MLB Injury Report
Kyle Wright – SP Atlanta Braves
Kyle Wright will start Tuesday for the #Braves as expected, his season debut after opening on the IL.
— David O'Brien (@DOBrienATL) April 11, 2023
As expected, Wright will debut later today. Be prepared.
Max Fried – SP Atlanta Braves
#Braves’ Max Fried (hamstring) has been throwing off the mound without incident, but hasn’t put full stress on the leg yet doing fielding drills and covering first base, etc., Snitker said.
Wright is expected to start Tuesday, though it’s still listed as TBA.
— David O'Brien (@DOBrienATL) April 10, 2023
Encouraging news that Fried has taken a step forward. That said, it’s discouraging because it’s taken so long to get to this point.
Raisel Iglesias – RP Atlanta Braves
#Braves closer Raisel Iglesias (shoulder) has thrown three times, including consecutive days, but hasn’t thrown off mound yet. Said everything feels normal, doesn’t know timetable for return. Been on IL since end of spring training.
— David O'Brien (@DOBrienATL) April 10, 2023
The flat-ground throwing is a good sign that Iglesias is at least throwing now, but he needs to get back onto a mound before a return date is even considered.
Kyle Bradish – SP Baltimore Orioles
Kyle Bradish could get a few innings with an affiliate later this week, per Brandon Hyde #orioles
— Roch Kubatko (@masnRoch) April 10, 2023
It sounds like Bradish’s foot is fine, and considering it’s not an arm injury, it should be a short assignment. He is eligible to return on April 20.
Adam Duvall – OF Boston Red Sox
Adam Duvall will not have surgery, per Alex Cora's postgame interview.
— Ian Browne (@IanMBrowne) April 11, 2023
This development might shorten Duvall’s time away from the team, though no timetable had ever been given. If owners can stash him on the Injured List, he’s worth saving after his hot start. Time will tell if the wrist injury happens his power.
Adalberto Mondesi – SS Boston Red Sox
Adalberto Mondesí is with the Sox to work with the coaches. He’s on the 60-day IL.
— Pete Abraham (@PeteAbe) April 10, 2023
It was also reported that Mondesi was taking batting practice and grounders, which is great news. There had been a lull in the news regarding any development, so this is a big plus.
Seiya Suzuki – OF Chicago Cubs
Notes from Ross pregame…
• “Best-case scenario” likely has Suzuki rejoining Cubs at some point on West coast trip.
• Hughes slated to make next appearance Tue for Iowa.
• Assad will get stretched out as starter with Iowa. Rotation depth, but remains MLB bullpen option, too.— Jordan Bastian (@MLBastian) April 10, 2023
While best-case doesn’t necessarily mean it’s happening, this indicates how close Suzuki really is. Be prepared.
Yoan Moncada – 3B Chicago White Sox
Back soreness for Moncada. Day to day
— Scott Merkin (@scottmerkin) April 10, 2023
While it doesn’t seem too serious, it’s something to monitor.
Tim Anderson – SS Chicago White Sox
Anderson got himself caught up with a base runner and sat in agony on the field. This is an encouraging statement from Grifol, as Anderson thought that he could play through it. More details will emerge today.
Joey Votto – 1B Cincinnati Reds
David Bell said it’s unlikely for Joey Votto to return on Thursday. Jose Barrero is available today. Jason Vosler is going to start getting a bit of pregame work in the outfield.
— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) April 4, 2023
Votto has been struggling to do much of anything while in the minors. The team is likely to take things slowly with him.
Aaron Civale – SP Cleveland Guardians, Triston McKenzie – SP Cleveland Guardians
Aaron Civale to the injured list with an oblique strain.
Triston McKenzie shifted to the 60-day IL (he can return as soon as May 29) https://t.co/mSdGg9KY3Y
— Zack Meisel (@ZackMeisel) April 10, 2023
It’s unclear as to exactly when Civale injured himself, but he did pitch as early as last Friday. As for McKenzie, he was cleared to throw heavy medicine balls over the weekend. With the move, he won’t be able to make his debut until at least May 29, but that’s assuming that all goes according to plan.
German Marquez – SP Colorado Rockies
Doctors have examined #Rockies RHP German Marquez's right forearm. It's not known if there will be an MRI. Marquez said he doesn't know if he'll have to miss a start. https://t.co/ytSPAnA3er
— Thomas Harding (@harding_at_mlb) April 11, 2023
Great news as there hadn’t been much said about him during the game. There are many unknowns here, but the biggest takeaway is that the injury isn’t considered serious. How Marquez’s body responds overnight will indicate what’s next going forward.
Anthony Rendon – 3B Los Angeles Angels
Anthony Rendon was just scratched with left shoulder soreness. He was hit by a pitch in yesterday's game.
— Rhett Bollinger (@RhettBollinger) April 11, 2023
For now, all that we have is the knowledge that Rendon was hit by a pitch last week. Still, given his injury history, we can’t take anything lightly. The team has indicated that they will check up on him later today.
Tony Gonsolin – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
Dave Roberts said it’s looking like Tony Gonsolin won’t be back until at least May now
His recovery from a sprained ankle continues to go slow. It’s looking like another 2-3 weeks before he even goes out on rehab
— Jack Harris (@Jack_A_Harris) April 10, 2023
Major development here, as Gonsolin is at least two weeks away from beginning a rehab assignment, which will likely be at least two weeks long. Owners should hold onto him if they can, but it’s getting hard to trust him.
Miami Marlins – Team Update
Bender playing catch
Enright progressing
Nance to throw 30-pitch bullpen tomorrow
Meyer throwing at 75 feet
Sixto throwing live BP tomorrow
Wendle no baseball activity yet
Okert next/second outing Wednesday with Triple-A
— Christina De Nicola (@CDeNicola13) April 10, 2023
Of note, Meyer has evolved into throwing from 75 feet but still has a ways to go before any pitching. Sanchez throwing a live bullpen today is something to monitor, though he’s been out of baseball for so long. It’s looking like Wendle will be out for much longer than his ten-day minimum.
Joey Gallo – 1B/OF Minnesota Twins
Joey Gallo will hit in the cage Tuesday after a successful pregame workout. #MNTwins
— DanHayesMLB (@DanHayesMLB) April 10, 2023
It’s looking like Gallo has avoided a significant injury here. He could be back later this week.
Carlos Correa – SS Minnesota Twins
Correa says he dealt with a middle back spasm, unrelated to the lower back issues of the past. Felt it after the weird play at the plate on Saturday.
Felt it more yesterday, is feeling better today. Hopes to be back in the "next couple days," perhaps as soon as tomorrow.
— Do-Hyoung Park (@dohyoungpark) April 10, 2023
The fact that Correa was feeling better is a good sign. Stay tuned, but he’s likely DTD.
Starling Marte – OF New York Mets
Buck Showalter says the Mets think they’re out of the woods on Starling Marte having a concussion
However, his neck is still sore. They hope he’ll be available tonight but still tbd
— Pat Ragazzo (@ragazzoreport) April 10, 2023
Great news on the concussion, though Marte did not play last night. Consider him DTD until otherwise told.
Luis Severino – SP New York Yankees
Luis Severino says he feels good after a 22-pitch bullpen. He said he threw all his pitches, including a splitter he's working on. #Yankees
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) April 10, 2023
Fantastic in that Severino feels great while pitching and can throw all of his pitches. How his body responds will be the key to when and how the team proceeds. That said, expect at least another bullpen soon.
Seth Brown – 1B/OF Oakland Athletics
We have placed outfielder Seth Brown on the 10-day injured list with a strained left oblique and recalled infielder Kevin Smith from Triple-A Las Vegas. pic.twitter.com/TvwH8XtxZo
— Oakland A's (@Athletics) April 10, 2023
No word yet on the severity, but it’s likely that Brown misses more than the minimum of ten days since obliques are tricky. Stay tuned.
Oneil Cruz – SS Pittsburgh Pirates
Oneil Cruz had surgery last evening at Allegheny General Hospital by Dr. Greg Altman and Dr. Darren Frank. The surgery stabilized the fractured fibula and addressed the injury to the syndesmosis.
We anticipate a return to action in 4 months.
— Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) April 10, 2023
A statement from the team places his return to action at four months. This puts Cruz returning in the middle of August. That’s assuming all goes well without any setbacks. Horrible news here all around, but good in that he’s expected back. Redraft owners need to consider all options here.
Joe Musgrove – SP San Diego Padres
Joe Musgrove, who landed on his right shoulder during a fielding play in his rehab start the other day, got a cortisone shot yesterday. Bob Melvin said Musgrove is feeling better and could play catch tomorrow, but the Padres plan to proceed based on how he feels after throwing.
— Dennis Lin (@dennistlin) April 10, 2023
Unfortunate development here, and somewhat fluky. Musgrove was set to debut rather soon, but this delays the inevitable for a bit. No specific timetable has been laid out just yet since it depends on how he feels after throwing.
Andres Munoz – RP Seattle Mariners
Andrés Munoz said he hopes to start playing catch again in a few days, maybe even tomorrow. He said the IL stint was a precaution, not wanting make the situation worse.
— Ryan Divish (@RyanDivish) April 10, 2023
Good to hear that it was a precautionary move. That said, reading between the lines, maybe Munoz shouldn’t be their secondary option once he’s back. If he can’t recover and be ready every second day, the team may need to find other options. That said, the team hasn’t indicated a change is in the works, so keep using him as you were.
Taylor Walls – SS Tampa Bay Rays
#Rays Cash said imaging on Walls’ sore left elbow was “all pretty good,” that there’s some tendinitis but they hope that with treatment he’ll be back on the field in next few days.
Of note, Aranda, who was here on taxi squad, is headed back to re-join AAA @DurhamBulls— Marc Topkin (@TBTimes_Rays) April 10, 2023
The only positive to take away from this is that it’s not his throwing elbow. Stay tuned for more updates on a return for Walls.
Mitch Garver – C Texas Rangers
The Texas Rangers today announced the following roster moves:
– C Mitch Garver placed on 10-day Injured List (Mild left knee sprain)
– C Sandy León selected from Round Rock (AAA)— Texas Rangers PR (@TXRangersPR) April 10, 2023
The knee sprain is mild, so perhaps this won’t be a long absence. Owners need to be aware of Garver’s injury history and understand that this is part of who he is.
