MLB Injury Report for April 4
Raisel Iglesias – RP Atlanta Braves
Within the Braves notes: Raisel Iglesias has not resumed throwinghttps://t.co/MOovAiaVrN
— Justin Toscano (@JustinCToscano) April 4, 2023
The original plan was for Iglesias to throw one week after his diagnosis. That timeline is out the window as we are now two weeks removed from that date. While it’s good to know that he is getting treatment, this could be a long term situation.
Michael Soroka – SP Atlanta Braves
Mike Soroka will make his first start with Gwinnett on Tuesday. He says he’ll work as a starter and reliever in Triple-A as he continues his path back to the majors.
— Gabe Burns (@GabeBurnsAJC) March 31, 2023
The major objective here is for Soroka to get healthy, stay healthy, and pitch in 2023. He may project as a starter or a reliever this season.
Kyle Bradish – SP Baltimore Orioles
From #orioles: RHP Kyle Bradish left tonight’s game with a right foot contusion. Preliminary x-rays were negative for a fracture. He will undergo further evaluation and testing.
— Roch Kubatko (@masnRoch) April 4, 2023
Bradish was doing well before taking a hit off of his foot. It’s good news that the preliminary X-rays were negative. Stay tuned as more updates will be released.
Patrick Wisdom – 3B Chicago Cubs
Patrick Wisdom says his postgame X-rays came back clean on his left wrist. The wrist felt tender when swinging, he said, and is sore from the HBP but he'll be OK.
— Meghan Montemurro (@M_Montemurro) April 4, 2023
Wisdom says that he is okay and was able to play the game and actually get himself a hit. He’s likely DTD unless otherwise noted.
Jose Barrero – SS Cincinnati Reds
Bell said Barrero should be available tomorrow. Likely would’ve stayed in if he were at ss
— C. Trent Rosecrans (@ctrent) April 4, 2023
Barrero hurt himself while running out a single. He was in the outfield defensively, so the decision was made to bench him.
Michael Lorenzen – SP Detroit Tigers
Michael Lorenzen said he is scheduled to make a rehab start for Toledo on Saturday
— Chris McCosky (@cmccosky) April 3, 2023
Lorenzen is trying to carve out a role for himself in the Tigers’ rotation. He will likely need more than one rehab start to get himself acclimated to that role.
Miguel Vargas – 1B Los Angeles Dodgers
#Dodgers MGR Dave Roberts on Miguel Vargas, who was HBP in right thumb: "His thumb is fine. We'll get it looked at tomorrow. He said it was sore, but full range of motion or strength. So hopefully tomorrow he comes in feeling good. He was adamant about staying the game tonight."
— Mike DiGiovanna (@MikeDiGiovanna) April 4, 2023
The good news is that he has a full range of motion in his thumb and that he wanted to remain in the game. Still, there could be swelling the next morning, and a day or two off could be what’s needed.
Johnny Cueto – SP Miami Marlins
The Marlins were bludgeoned by the Twins 11-1. Johnny Cueto who had a biceps issue a couple of weeks ago still clearly has the same issue. IL would seem likely. Can’t begin to try and explain that one, so I won’t try. Tough start at 1-4.
— Craig Mish (@CraigMish) April 4, 2023
It would seem that the issue flared up during this start, as Cueto had a disastrous game. He went through a biceps situation weeks ago and it looks like it’s back. The team has Braxton Garrett should they need him to fill this role in their rotation.
Joey Wendle – INF/OF Miami Marlins
#Marlins lineup change: Joey Wendle is out (oblique soreness), Jon Berti is now starting at shortstop and batting ninth. https://t.co/2ARIIwfFhD
— Jordan McPherson (@J_McPherson1126) April 3, 2023
Oblique injuries can be tricky, so a trip to the Injured List isn’t out of the question. Look for Jon Berti to be the beneficiary of this change. He had league-winning speed potential last season.
Max Kepler – OF Minnesota Twins
Rocco Baldelli said Max Kepler felt it when he hit the bag. They don’t expect it to be a long-term issue. He likely won’t start tomorrow, Baldelli said, but they’re going to test it out and see how he’s moving around. https://t.co/y0PdsSAWS2
— Betsy Helfand (@betsyhelfand) April 4, 2023
Kepler hurt himself while running out a base hit. Today’s test will determine the length of his absence.
Harrison Bader – OF New York Yankees
Harrison Bader took 25 dry swings today, Aaron Boone says.
“He was letting it rip and felt great.”
Bader continues to progress from his oblique strain and will eventually get into rehab games.
— Max Goodman (@MaxTGoodman) April 3, 2023
Successful dry wings are one thing, but the next step will be to do that with a baseball. Bader is aiming to begin a rehab assignment soon, as he’s progressing towards full health.
Frankie Montas – SP New York Yankees
Prior to tonight’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves:
• Signed RHP Ian Hamilton (#71) to a Major League contract and selected him to the active roster.
• Transferred RHP Frankie Montas to the 60-day injured list.— Yankees PR Dept. (@YankeesPR) April 3, 2023
This was merely done to free up a roster spot. Montas’ status and/or health hasn’t changed from where it was last. This is a long-term injury that could keep him out for most, if not all, of the season.
Paul Blackburn – SP Oakland Athletics
Paul Blackburn threw 20 pitches in a side session today. Next step for him will be to head to Single-A Stockton to begin a rehab assignment, per Kotsay.
— Martín Gallegos (@MartinJGallegos) April 3, 2023
The beat-writer in question clarified that Blackburn threw 40 total pitches, not 20. He is continuing to recover from a fingernail avulsion and is looking to debut soon. No word on how long he’ll need to rehab.
Ranger Suarez – SP Philadelphia Phillies
The good news is that the team is encouraged by what they’re seeing. Suarez will undoubtedly need a rehab assignment, but it’s looking like he’s getting closer than he once was when we feared the worst a mere week or so ago.
JT Brubaker – SP Pittsburgh Pirates
Awful news, considering he was having a great spring. For now, he’s likely out for a long time, with Johan Oviedo being the option to replace him.
Thairo Estrada – 2B/SS/OF San Francisco Giants
Thairo Estrada is coming out of the game after fouling a ball off his left leg.
— Alex Pavlovic (@PavlovicNBCS) April 3, 2023
No word on the severity just yet, so stay tuned for updates. There’s a possibility that it was precautionary, given their big lead at the time.
Lars Nootbar – OF St. Louis Cardinals
IL stint confirmed.
The #STLCards have placed Lars Nootbaar (left thumb contusion) on the 10-day IL, retroactive to 3/31.
Juan Yepez has been recalled, he's eligible to play tonight. #STLCards https://t.co/dQAMPpA5pL
— Katie Woo (@katiejwoo) April 3, 2023
Nootbar jammed his thumb a few days ago and hasn’t played since. While it’s concerning that he needs ten more days from which to recover, it doesn’t seem to be a very serious injury. Nonetheless, owners will need to find a replacement for the next week and a bit.
Adam Wainwright – SP St. Louis Cardinals, Paul DeJong – SS St. Louis Cardinals
Adam Wainwright threw a bullpen today, will get reviewed by medical officials today as he then takes stride toward rehab starts.
Paul DeJong is set to join Class A Palm Beach as its season open a later this week. Exact day TBD. But that will begin his rehab assignment. #stlcards
— Derrick Goold (@dgoold) April 3, 2023
There is no word yet on where his rehab assignment will be, but Wainwright is destined to have one. As for DeJong, he’s a candidate to return to the team before May if everything pans out.
Leody Taveras – OF Texas Rangers
The speed outfielder is pain-free when swinging, but still has a few steps to go before returning. It’s not out of the question that he is back within the next week.
