The Fantrax Injury Report is ready for today. Inside, you’ll find out about Chris Sale’s MRI results and what that could mean going forward. There’s also a big update on the Tigers’ Riley Greene and Eduardo Rodriguez while they rehab. The Pirates lineup received a big blow as of late with the departures of Bryan Reynolds and Ke’Bryan Hayes, but the news on both isn’t as bad as you may think. Also, what’s the latest level of concern for Corbin Carroll? Finally, long-injured stars Dustin May and Oneil Cruz both have some updates. All in today’s Fantrax Injury Report.
MLB Injury Report
Corbin Carroll – OF Arizona Diamondbacks
Torey says the level of concern for Corbin Carroll is “minimal.” He is not currently set to undergo imaging.
— Theo Mackie (@theo_mackie) June 29, 2023
It was also said that Carroll is DTD right now, but that an outfield move would be coming. This is the same shoulder that required surgery for a torn labrum and a posterior capsule back in 2021. While he was given the green light to move forward, it’s something to consider given his history with injuries in his shoulder.
Chris Sale – SP Boston Red Sox
Sale got encouraging results from his MRI, which allowed him to start a throwing program. He will need to essentially start from scratch since he was shut down completely for quite a while. He did say that his arm doesn’t hurt anymore and that the only thing left for him to do was start throwing again. While August 1 does seem like a long way away, he still has a lot of work left to do. He will need to be able to play catch from various distances, followed by different levels of bullpen sessions. After that, he’ll face live hitters and then go through what is likely to be an extensive rehab assignment.
Kris Bryant – OF Colorado Rockies
#Rockies won't need to evaluate OF Kris Bryant further following his rehab assignment in Triple-A. He'll be activated Friday ahead of series vs Detroit
— Kyle Newman (@KyleNewmanDP) June 29, 2023
Be prepared.
Eduardo Rodriguez – SP Detroit Tigers
Eduardo Rodriguez's rehab start for @MudHens went about how you would expect him to pitch with an automated strike zone: 4.1 scoreless innings, 3 hits, walk, 4 K's. 58 pitches, 41 strikes. He drew 4 swings and misses, but 12 called strikes, 10 off his fastball. pic.twitter.com/mjw69InZo8
— Jason Beck (@beckjason) June 30, 2023
This was a successful outing for Rodriguez, who is attempting to make a return from a finger injury. He will likely need a few more games before he’s back with the Tigers. The 58 pitches that he threw are an encouraging sign.
Reese Olson – SP Detroit Tigers
A.J. Hinch said X-Rays on Reese Olson's knee were negative.
Hinch: "We'll see over the next couple days what it's like."
Olson: "Optimistic. I think I'll be ready to go."
— Cody Stavenhagen (@CodyStavenhagen) June 29, 2023
Olson was hit by a comebacker, but the follow-up X-Rays came back negative. It’s likely just a bruise, but definitely, something to monitor going forward. Time will tell if he can make his next start.
Detroit Tigers – Team Update
A couple of notes:
— Not yet official, but Tarik Skubal should be returning to the majors after last night's rehab start
— Akil Baddoo and Riley Greene are going to Toledo but they won't begin playing just yet. Baddoo is closer than Greene to starting a rehab assignment
— Cody Stavenhagen (@CodyStavenhagen) June 29, 2023
Skubal has been dealing since he began his rehab assignment, and his return to Detroit doesn’t come as much of a surprise. His velocity has been up throughout his starts, but it remains questionable that he can maintain it as four innings is the longest he’s gone yet. As for Greene and Baddoo, both look to be on the right path back to the Tigers. As stated, Baddoo will likely get called back to Detroit before Greene, but it’s possible that both are back just after the All-Star Break.
Dustin May – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
Correction: #Dodgers Dave Roberts said he misspoke yesterday. Dustin May has not started playing catch. Still rehabbing from flexor pronator mass injury and PRP injection 6 weeks ago.
— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) June 29, 2023
Roberts clarified his statements from a day previous, where he said that May had already started throwing. He has not, and as such, he is still rehabbing and hasn’t progressed to playing catch.
Clayton Kershaw – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
#Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw said his shoulder got “cranky” in sixth inning Tuesday night. Diagnosed with inflammation. Took a cortisone shot. Down for a few days. Hopes to make next start but “I’m not gonna be stupid about it.”
— Mike DiGiovanna (@MikeDiGiovanna) June 29, 2023
The team will likely take things slowly with Kershaw, who himself has said they will probably be extra cautious. He has a history of missing time in the summer and coming back strong. Fantasy owners should be patient.
Yuli Gurriel – 1B Miami Marlins
#Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said Yuli Gurriel is day to day. Nothing broken.
— Jordan McPherson (@J_McPherson1126) June 30, 2023
Gurriel took a bad bounce on a ground ball during warmups and missed yesterday’s game. He is likely DTD until we hear anything different.
Anthony Rizzo – 1B New York Yankees
Anthony Rizzo came out of today’s game due to his hit by pitch on his back elbow.
X-rays were negative, per Aaron Boone. He’s day-to-day and there’s a good chance he won’t play tomorrow.
— Max Goodman (@MaxTGoodman) June 29, 2023
Consider Rizzo DTD for now, with the note of him missing today’s game. It looks like he’s all but averted a serious injury.
Aaron Judge – OF New York Yankees
Judge playing catch is something, though how big of a step forward has yet to be determined. Boone also stated that swinging a bat will be a big challenge for him, He said that being able to torque and that turning his body will be a challenge, but completing it will be a good indication then of where he is in the recovery process. He remains without a timetable for a return.
Pittsburgh Pirates – Team Update
Pirates updates from director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk:
Oneil Cruz playing catch out to 75 feet. Gaining confidence, strength & range of motion.
Bryan Reynolds hit on the field today. Will be back "in the coming days."
They expect Ke'Bryan Hayes to miss the minimum.
— Jason Mackey (@JMackeyPG) June 29, 2023
Lots to unpack here from a list of players loaded with talent and fantasy implications. Cruz had his walking boot removed recently, so now is about getting back into game shape. As stated, he is gaining confidence, strength, and range of motion throughout his body. Reynolds hopes to be back soon and is eligible to do so as of today. There has been no word on if that will happen, but don’t be surprised if he’s back this weekend. As for Hayes, the hope is that he will be fine and start to build on the momentum he had been building as of late. If this injury lingers, like it did last year, his production will suffer.
Yu Darvish – SP San Diego Padres, Michael Wacha – SP San Diego Padres
Seth Lugo expected to start Friday in Cincinnati.
Yu Darvish is at PNC Park today. Hasn’t thrown yet. Feeling better. Still a question for the weekend.
Michael Wacha is throwing a bullpen now.— Kevin Acee (@sdutKevinAcee) June 29, 2023
The situation with Darvish might be a wait-and-see one where his status isn’t announced until the team sees how he feels. Acee later clarified that Darvish did throw after the original tweet was sent. As for Wacha, his bullpen session was his first since missing his last turn in the rotation.
Alex Cobb – SP San Francisco Giants, Mike Yastrzemski – OF San Francisco Giants
Alex Cobb will come off the IL tomorrow and start against Mets. Mike Yastrzemski is doing well, could return Sunday or Monday (which is more likely, given that Giants will be in NY)
— Alex Pavlovic (@PavlovicNBCS) June 29, 2023
Be prepared.
Michael Conforto – OF San Francisco Giants
Michael Conforto says he caught a cleat while colliding with the wall on his catch last night. Hoping his hamstring will feel better in a day or two. Says he’s frustrated at the timing, with his return to Citi Field this weekend, but there’s no good time for an injury.
— Andrew Baggarly (@extrabaggs) June 29, 2023
The only hope here is that Conforto doesn’t push things too hard in order to return for a game in New York. Otherwise, consider him DTD.
