Here is the Fantrax Injury Report for Wednesday, July 26, 2023.
In today’s edition, Gunnar Henderson left yesterday’s game, and there’s been no word on if he will miss any extra time with a back injury that plagued him earlier this season. Also, Trevor Story could be back this weekend, which would be a huge boost to the Boston Red Sox. Finally, both Yordan Alvarez and Jose Altuve could be back at any time, as their status is now a day-by-day thing. All that and more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report
Gunnar Henderson – 3B Baltimore Orioles
Gunnar Henderson left the game due to lower back discomfort. #Orioles
— Rich DubroffMLB (@RichDubroffMLB) July 26, 2023
This isn’t the first time Henderson has had back problems this season, so the team might be extra cautious with him. Expect him to miss at least one game with some update on his status later today.
Aaron Hicks – OF Baltimore Orioles
Aaron Hicks said he should be fine in 10 days. Injured leg going into his dive #orioles
— Roch Kubatko (@masnRoch) July 25, 2023
The injury to Hicks doesn’t sound too serious as he believes that he’ll return within the ten-day minimum.
Trevor Story – 2B/SS Boston Red Sox
Regarding Story, Cora added if he tells them he’s ready to come back this weekend, they’d listen/consider it
— Jen McCaffrey (@jcmccaffrey) July 25, 2023
It sounds like Story’s return depends a lot on how he tells the team he feels. Even if he doesn’t return this weekend, he sounds close to debuting nonetheless.
Chris Sale – SP Boston Red Sox
-Cora says they’re waiting on one move so the lineup will be late
-Sale has an up/down session in Worcester Thursday and could begin a rehab assignment next week. They’re talking about bringing him back sooner and building up innings in Boston— Jen McCaffrey (@jcmccaffrey) July 25, 2023
It’s interesting to note here that the Red Sox are considering bringing up Sale earlier than expected and having him build up his innings with the team. There could be some inherent danger in doing that, but it does mean that he’ll be activated sooner. Keep in mind that he is not eligible to return until August 1.
Kris Bryant – OF Colorado Rockies
#Rockies placing Kris Bryant on the 10-day injured list with a fractured left index finger. 1B Elehuris Montero on his way to DC. RHP Karl Kauffman optioned to @ABQTopes, RHP Riley Pint activated.
— Thomas Harding (@harding_at_mlb) July 25, 2023
Bryant will miss some time while recovering from a fracture in his left index finger. There is no timetable for his return.
C.J. Cron – 1B Colorado Rockies
#Rockies 1B C.J. Cron (low back stiffness) tells me he won't be in the lineup today and probably not tomorrow. He plans to take batting practice today. Swinging doesn't bother him but running, stopping, etc. are issues. He hopes to play after Thursday's day off.
— Thomas Harding (@harding_at_mlb) July 25, 2023
It’s looking like Cron will need a few more days before coming back. With the team having tomorrow off, the hope is that his body will feel well enough to return.
Yordan Alvarez – OF Houston Astros, Jose Altuve – 2B Houston Astros
Astros GM Dana Brown said it looks “very promising” for Jose Altuve and Yordan Alvarez to be in tomorrow’s lineup.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) July 25, 2023
Manager Dusty Baker did say in an interview that he would know about the status of Alvarez earlier in the morning, based on how he (Alvarez) feels when he wakes up. As for Altuve, his return (with or without a rehab assignment) would be based on how he (Altuve) says that he feels.
Jose Urquidy – SP Houston Astros
Jose Urquidy strikes 4 against 1 hit and 1 walk over 4 shutout innings.

— Corpus Christi Hooks (@cchooks) July 26, 2023
Urquidy has pitched well in his rehab outings, and this one is no different. It remains to be seen if he will need another outing before returning.
Zach Neto – SS Los Angeles Angels
Phil Nevin said he’d be surprised if Neto didn’t play tomorrow. That’s their expectation.
He said Neto felt good enough to play today, but Nevin made the call to scratch him. https://t.co/1Yy7tJ2I5G
— Sam Blum (@SamBlum3) July 25, 2023
Neto apparently didn’t look to be 100% ready in warmups, and Nevin took him out of the lineup. It does sound promising for a return later today, however. Stay tuned.
Brandon Drury – INF/OF Los Angeles Angels
Brandon Drury said he hit off the high velo machine today and he’s going to face live pitching on the field tomorrow. Those are the last things he has to do. He may need a few days of that though.
But definitely getting close.
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) July 25, 2023
It sounds like Drury could be back in a few days, and it’s unclear if he’ll need a rehab assignment before doing so. If he can hit off live pitching without any problems, he should be in line for a return shortly afterward.
Mike Trout – OF Los Angeles Angels
Mike Trout on the field doing some running drills. He isn't expected back until August. He has a fractured hamate bone.
— Chris McCosky (@cmccosky) July 25, 2023
Trout is doing his best to keep the rest of his body fresh. However, he will need to properly use a bat and show he can hit. Until then, he remains out with a possible return slated sometime in August.
Francisco Alvarez – C New York Mets
UPDATE: Alvarez says his X-rays came back negative. His concern level, he says, is zero, and he doesn't plan to have any further testing.
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) July 26, 2023
There were concerns following the hit-by-pitch that Alvarez sustained in the game. However, the X-rays came back negative, and apparently, those concerns are gone. He may need a day or two to get himself back to 100% health, but long-term projections look promising.
Starling Marte – OF New York Mets
Starling Marte has hit and run the bases at Yankee Stadium this afternoon. That seems like more good news as he is sidelined by migraines. He is eligible to return from the IL on Thursday.
— Tim Healey (@timbhealey) July 25, 2023
Marte looks to be just about ready to return tomorrow when he’s first eligible to do so. Nothing has been announced, but the writing seems to be on the wall here.
Aaron Judge – OF New York Yankees
Aaron Judge played a five-inning simulated game in Tampa today, per Aaron Boone.
He’s expected to increase volume tomorrow, continuing to take this process day by day.
Still unclear if Judge will go on a rehab assignment, Boone said.
— Max Goodman (@MaxTGoodman) July 25, 2023
Day by day, Judge finds himself closer to a return, but there is no clear picture as to when. The team not ruling out a rehab assignment would add another week to whatever timetable they have for him.
Ke’Bryan Hayes – 3B Pittsburgh Pirates
Sources: Ke’Bryan Hayes is expected to begin a rehab assignment tonight with Triple-A Indianapolis.
— Jason Mackey (@JMackeyPG) July 25, 2023
Hayes did play last night and went 0-for-1 with a walk. There has been no word on how long he will be with Triple-A Indianapolis.
Thairo Estrada – 2B/OF San Francisco Giants
Thairo Estrada will begin a hitting progression today and take grounders. Luis Gonzalez will be on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento. Sounds like Gonzalez is pretty close to being an option.
— Alex Pavlovic (@PavlovicNBCS) July 25, 2023
Estrada has now progressed toward some sort of hitting progression and taking groundballs. There has been no word on what the next step will be and when that will happen. He will likely need a rehab assignment too.
Yandy Diaz – INF Tampa Bay Rays
The Rays say Yandy Diaz has left groin tightness. He will be reevaluated tomorrow, day to day.
— Tricia Whitaker (@TriciaWhitaker) July 26, 2023
Consider Diaz DTD until both we and the team know more about the severity of the situation.
Victor Robles – OF Washington Nationals
And now Victor Robles is here and in a very good mood. Gave us a hearty “Media guys!” and then said he feels “much better.”
— Jesse Dougherty (@dougherty_jesse) July 24, 2023
Robles returning would be a big boost to the Nationals. There have been no updates on his recovery or if the team plans on sending him to a rehab assignment.
