MLB Injury Report
Gabriel Moreno – C Arizona Diamondbacks
The #Dbacks recalled C Jose Herrera from Triple-A Reno and placed C Gabriel Moreno on the 10-day IL (left shoulder inflammation).
— Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) July 23, 2023
Moreno had been dealing with this should inflammation for a while. He will miss at least ten days in order to get himself right, while Carson Kelly takes over the primary catcher’s spot.
A.J. Minter – RP Atlanta Braves
Minter likely to be activated at end of the week, soon as eligible (IL stint backdated to July 12). Dylan Lee will throw another bullpen Tuesday at Boston before they determine if he's ready for a rehab assignment.
— David O'Brien (@DOBrienATL) July 23, 2023
Minter’s first rehab game will take place tomorrow, and it looks like, if all goes well, he’ll be activated shortly afterward.
Max Fried – SP Atlanta Braves
Max Fried will pitch for Gwinnett in Jacksonville on Wednesday
— Justin Toscano (@JustinCToscano) July 23, 2023
There is no clear picture yet as to if this will be Fried’s final rehab appearance.
Trevor Story – 2B/SS Boston Red Sox
Red Sox SS Trevor Story’s rehab assignment to continue in Worcester https://t.co/lQsmUB7MQq
— Christopher Smith (@SmittyOnMLB) July 23, 2023
Story will now face tougher competition, as he will move to Triple-A Worcester. He has gone 2-for-8 thus far with one home run in Double-A Portland.
Nick Madrigal – 2B Chicago Cubs
Nick Madrigal, who was scheduled to be Triple-A Iowa’s DH today while on a rehab assignment (strained right hamstring), is now out of the lineup with what the Cubs described as “general lower body fatigue.”
— Patrick Mooney (@PJ_Mooney) July 23, 2023
This setback will likely delay his return to the Cubs, though it doesn’t sound too serious as of now.
Yoan Moncada – 3B Chicago White Sox
Yoan Moncada could return to lineup from rehab stint Tuesday when White Sox host the Cubs. Pedro Grifol not ruling out Jake Burger playing second base. ‘Why not’?’ Grifol said.
‘They’re both going to be in the lineup somehow, some way.’
— Daryl Van Schouwen (@CST_soxvan) July 23, 2023
With Moncada coming back soon, it would appear that Jake Burger’s presence in the lineup is an absolute must.
Andrew Vaughn – 1B/OF Chicago White Sox
Andrew Vaughn (bone bruise, left foot) is moving around a bit better, and while Grifol remains hopeful he could return Tuesday, the IL is also a possibility. "He tried to hit a little bit but he's still sore. We'll wait and see how he is tomorrow, and make a decision."
— Daryl Van Schouwen (@CST_soxvan) July 23, 2023
Vaughn has had a noticeable limp but is apparently ready to return to the team very soon. He has not played since July 18, and has avoided the Injured List in that time.
Charlie Blackmon – OF Colorado Rockies
#Rockies DH-OF Charlie Blackmon, gaining strength in his fractured right had, is taking dry swings now. Earlier, he was controlling the bat with just the right hand. He has not been hitting baseballs. pic.twitter.com/WIOPTzWnPw
— Thomas Harding (@harding_at_mlb) July 23, 2023
Blackmon taking dry swings with two hands is the first real baseball activity that he has undertaken since being injured in the middle of June. There is no timetable for a return here, as he has quite a long way to go which likely includes a lengthy rehab appearance.
Kyle Freeland – SP Colorado Rockies
#Rockies LHP Kyle Freeland is scheduled for a simulated game Tuesday in Washington and can be back in the rotation next weekend.
— Thomas Harding (@harding_at_mlb) July 23, 2023
Be prepared.
Zach Neto – SS Los Angeles Angels
Zach Neto isn’t expected to play tomorrow, Nevin said. Expects to have him back Tuesday.
— Sam Blum (@SamBlum3) July 23, 2023
It looks like Neto should be back in the Angels’ lineup tomorrow and that his lower-back tightness isn’t overly concerning.
J.D. Martinez – UT Los Angeles Dodgers
#Dodgers DH J.D. Martinez won’t play on Monday night but MGR Dave Roberts expects him to be back on Tuesday. Left hamstring injury not deemed serious enough for an MRI.
— Mike DiGiovanna (@MikeDiGiovanna) July 23, 2023
Martinez might need an extra day off, but this looks to be nothing major. He should be ready to go on Tuesday.
Gavin Lux – 2B/OF Los Angeles Dodgers
Gavin Lux is with the Dodgers in Arlington. Has family in the area and is continuing his rehab from a torn ACL and LCL.
Said he will be able to start running on the field at the end of next week, and could start swinging a bat off a tee in early August.
— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) July 22, 2023
Lux continues to make progress, though be reminded that he likely won’t be back until next season.
Noah Syndergaard – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
Noah Syndergaard retired 15 of 17 going into the 6th, then he ran into the wall, which expectedly being on rehab. 4 seam & 2 seam were both 94 & spin got above 2300 & 30% whiff rate on 4 seam. Wasn't ready for 6 inning length, but, other than that, all was great! #dodgers pic.twitter.com/QNuWReR6pj
— Dodgers Daily (@dodger_daily) July 22, 2023
A tale of two games here, as Syndergaard looked dominant over his first five-plus innings of work. As stated here, he may not have been ready to lengthen out to six innings of work. Of his 77 pitches thrown, 58 of them were for strikes.
Jake Marisnick – OF Los Angeles Dodgers
Jake Marisnick is going to miss at least three weeks with his hamstring strain, Dave Roberts said.
— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) July 21, 2023
It looks like the newly acquired Marisnick won’t be available to return until the middle of August.
Clayton Kershaw – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
Dave Roberts said today Clayton Kershaw will not throw a bullpen session tomorrow. They are pushing it back a few days, but said Kershaw has not had a set back and is still pain free. #Dodgers
— David Vassegh (@THEREAL_DV) July 23, 2023
The team will continue to take things cautiously slow with Kershaw, as he won’t pitch for a few more days.
Rowdy Tellez – 1B Milwaukee Brewers
Rowdy Tellez will get the 17 stitches in his ring finger removed on Tuesday and he wants to start swinging a bat immediately.
Of this whole ordeal, getting hurt shagging fly balls, he said, “It’s kind of embarrassing. I feel like I let my team down.”
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) July 23, 2023
Tellez is still weeks away from returning to the team.
Nestor Cortes – SP New York Yankees
This Nestor Cortes guy is pretty good👀

— Somerset Patriots (@SOMPatriots) July 23, 2023
Cortes threw 42 pitches and looked sharp for the most part. He will need at least two more rehab appearances where he is able to lengthen himself out before returning. He will also continue to work on his secondaries, which he admitted that all four were a focus yesterday. His next start is on Friday.
Aaron Judge – OF New York Yankees
Next steps for Aaron Judge will likely include more hitting under simulated conditions. No set date to play in games yet. “One of the biggest things is going to be building up that little bit of endurance, doing it for a couple of hours at a time,” Aaron Boone said.
— Bryan Hoch ⚾️ (@BryanHoch) July 23, 2023
From the sound of it, Judge still has a ways to go, but the team remains vague about his requiring a rehab appearance. He continues to take minuscule steps forward daily, but he’s at least progressing. There is still no timetable for a return, as the team has been very vague throughout this entire ordeal.
Gleyber Torres – 2B New York Yankees
Aaron Boone said Gleyber Torres’ hip tightened up on him. No word on if he’ll get tests.
— Chris Kirschner (@ChrisKirschner) July 23, 2023
It was originally believed that Torres left for a head injury, but this clarified that statement. As of this writing, there are no tests scheduled for him, but that doesn’t mean things won’t change.
Esteury Ruiz – OF Oakland Athletics
Ruiz needs to be built up, and the biggest way right now is his arm and his ability to throw. Without that, he won’t be able to return. His progress there is something to monitor as he hopefully gets closer to a return.
Lars Nootbar – OF St. Louis Cardinals
#STLCards outfielder Lars Nootbaar was removed with right heel soreness. He is listed as day-to-day.
— John Denton (@JohnDenton555) July 23, 2023
Consider Nootbar DTD while he manages this heel injury, which doesn’t seem overly serious at the moment.
Nolan Gorman – 2B St. Louis Cardinals
#STLCards manager Oli Marmol said lefty slugger Nolan Gorman is dealing with back pain that could keep him out of the lineup for a couple of days. Marmol said he had “zero concern” with Gorman’s back pain.
Infielder Taylor Motter is with the team to replace the injured Gorman.
— John Denton (@JohnDenton555) July 23, 2023
It looks like Gorman will need a couple of days to get himself right, with no indication that he will need a trip to the Injured List. Still, it’s something to monitor as back pains can fester.
Nathan Eovaldi – SP Texas Rangers
The Rangers will skip Nathan Eovaldi against Houston. The velo was down in last outing, despite success. But Bochy said the club had planned for some occasions to skip pitchers this season.
— Evan Grant (@Evan_P_Grant) July 23, 2023
This move was apparently planned, so for now, let’s take it for what it is. Eovaldi is at 123.1 innings pitched, which is the fifth most innings of his career. He will likely surpass other years’ totals if he can remain in the rotation and healthy.
Danny Jansen – C Toronto Blue Jays
UPDATE: C Danny Jansen left today's game with a left forearm contusion.
He underwent X-rays which came back negative for a fracture.
— Toronto Blue Jays (@BlueJays) July 23, 2023
Consider Jansen DTD for now, as we wait to see how he heals over the next little while.
Hyun-Jin Ryu – SP Toronto Blue Jays
Blue Jays scheduled starters this week vs. LA Dodgers:
Mon — Jose Berrios
Tues — Chris Bassitt
Weds — Yusei KikuchiHyun Jin Ryu will meet the club in LA and throw a side session. Next steps TBD. Club is considering a modified six-man rotation for upcoming 17-in-17 stretch.
— Arden Zwelling (@ArdenZwelling) July 23, 2023
It remains to be seen how Ryu will be used as a pitcher for the Jays. It is interesting to note that the team does have seventeen games in seventeen days. Ryu could be a great way to give the regular rotation some additional rest.
