Wright is feeling good, all of it will depend on how he feels once he starts throwing. He has been throwing off of flat ground for the better part of a month, but this is a big step forward. If all goes well, he could be back within a month, as he’ll need a lengthy rehab assignment.
Chris Sale – SP Boston Red Sox
Chris Sale will throw his first bullpen session on Tuesday, marking his first time off a mound since the night he got injured on June 1.
— Ian Browne (@IanMBrowne) July 14, 2023
Sale’s first bullpen in more than a month is definitely good news, as he is working his way back from a major injury. If all goes well, he could be back in the middle of August.
Garrett Whitlock – SP Boston Red Sox
Garrett Whitlock has not started throwing yet, so he will not be back next week. Bullpen games Monday and Tuesday
— Pete Abraham (@PeteAbe) July 14, 2023
After he starts throwing those bullpen sessions early next week, we should know more about when Whitlock will return. Until then, consider his absence indefinite.
Yoan Moncada – 3B Chicago White Sox
Moncada starting his injury rehab tonight with @KnightsBaseball
— Scott Merkin (@scottmerkin) July 14, 2023
Moncada finished the game 1-for-2 with a single in his first game rehabbing. He will likely need up to a week of these games in order to get himself game-ready to rejoin the White Sox.
Shane Bieber – SP Cleveland Guardians
Shane Bieber will not start for the Guardians on Monday. Tito said his forearm has been irritable the last few weeks and he’s struggled to bounce back his last three or four starts. That’s why his pitch count has been low.
He’s getting an MRI today. Meeting with docs tomorrow.
— Mandy Bell (@MandyBell02) July 14, 2023
This is bad news with the potential to be disastrous. The fact that this has been bothering Bieber for weeks and he’s still been out there throwing is negligence on both sides of the ball. We should know more later today, but there’s a chance that he misses significant time here.
Antonio Senzatela – SP Colorado Rockies
Bad news for RHP Antonio Senzatela.
After a setback in SF last weekend, he will require Tommy John surgery, according to Rockies manager Bud Black.
— Patrick Lyons (@PatrickDLyons) July 14, 2023
This essentially ends Senzatela’s 2023 season and possibly all of his 2024 season.
Yordan Alvarez – OF Houston Astros
The start of Yordan Alvarez’s rehab assignment has been delayed due to illness.
Alvarez had been scheduled to begin a rehab assignment with Triple A Sugar Land tonight.
— Houston Astros (@astros) July 14, 2023
The hope is that the illness only causes a short delay and that Alvrez can get back on the field. The rehab assignment isn’t expected to be a long one.
Shohei Ohtani – SP Los Angeles Angels
Shohei Ohtani is getting looked at by the trainer again. He's coming out of the game.
Presumably this is the fingernail again. Nevin said before the game it wouldn't be an issue anymore. But it seems to be bothering him.
— Sam Blum (@SamBlum3) July 15, 2023
There was hope that Ohtani had put his fingernail and blister issues behind him, but apparently, they’re not gone yet. It would seem that within some time, both should go away and he should be able to get back to his usual self soon enough. Essentially, this doesn’t seem like a long-term issue at the moment.
Los Angeles Angels – Team Update
#Angels Transactions:
•Reinstated LHP Matt Moore and INF Zach Neto from the injured list
•Recalled INF Michael Stefanic from Triple-A Salt Lake
•Selected the contract of INF Trey Cabbage (#25)
•Outrighted INF David Fletcher to Triple-A Salt Lake
•Placed INF Anthony Rendon…— Angels PR (@LAAngelsPR) July 14, 2023
Adell will miss some time with an oblique injury. The estimated time away will be at least one week, but it all depends on the severity of this tricky injury which is hard to judge. As for Rendon, it’s been one setback after another, making him one of the worst signings in the history of baseball.
Clayton Kershaw – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
Clayton Kershaw confirmed he won’t be back until early August
He said he feels fine, but that after getting an MRI before the break, doctors told him his injury (he didn’t disclose specifics) needs more time to heal
— Jack Harris (@ByJackHarris) July 14, 2023
It was previously announced that Kershaw would throw a bullpen session next week in Baltimore, but it would appear that those plans will be put on hold. He himself said that he feels fine, but doctors are telling him not to pitch. As a result, he will trust the medical professionals. We should know more about his situation in the coming weeks.
Jose Miranda – 3B Minnesota Twins
#MNTwins scratched José Miranda with right shoulder soreness. Alex Kirilloff will take his spot in the lineup.
— Do-Hyoung Park (@dohyoungpark) July 15, 2023
Miranda missed the WBC because of shoulder soreness, and the hope is that this won’t keep him out for long. This shoulder ailment could be the reason for his long-season slump. He just may not have ever been fully healthy in 2023.
Aaron Judge – OF New York Yankees
Aaron Judge also said he didn't feel limited "at all" taking BP.
He ran a little bit too, but not at full speed. #Yankees https://t.co/qw2iKOgNXA
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) July 14, 2023
This is a major development for Judge. It had been speculated by Boone that this would be a big step forward for him. By being able to utilize the foot in such a way that he can pivot, rotate and transfer weight, it would show that he’s able to use his foot in ways closer to the ways he used to. While this isn’t necessarily the end of his pain and discomfort, it is showing progression. If Judge feels good after yesterday’s session, we could see an accelerated push toward him doing what he needs to do to get back on the field and play. Stay tuned.
Oakland Athletics – Team Update
Injury updates, per #Athletics manager Mark Kotsay:
– Esteury Ruiz: swing progression, hitting off a tee; "further along than I thought he would be"
– Mason Miller and James Kaprielian: throwing progression; both throwing off flat ground tomorrow /1— Sonja Chen 陈星雅 (@SonjaMChen) July 14, 2023
– Ramón Laureano: taking live BP tomorrow; could start mapping out rehab assignment if all goes well
– Dany Jiménez: throwing live BP tomorrow
– Carlos Pérez: getting thumb reevaluated next week; could begin strengthening activities after that if he's cleared /2— Sonja Chen 陈星雅 (@SonjaMChen) July 14, 2023
– Zach Jackson: throwing bullpen tomorrow
– Kevin Smith: starting swing progression tomorrow
– Richard Lovelady: not throwing
– Manny Piña: not doing baseball activities /3— Sonja Chen 陈星雅 (@SonjaMChen) July 14, 2023
So much to unpack, but here are the major points. Esteruy Ruiz is still without a timetable, but his latest progression is encouraging. The team would be wise to not rush him back, as he will be a key piece for them moving forward. Both Mason Miller and James Kaprielian progressing to flat ground throwing is good news, though we shouldn’t anticipate a quick return from Miller. Keep an eye on Ramon Laureano at the trade deadline, especially if he gets clearance to begin a rehab assignment.
Cristian Pache – OF Philadelphia Phillies
Cristian Pache’s right elbow irritation is from a screw placed in his elbow before he even signed as a pro. Rob Thomson couldn’t say much more than that because Pache hadn’t seen the doctor yet.
— Todd Zolecki (@ToddZolecki) July 14, 2023
Pache should have a clearer timetable for a potential return once he sees his doctor.
Andrew McCutchen – OF Pittsburgh Pirates
Andrew McCutchen said he expects to be activated from the IL on Sunday, the first day he’s eligible.
— Jason Mackey (@JMackeyPG) July 14, 2023
Be prepared.
Michael Conforto – OF San Francisco Giants
No x rays for Conforto, seems like he’s probably ok. Slater has a little heel bruise from play along the line, also not a major concern at this point.
— Susan Slusser (@susanslusser) July 15, 2023
Conforto had just returned from hamstring irritation, and now he gets hit by a pitch. The hope here is that it’s not too serious a situation.
Bryce Miller – SP Seattle Mariners
Bryce Miller is scheduled to start Sunday
— Ryan Divish (@RyanDivish) July 14, 2023
Be prepared.
Tyler O’Neill – OF St. Louis Cardinals
Tyler O’Neill is back out with Memphis on a rehab. He’s set to play seven innings in the field tonight, DH tomorrow, and play again Sunday. He could be approaching a return as soon as next week.
— Jeff Jones (@jmjones) July 14, 2023
Since he’s begun his rehab assignment, O’Neill has hit .278 with one extra-base hit and five strikeouts.
Tommy Edman – INF/OF St. Louis Cardinals
Tommy Edman had an injection in his right wrist over the break and is still several days away from being able to swing a bat. His IL stay will not be a minimum length.
— Jeff Jones (@jmjones) July 14, 2023
We could be seeing a long absence for Edman, who won’t be swinging a bat for the next little while. There’s no timetable for his return, but the team is deep enough to cover his spot for now.
Shane McClanahan – SP Tampa Bay Rays
For #Rays, Tyler Glasnow will start Game 1 tomorrow, with Cooper Criswell as the 27th man in an undetermined role for Game 2.
That’ll likely push back Zach Eflin to Sunday, Shane McClanahan to Monday & Taj Bradley to Tuesday, but we’ll get more clarity from Cash after tomorrow.
— Ryan Bass (@Ry_Bass) July 14, 2023
The original fear was that McClanahan’s start got delayed for a medical reason. Instead, this has more to do with the Rays strategizing how to handle the double header. The downside is that this is a much tougher matchup for him.
Jordan Romano – RP Toronto Blue Jays
Jordan Romano (back) will throw off a mound before today's game to test it out.
If he needs another day, that's fine with a fresh bullpen, but the #BlueJays don't sound too worried.
— Keegan Matheson (@KeeganMatheson) July 14, 2023
This doesn’t sound like a serious situation for the Blue Jays and Romano, and the hope is that he can return to the team this weekend or shortly afterward.
Jeimer Candelario – 3B Washington Nationals
Jeimer Candelario has a bone bruise in his right thumb, per Davey Martinez. Hurt it during a pregame defensive drill, but it felt worse when he tried to swing in his lone at-bat tonight.
— Mark Zuckerman (@MarkZuckerman) July 15, 2023
Candelario should be considered DTD for now, but he could go to the Injured List if things don’t improve.
Patrick Corbin – SP Washington Nationals
The Nats have placed Patrick Corbin on the paternity list and recalled Paolo Espino from Triple-A Rochester.
Corbin was not scheduled to pitch this weekend in St. Louis.
— Bobby Blanco (@Bobby_Blanco) July 14, 2023
The best is wished for the Corbin family.
