MLB Injury Report
Cedric Mullins – OF Baltimore Orioles
#Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said Cedric Mullins' right quad continues to improve, but it remains a day-to-day situation
— Jake Rill (@JakeDRill) July 17, 2023
Mullins last played on July 15, and he remains DTD while his quad continues to improve. For now, he seems unlikely to go to the Injured List but stay tuned nonetheless.
Rafael Devers – 3B Boston Red Sox
Rafael Devers felt a little tightness in his right calf area yesterday, came to Alex Cora after the game about it. They’re trying to be proactive with it and hope it’s just a one-day thing.
— Mike Monaco (@MikeMonaco_) July 17, 2023
The hope is that Devers can return either later today or tomorrow and not require a stint on the Injured List.
Dansby Swanson – SS Chicago Cubs, Nick Madrigal – 2B/3B Chicago Cubs
#Cubs Dansby Swanson & Nick Madrigal both taking batting practice on the field today
— Taylor McGregor (@Taylor_McGregor) July 17, 2023
Swanson has been out for almost two weeks and hasn’t been active in his recovery process. Madrigal last played on July 4 and has progressed slowly to the point where he not only took batting practice but also fielded some ground balls. It’s unclear if one, both, or neither will need a rehab assignment before returning.
Kansas City Royals – Team Update
#Royals injuries and notes
— Salvador Perez has a Grade 1 plus left hamstring strain. KC hopes he can return to the lineup soon.
— Zack Greinke recently threw a side session. He is trending towards making a start Thursday.
— Edward Olivares is likely to return this week.
— Jaylon T. Thompson (@jaylonthompson) July 17, 2023
Perez will avoid the Injury List for now, as the hope is that he will return to action within a few days. Greinke has been shelved since suffering shoulder tendinitis but seems ready to return soon. Olivares could return at any time, but nothing has been specified just yet.
Wade Miley – SP Milwaukee Brewers
LHP Wade Miley has been placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to July 14, with left elbow discomfort.
A corresponding roster move will be announced tomorrow. pic.twitter.com/yoImmXDPwW
— Milwaukee Brewers (@Brewers) July 18, 2023
Miley had recently returned from a side injury and now will head there for elbow discomfort. The injury came as somewhat of a surprise, given how good he was when he last pitched.
Josh Donaldson – 3B New York Yankees
Josh Donaldson said he has a high-grade strain/small tear in his right calf. He didn't have a timetable for a possible return. #Yankees
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) July 17, 2023
There is talk that this could be season-ending, which could prompt the Yankees to make a trade at the deadline. In the meantime, look for Oswald Peraza to gain a ton of playing time.
New York Yankees – Team Update
Per Aaron Boone:
· Greg Allen’s rehab assignment has been transferred to Scranton, where he will play Tuesday.
· Jake Bauers is going to Scranton as well to work out for a few days before getting in game action.
· Willie Calhoun will do the same at Somerset. #Yankees
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) July 18, 2023
It looks like the Yankees will have a plethora of outfielders back in action over the next two weeks. It’s unclear how much playing time any of them will receive, but none have had any sustained success this season.
Jordan Diaz – 2B Oakland Athletics
Jordan Diaz was pulled from the game due to feeling sick.
— Martín Gallegos (@MartinJGallegos) July 18, 2023
Consider Diaz DTD while he recovers from this ailment.
Tyler O’Neill – OF St. Louis Cardinals
#STLCards OF Tyler O’Neill said today is a work day for him and he hopes to be activated from the 60-day Injured List by tomorrow.
— John Denton (@JohnDenton555) July 17, 2023
O’Neill looks like a candidate to be activated soon, and today might be the day. While this is encouraging to see him return, chances are that the team will be showcasing his talents in order to facilitate a trade. Both he and the team have been seemingly unhappy together for quite a while, and his long absence from the team may have been a result of that unhappiness. Time will tell if he is still a Cardinal by the end of the season.
Hunter Harvey – RP Washington Nationals
Hunter Harvey officially goes on the 15-day IL with a right elbow strain. Joan Adon also optioned to AAA, with Joe La Sorsa recalled and Patrick Corbin activated off the paternity list.
— Mark Zuckerman (@MarkZuckerman) July 17, 2023
Harvey will undergo an MRI to determine the extent of his injury, but the overall feeling isn’t good. Kyle Finnegan will go back to the closer’s role for the time being. There should be a more distinctive timetable for Harvey’s ailment once the results of the MRI are revealed.
