Here is the Fantrax Injury Report for Thursday, August 3, 2023. In today’s edition, the Red Sox look to be getting reinforcements to their pitching staff in the near future with Tanner Houck and Garrett Whitlock. Also, Marcus Stroman is on the Injured List with an injury that has lingered for quite some time. Finally, the Jays lost Bo Bichette to a knee injury, but it wasn’t the ominous one that some expected when it first happened. All that and more in the latest Injury Report from Fantrax.

Be prepared.
Trevor Story – 2B/SS Boston Red Sox
Trevor Story won’t be active Friday, Alex Cora says. No setbacks but more likely a case of Story wanting more rehab time at AAA.
— Chris Cotillo (@ChrisCotillo) August 2, 2023
Cora had previously said that whenever he returned would be up to how Story was feeling about it. From the sound of it, he may not feel ready to make his 2023 debut just yet.
Boston Red Sox – Team Update
A few Sox updates:
Houck starts his rehab assignment on Saturday in AAA Whitlock could be Sunday. Sale starts Sunday. He will return to the Sox as a starter.
Sox could use one of the RHs piggybacking Sale.
General hope is to have all three back by the next road trip.
— Pete Abraham (@PeteAbe) August 2, 2023
It looks like the Red Sox will have some reinforcements very soon. How Houck and Whitlock will be used is still unknown.
Marcus Stroman – SP Chicago Cubs
Marcus Stroman, placed on the IL with right hip inflammation, got a cortisone shot today.
Said he’s been dealing with the hip issue for a little while, and it was last start when he felt it needed to be addressed.
More from Stroman and Cubs manager David Ross on the IL move ⬇️ pic.twitter.com/eSSdgDJ6Ns
— Ryan Herrera (@ryan_a_herrera) August 2, 2023
Stroman has been struggling for quite some time. It’s unclear if this is a hip-related issue, but he posted a 9.11 ERA over 26.2 innings pitched in July. The Cubs seem to be making a small push toward trying to make the playoffs, so they’ll likely play him once they feel he is ready to compete.
Liam Hendriks – RP Chicago White Sox
Liam Hendriks underwent Tommy John surgery today, the White Sox announced
He is expected to be out until 2025. pic.twitter.com/ZEfu2yzijJ
— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) August 2, 2023
Hendriks was seemingly making progress toward having a healthier elbow. Instead, he will undergo Tommy John Surgery and miss the rest of this season and most of next. As someone who just beat cancer, there is nobody who needs good news more than him. Here’s hoping this isn’t the last we see of him.
Ben Lively – SP Cincinnati Reds
The #Reds today placed on the 15-day injured list RHP Ben Lively (right pectoral strain) and recalled from Triple-A Louisville RHP Daniel Duarte.
— Cincinnati Reds (@Reds) August 2, 2023
Lively was just obliterated in his last outing, and it’s unclear if this injury co-relates with that performance. Either way, he will miss at least fifteen days with this injury.
Mickey Moniak – OF Los Angeles Angels
Mickey Moniak has a sore foot after fouling a ball off it but has been playing through it. That's part of the reason why Jordyn Adams was called up. Moniak is likely to be get a day off in the coming days.
— Rhett Bollinger (@RhettBollinger) August 1, 2023
This could explain why he missed yesterday’s game. He could also miss some more time in the near future until he has healed. There’s no word on if a trip to the Injured List is forthcoming.
Logan O’Hoppe – C Los Angeles Angels
Catcher Logan O'Hoppe will began a rehab assignment next week. But he will likely need the full 20 days before he returns, manager Phil Nevin said. Encouraging news.
— Rhett Bollinger (@RhettBollinger) August 2, 2023
Fantastic news for the Angels and for fantasy owners everywhere. Look for O’Hoppe to return before September if everything goes well.
J.D. Martinez – UT Los Angeles Dodgers
J.D. Martinez said he couldn’t explain what was wrong with him even after an MRI. It’s essentially sudden tightness in his groin/adductor area. Has happened both times on day games (in TEX, on Sun.) and felt like he couldn’t walk only to feel fine a few hours later.
— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) August 2, 2023
It sounds like Martinez may need some time on the Injured List if things don’t get better soon. Stay tuned.
Sal Frelick – OF Milwaukee Brewers
Sal Frelick gets the day after crashing into the right field wall last night. He said he’s pretty bruised up but an x-ray last night was negative, which is a positive. https://t.co/OKqtRiBs2M
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) August 2, 2023
It remains to be seen if Frelick will require a trip to the Injured List. For now, consider the negative X-rays to be a sign that he is DTD and that’s it.
Byron Buxton – OF Minnesota Twins
Byron Buxton was scratched from the Twins lineup with right hamstring tightness.
— Bobby Nightengale (@nightengalejr) August 2, 2023
Consider Buxton DTD for now, with the realization that anything more is possible given his injury history.
Brandon Nimmo – OF New York Mets
Brandon Nimmo (left quad tightness) says he's at about 90 percent today but won't be in the lineup. He's day-to-day and not particularly worried about it.
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) August 2, 2023
Consider Nimmo DTD with the possibility of returning today against the Royals.
Domingo German – SP New York Yankees
Statement from the New York Yankees: pic.twitter.com/kZhJETdr7x
— New York Yankees (@Yankees) August 2, 2023
German will miss the rest of the season. Here’s hoping that he gets all of the help he needs to get his life in order.
Nestor Cortes – SP New York Yankees
Nestor Cortes is here. He was scheduled to be in Scranton. He says he's probably pitching for the #Yankees one day this weekend. He's not sure which. https://t.co/2ojjNdcIpi
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) August 2, 2023
Be prepared.
Esteury Ruiz – OF Oakland Athletics
Mark Kotsay said Esteury Ruiz came away feeling good from his latest rehab game: “There’s definitely a possibility that he could be with us sooner than later.”
Ruiz is in tonight’s lineup for Triple-A Las Vegas.
— Martín Gallegos (@MartinJGallegos) August 2, 2023
Ruiz has had a successful rehab assignment at the plate and on the basepaths. He seems ready to return any day now. There hasn’t been an update on his throwing ability, which was a concern heading into these games. That said, he should be back soon.
Oneil Cruz – SS Pittsburgh Pirates
Cruz could start a rehab assignment next week, and from the sounds of it, he’s been progressing nicely. The team is very careful with how to move forward with one of their key pieces of the future. He’s been able to do pretty much everything needed to warrant a rehab assignment.
Joe Musgrove – SP San Diego Padres
Joe Musgrove's shoulder has been a bit cranky last couple of outings, and it was not responding well enough to make today's start. He will likely start again in Seattle series.
— Bob Scanlan (@heyscan) August 2, 2023
Musgrove had his start pushed back because of “minor” soreness, and apparently it’s been an ongoing issue. Stay tuned.
Ryan Helsley – RP St. Louis Cardinals
Ryan Helsley is wrapping up a live BP as we arrive to the park today.
— Jeff Jones (@jmjones) August 2, 2023
If things go well after this session and he feels good, Helsley could go on a minor league rehab assignment early next week. He is on track to return just over a week from now.
Shane McClanahan – SP Tampa Bay Rays
#Rays McClanahan felt some tightness on the outside of his left forearm warming up for the 4th inning, will fly back to Tampa on Thursday to have it checked by team doctor.
— Marc Topkin (@TBTimes_Rays) August 3, 2023
There will be more to this story later today. For now, this doesn’t look good, but anything is possible. Stay tuned.
Bo Bichette – SS Toronto Blue Jays
News: Bo Bichette is going on the IL with right patellar tendinitis. #BlueJays
— Keegan Matheson (@KeeganMatheson) August 2, 2023
There was some fear that this would be something torn within the knee, but fortunately for him that wasn’t true. Still, patellar tendinitis is something that can and will keep Bichette out for a while. It hasn’t yet been determined how long he will miss, but it would seem likely that more than the ten-day minimum is warranted.
Jordan Romano – RP Toronto Blue Jays
Jordan Romano is playing catch on flat ground from 75 feet today for the first time since he hit the IL with lower back inflammation.
If all goes well as he increases intensity over the coming days, the Blue Jays closer hopes to be throwing off a mound this weekend.
— Arden Zwelling (@ArdenZwelling) August 2, 2023
The good news is that Romano is now throwing a baseball, which could lead to a quick progression toward the mound. It’s unclear how long it will be before he throws his pitches, but one step at a time for the team’s closer.
