MLB Injury Report
Corbin Carroll – OF Arizona Diamondbacks
Corbin Carroll has right shoulder discomfort but doctors say everything checked out fine with strength and stability of his shoulder, Manager Torey Lovullo says, and #Dbacks are optimistic but will undergo an MRI on Friday just to make sure he’s fine, Lovullo said.
— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) July 7, 2023
This is the second time this week that Carroll will have missed time due to a sore right shoulder. Last weekend, the damage was considered to be minimal, but now things might be a bit different. While the team is optimistic about his chances, it seems likely that he misses the rest of the weekend series and gets all the rest that he can with the All-Star Break happening. They may not necessarily give him an Injury List designation, but they’d be wise to treat him as such.
Max Fried – SP Atlanta Braves
News: Max Fried is set to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday.
— Justin Toscano (@JustinCToscano) July 6, 2023
Fried has done well lately with his live batting practice sessions, and will now proceed toward a rehab assignment. It will likely be a lengthy one.
Aaron Hicks – OF Baltimore Orioles
Aaron Hicks was scratched with left Achilles soreness. He felt it yesterday too
— Danielle Allentuck (@d_allentuck) July 7, 2023
There is no word on if this will lead to a trip to the Injured List, but it sounds like a lingering injury. Stay tuned for more details.
Austin Hays – OF Baltimore Orioles
#Orioles All-Star OF Austin Hays said his hip is feeling a lot better. He's doing full baseball activities today, anticipates returning soon.
"I plan on playing before the All-Star Game," Hays said.
— Jake Rill (@JakeDRill) July 6, 2023
That’s great news and right from the source himself. With three games left before the All-Star Break, look for Hays to return.
Tanner Houck – SP Boston Red Sox
Cora says Tanner Houck has started workouts and will begin throwing on July 11.
— Jen McCaffrey (@jcmccaffrey) July 6, 2023
Houck will start throwing this Tuesday, though it’s unclear exactly how long of a program he will need. It’s been three weeks since he was hit in the face with a comebacker and suffered a fracture.
James Paxton – SP Boston Red Sox
James Paxton will start against the A’s on Saturday.
— Chris Henrique (@ChrisHenrique) July 6, 2023
Be prepared.
Ben Lively – SP Cincinnati Reds
Kennedy’s option is a very good sign for Ben Lively starting on Sunday.
— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) July 6, 2023
Be prepared.
Cal Quantrill – SP Cleveland Guardians
Cal Quantrill is back on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation. Cody Morris recalled to take his spot.
— Zack Meisel (@ZackMeisel) July 6, 2023
So much for Cody Morris being groomed as a long-reliever, unless it will be a bullpen-type of game next time through the rotation. As for Quantrill, he has struggled as of late, so this comes as no surprise.
Riley Greene – OF Detroit Tigers, Alex Faedo – SP Detroit Tigers, Akil Baddoo – OF Detroit Tigers
Riley Greene will play in the outfield today in his rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo and could return to the #Tigers this weekend, A.J. Hinch said.
Akil Baddoo is expected to be in the starting lineup Friday.
Alex Faedo will start Friday against the Blue Jays.
— Evan Petzold (@EvanPetzold) July 6, 2023
Greene being activated this soon comes as a surprise but in a good way. Look for it to happen either tomorrow or Sunday, but not today. As for Baddoo and Faedo, be prepared.
Jose Altuve – 2B Houston Astros
Jose Altuve said his MRI showed a “minor” issue with the oblique and termed it “good news.” He didn’t want to guess at a timeline but said he is hopeful of returning shortly after the All-Star Break.
— Matt Kawahara (@matthewkawahara) July 6, 2023
With this issue being minor, the hope is that Altuve can return shortly after the All-Star Break. Time will tell if that’s the case.
Noah Syndergaard – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
#Dodgers Dave Roberts said Noah Syndergaard’s sim game was pushed back until Friday because “there’s a crazy scenario” where Syndergaard is activated to give coverage out of the bullpen
— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) July 6, 2023
It looks like there’s a real chance that Syndergaard gets activated today and pitches out of the bullpen. Stay tuned to see if this wild and crazy scenario unfolds.
Daniel Hudson – RP Los Angeles Dodgers
Brutal news: Daniel Hudson sprained his MCL on his right knee (not the one he had surgery on). He will be out “quite some time,” Dave Roberts said.
— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) July 6, 2023
Just a brutal blow for Hudson, who worked so hard to return. It hasn’t yet been determined, but he may miss the rest of the season.
Brett Baty – 3B New York Mets
Brett Baty getting rested because of hamstring soreness. Might be available off the bench says Showalter.
— Mike Puma (@NYPost_Mets) July 6, 2023
Consider Baty DTD while this gets sorted out.
Jake Bauers – OF New York Yankees
Jake Bauers has a bruised rotator cuff. Got a cortisone shot. Likely headed for the IL
— Chris Kirschner (@ChrisKirschner) July 7, 2023
Bauers will miss the next ten days or so while he heals up. The hope is that the cortisone shot allows for a quicker comeback.
Oakland Athletics – Team Update
Other A’s injuries:
– Dany Jiménez threw a 20-pitch bullpen
– Ramón Laureano is out of his splint and has started a rehab program with dry swings and tee work
– James Kaprielian received a cortisone shot, no timetable to return to throwing at this time— Martín Gallegos (@MartinJGallegos) July 6, 2023
– Carlos Pérez does not need surgery on his thumb but will be in a splint for at least two weeks
– Freddy Tarnok felt good after throwing a 25-pitch side session. Decision on what is next for him will come Friday
– Mason Miller is in Texas today for a follow up with Dr. Meister— Martín Gallegos (@MartinJGallegos) July 6, 2023
Esteury Ruiz (right shoulder) is feeling better today, per Kotsay. He is still going to undergo an MRI today and is likely unavailable for today’s game. Remains day to day.
— Martín Gallegos (@MartinJGallegos) July 6, 2023
Just a long laundry list of injuries here for the Athletics, who are going through a lot right now. Here are the biggest ones. Laureano fractured his hand a few weeks ago, but it’s encouraging that he’s already out of the splint. He will need a lengthy rehab assignment, however, to work out the kinks. Kaprielian is hopeful that this cortisone shot will minimize his time away from the team. There should be an update soon on Miller’s follow-up appointment with the doctor. As for Ruiz, he will likely not play again until after the All-Star Break. It’s unknown as to whether or not this is a serious injury or a minor one.
Thairo Estrada – 2B San Francisco Giants
How Giants plug second-base hole with Thairo Estrada out 4-6 weeks uncertain https://t.co/AJZd2n7Frr via @sfchronicle
— Susan Slusser (@susanslusser) July 6, 2023
Estrada will need to rest and get treatment, in the hopes that surgery is not required for him. If he does need surgery, we may not see him again this season. As for the second base position, one would guess that Casey Schmitt gets to work things out, but the answer is in the article ($).
Tommy Edman – 2B/SS/OF St. Louis Cardinals
MRI for not show any structural damage, Edman says. He’s encouraged after having the scan. https://t.co/YtAbo5urVF
— Derrick Goold (@dgoold) July 6, 2023
With no structural damage done, the hope is that he can return this weekend.
