Fantrax Injury Report – Hurting Heim

Here is the Fantrax Injury Report for Saturday, July 29, 2023. In today’s edition, the Texas Rangers got some bad news, as their breakout backstop Jonah Heim would be out for a significant amount of time. What does that mean for them as they move toward the playoffs? Also, the Reds could be getting not one, but two returnees in about three weeks, and they couldn’t be happier. Finally, Shoehei Ohtani cramped up, this time in both legs, for the second consecutive day. What does this mean? All that and more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report

Drey Jameson – SP/RP Arizona Diamondbacks

Jameson was originally slated to have surgery, but he went for a second opinion. He may ultimately need surgery for his elbow, but for now, he will try getting some rest and going to rehab.

Kyle Wright – SP Atlanta Braves

Wright last pitched in May and has just gotten back to being on the mound now. With that estimated return date just over a month away, a lot will need to happen in between now and then.

Max Fried – SP Atlanta Braves

Fingers crossed that this one goes well and that Fried can get back to the Braves.

Cedric Mullins – OF Baltimore Orioles, Aaron Hicks – OF Baltimore Orioles

Both Mullins and Hicks have been out of action for the last little while. Mullins has now begun running again and is aiming to ramp things up soon. Hicks is expected to return within the ten-day (or approximate) window of his Injured List stay. Both outfielders should be back soon enough, with Mullins the one who may need a rehab assignment.

Cincinnati Reds – Team Update

This is good news for both Greene and Lodolo, as there seems to be an end to these extended absences. Both pitchers need about three weeks to get back to the team and help them push toward the playoffs.

Jose Urquidy – SP Houston Astros

If all goes well, Urquidy could be back in about one week, giving the Astros what they need right now: depth at the starting pitcher position.

Nick Pratto – 1B Kansas City Royals

Pratto will remain out of action for at least ten days to get his body right and his swing back. He has struggled mightily as of late. Salvador Perez may end up being the team’s first baseman as he has taken reps, enjoys it there, and started at first base yesterday.

Shohei Ohtani – SP/DH Los Angeles Angels, Zach Neto – SS Los Angeles Angels

Consider Neto DTD for now, but know that more will be known once he is evaluated later today. As for Ohtani, when he was lifted on Thursday, there was minimal worry as he had just pitched and hit in the same doubleheader. Here we are, one day later, and the cramping has now spread over both of his legs. This is something to monitor, though we’ll know more later today after his evaluation. There is still minimal worry here, with a slight chance of it being something significant. At worst, let’s consider him DTD.

Logan O’Hoppe – C Los Angeles Angels

This is fantastic news, as O’Hoppe not only feels great, but he will progress to live BP.

Clayton Kershaw – SP Los Angeles Dodgers

We could see Kershaw back within the rotation very soon, depending on how he feels after a short-inning simulated game this weekend. Stay tuned.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. – 2B/OF Miami Marlins

Chisholm looks like he’s ready to start ramping himself back up toward games. He may need a rehab appearance before he’s ready to play in Miami.

Nestor Cortes – SP New York Yankees

Cortes looked sharp in this one, which included a seven-pitch first inning where he recorded two strikeouts. There was no word (as of this writing) about his velocity.

Lamonte Wade – OF San Francisco Giants

Manager Gabe Kapler clarified after the game that Wade was absent from the game due to injury and not because the pitcher was left-handed. Consider him DTD.

Brandon Crawford – SS San Francisco Giants

It’s looking like Crawford will resume shortstop duties and that Luciano may transition to second base.

Zach Eflin – SP Tampa Bay Rays

It’s great to hear that Eflin is feeling better. Here’s hoping that he can make that start. We should know more within days.

Jonah Heim – C Texas Rangers

Surgery will likely happen at some point before next season. It’s an unfortunate development as he was breaking out this season as one of the game’s most reliable catchers. If he can play through the pain, there is no telling how his game will be affected and if his production at the plate will falter. Mitch Garver will take over as the team’s primary catcher, but he is nowhere near a bevy of health.

Jordan Romano – RP Toronto Blue Jays

We should know more later today, but this doesn’t sound promising for Romano. Remember that he had back problems during the All-Star Break, and a recurring injury such as this could require a trip to the Injured List.

Hyun-Jin Ryu – SP Toronto Blue Jays

Be prepared.
