MLB Injury Report
Sean Murphy – C Atlanta Braves
Snitker said Murphy felt better after running around again this afternoon. But he said they'd wait until tomorrow to decide if Murphy will play in tomorrow afternoon's series finale. I'm convinced Bill Belichick is Snit's injury advisor.
— Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) June 21, 2023
It sounds like Murphy is close to a return and that the Injury List can be avoided. There will undoubtedly be follow-up news regarding this as we get closer to the opening pitch.
Corey Kluber – SP/RP Boston Red Sox
Red Sox have placed Corey Kluber on the 15-day IL with right shoulder inflammation. David Hamilton recalled to take his spot.
— Christopher Smith (@SmittyOnMLB) June 21, 2023
Kluber will need at least fifteen days from which to return. Some believed he would take over for the injured Houck in the rotation, but now that’s off the table.
Dansby Swanson – SS Chicago Cubs
X-rays on Dansby Swanson's right wrist came back negative. Lineup should be out soon so we'll see if they give him the extra rest with two off days coming.
— Sahadev Sharma (@sahadevsharma) June 21, 2023
The Cubs did give Swanson the day off, and he will now get those two days to rest. Time will tell, but it is expected that he will be back on Friday.
Garrett Crochet – RP Chicago White Sox
Under the advice of Dr. Verma, the White Sox lead team doctor, Crochet got a cortisone shot in his left shoulder. He estimates 2-3 week absence before back to game action.
— Scott Merkin (@scottmerkin) June 21, 2023
Crochet recently went on the Injured List with shoulder inflammation and will miss approximately two-to-three weeks of action while he recovers.
Yasmani Grandal – C Chicago White Sox
Pedro Grifol said Yasmani Grandal was scratched before tonight’s game after slipping during his pregame work.
— Vinnie Duber (@VinnieDuber) June 22, 2023
Consider Grandal DTD and likely to return on Friday.
Yoan Moncada – 3B Chicago White Sox
Pedro Grifol had no specifics when asked how much longer before Yoán Moncada returns from the IL. Moncada has been throwing and shagging fly balls, but he’s not hitting yet.
“I don’t have an answer to that. It could be 10 days, it could be two weeks. I don’t have an answer.”
— Vinnie Duber (@VinnieDuber) June 21, 2023
Recurring injuries can be tough to examine since teams and players always want to get to the root of the problem and solve it. In the case of Moncada, the team would be wise to be extra cautious with him, since his back injuries just don’t seem to want to go away. The timeline is quite vague here, so he’s likely at least another week away from returning.
Will Brennan – OF Cleveland Guardians
#Guardians announce Will Brennan left game with left shoulder soreness.
— Chris AssenheimerC-T (@CAwesomeheimer) June 22, 2023
Brennan made a spectacular catch in the outfield but hurt himself in the process. There were no updates after the game, so for now consider him DTD.
Jose Urquidy – SP Houston Astros
José Urquidy threw 17 pitches off the mound today. He will accompany the Astros on their next road trip to continue throwing bullpen sessions there.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) June 21, 2023
Urquidy is slowly getting better as he aims to return at some point in July. He will need to ramp things up toward live hitters before a lengthy rehab assignment.
Logan O’Hoppe – C Los Angeles Angels
Logan O’Hoppe is beginning some very light throwing. The surgery was on his non-throwing shoulder. He’s still not catching the throws back though. pic.twitter.com/PdzwX5cl3w
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) June 21, 2023
It may not seem like much, but it is a big step forward. O’Hoppe has always indicated that he wants to return before the end of the season. This is a good first step toward achieving that goal.
Gio Urshela – INF Los Angeles Angels
Update on Gio Urshela: He does not need surgery, but he is going to be out for the year. #Angels
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) June 21, 2023
While it’s good news that he won’t require surgery, it’s unfortunate in that he will miss the rest of the season. Urshela should be ready for the start of next season, barring any setbacks.
Kenta Maeda – SP Minnesota Twins
Kenta Maeda is scheduled to return from the IL and start Friday in Detroit, Rocco Baldelli said.
— Bobby Nightengale (@nightengalejr) June 21, 2023
Be prepared.
Willie Calhoun – OF New York Yankees
Willie Calhoun is going to get an MRI tomorrow, but he expects to land on the IL after feeling his left quad pop. He said he can't run on it. #Yankees
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) June 22, 2023
Uh oh, hearing anything pop isn’t close to ideal. We’ll know more today after he gets his MRI, but it’s not looking good at all.
Carlos Rodon – SP New York Yankees
Carlos Rodon will make his next rehab start on Sunday at Somerset. He said he’s encouraged with how he’s feeling today after last night’s start.
— Greg Joyce (@GJoyce9) June 21, 2023
So far, so good for Rodon, as his feeling good after his first start is encouraging. We’ll see if that holds true after this start.
Andrew McCutchen – OF Pittsburgh Pirates
Derek Shelton said that Andrew McCutchen is dealing with a sore right elbow. McCutchen was given the day off to manage it.
— Justice delos Santos (@justdelossantos) June 21, 2023
The hope here is that McCutchen getting an extra day off will be enough for him to feel better.
Oneil Cruz – SS Pittsburgh Pirates
Cruz is slowly getting himself back into game shape. The team is being careful with their prized possession which is a big part of their future. Rushing into anything could risk future injury.
Mike Yastrzemski – OF San Francsico Giants
Mike Yastrzemski came out of the game with left hamstring tightness, per the Giants.
— Maria I. Guardado (@mi_guardado) June 22, 2023
The discouraging part of this injury is that it is a recurring injury to the same hamstring that resulted in missed time in May. Consider Yastrzemski DTD until we hear anything else.
Wilmer Flores – INF San Francsico Giants
Wilmer Flores (foot) is running the bases and taking grounders today. He says he will be ready when eligible to come off the IL Monday at Toronto.
— Susan Slusser (@susanslusser) June 21, 2023
Be prepared.
Lamonte Wade – OF San Francisco Giants
LaMonte Wade Jr. tells me he’s better and he’s hoping he in the lineup tomorrow. (That doesn’t rule out being available off the bench tonight.)
— Susan Slusser (@susanslusser) June 21, 2023
It would appear that the MRI Wade had was good enough to warrant his potential availability today.
Jordan Walker – OF St. Louis Cardinals
Jordan Walker dealing with a little bit of an illness, according to Oli Marmol l. So day off comes at a good time despite his ongoing hitting streak.
— Lynn Worthy (@LWorthySports) June 21, 2023
It would appear that this isn’t a big worry at all and that Walker will return when he’s healthy enough to do so.
Bo Bichette – SS Toronto Blue Jays
Bo Bichette was scratched from today's Blue Jays lineup due to soreness in his left thumb. He began experiencing the discomfort during Tuesday's game.
Injury is considered minor and hope is a couple day's rest will be all it needs. Bichette hasn't been sent for X-rays.
— Arden Zwelling (@ArdenZwelling) June 21, 2023
Bichette owners everywhere can exhale and relax. It looks like his injury is a minor one.
Victor Robles – OF Washington Nationals
The Nationals selected the contract of OF Derek Hill from Triple-A and placed CF Victor Robles on 10-day Injured List (back spasms in lumbar spine).
— Jessica Camerato (@JessicaCamerato) June 21, 2023
Robles had just returned from a multi-week absence because of his back, and now he may miss even more because of a recurring ailment. It’s concerning that he is once again injured in the same spot, and we could see something even more serious here. Stay tuned.
