MLB Injury Report
Merrill Kelly – SP Arizona Diamondbacks
Torey Lovullo says Merrill Kelly’s injury is a blood clot in his right calf. He compared it to an issue Ian Kennedy had last year, which was only an 18-day absence, but did not give a timeline.
— Theo Mackie (@theo_mackie) June 27, 2023
Kelly will miss at least 15 days while he attempts to recover from this blood clot. There has been no word on the severity of it, though the comparison to Ian Kennedy does give some reassurance that things may be okay in the long run. There has been no word on a replacement for Kelly in the rotation.
Tanner Houck – SP Boston Red Sox
From the #RedSox: Boston Red Sox right-handed pitcher Tanner Houck today underwent a successful open reduction and internal fixation of a right orbito-zygomatico-maxillary complex (OZMC) fracture. The procedure was performed by Dr. Branko Bojovic at Mass General Hospital.
— Mac Cerullo (@MacCerullo) June 28, 2023
The good news is that the surgery was a success. There has been no timeline for a return from Houckj, but he is expected to return at some point in 2023.
Marcus Stroman – SP Chicago Cubs
Cubs anticipating Marcus Stroman (blister) will make his next start this weekend. Has an extra day between starts with Monday's off day.
Cubs will know for sure after Stroman throws his usual between-starts bullpen in the next day or two.

Be prepared.
Yoan Moncada – 3B Chicago White Sox

— Scott Merkin (@scottmerkin) June 27, 2023
While it’s good to see Moncada get onto the field with a glove, he still needs to progress toward hitting drills. He still has a long way to go until he returns and will likely need a rehab assignment. He isn’t expected back until July.
Liam Hendriks – RP Chicago White Sox
Liam Hendriks will play catch Wednesday for first time since going on IL, but there’s no timetable yet for White Sox closer’s return.
— Daryl Van Schouwen (@CST_soxvan) June 27, 2023
This is good to see, as he has been shut down since going to the Injured List. The plan is to bring him back slowly, but he should start progressing forward soon.
Hunter Greene – SP Cincinnati Reds
The news on Lodolo has been known for weeks, but this timeline on Greene is a bit surprising. Greene is apparently awaiting a second opinion on his hip, but it appears either way that he will be missing in action for quite a while. Fantasy owners should have plans in place to replace Greene’s numbers for a long time.
Cal Quantrill – SP Cleveland Guardians
Cal Quantrill will start for the Guardians on Friday in Chicago.
— Mandy Bell (@MandyBell02) June 27, 2023
Be prepared.
Matthew Boyd – SP Detroit Tigers
Matthew Boyd is going to have Tommy John surgery https://t.co/LfdO0SlGsr
— Cody Stavenhagen (@CodyStavenhagen) June 27, 2023
Boyd left his start early against the Rangers after a wild pitch. It was later revealed that he would require Tommy John Surgery. He will miss the rest of this season and most of next season as a result.
Jose Urquidy – SP Houston Astros
Urquidy threw 25 pitches in the bullpen today, hitting 92-93 mph in what he called a "big step." He usually is 87-88 while throwing in the bullpen. He had no issues and will throw one more bullpen before facing hitters.
— Brian McTaggart (@brianmctaggart) June 27, 2023
A good step forward, but it will be interesting to see how his body recovers after this big jump in velocity. He has yet to face live hitters, which would be the next hurdle to clear.
Jose Altuve – 2B Houston Astros

— Brian McTaggart (@brianmctaggart) June 27, 2023
Altuve missed last night but seems poised and ready to return today. He has missed the last two games.
Anthony Rendon – 3B Los Angeles Angels

— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) June 27, 2023
This is a big step forward for Rendon, as he inches his way toward a return. He could be back in the lineup within a week, though it’s unclear if he’ll need a rehab assignment.
Walker Buehler – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
Walker Buehler threw a bullpen session at @camelbackranch!

— Blue Heaven (A Dodgers Podcast) (@BlueHeavenPod) June 22, 2023
This is great to see, as Buehler is starting his long journey to return from Tommy John Surgery. He has stated many times that his goal is to be back on September 1, so he’s got a ways to go before that happens.
Julio Urias – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
#Dodgers LHP Julio Urias will be activated off IL to start Saturday’s game in KC.
— Mike DiGiovanna (@MikeDiGiovanna) June 27, 2023
Be prepared.
Brandon Woodruff – SP Milwaukee Brewers
Brandon Woodruff mixed in offspeed during a successful 25-pitch bullpen this afternoon. He still has a series of bullpens ahead and the timeline is TBD, based on how many rehab starts he makes. He will stay in Milwaukee during the All-Star break to continue his throwing program.
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) June 27, 2023
Woodruff has now advanced to mixing in his secondary pitches, so that’s a positive sign, He’ll need to continue this progression as he attempts to return from this long-standing injury. He is likely to return around the beginning of August, as he’s stated that he will take his time to do so.
Jose Quintana – SP New York Mets
Quintana was hoping to return sooner than this, but the Mets have other plans. It’s looking like he will be back after the All-Star Break, regardless of what he does during his next rehab outing.
Yu Darvish – SP San Diego Padres
Well …
Yu Darvish will miss tonight’s start due to illness.
Reiss Knehr will start for the Padres.— Kevin Acee (@sdutKevinAcee) June 27, 2023
It’s unclear if Darvish will pitch when he’s healthy or if they’ll skip his turn altogether.
Tyler O’Neill – OF St. Louis Cardinals
Tyler O'Neill said he hopes to be able to go on a minor-league rehab assignment next week. #STLCards
— Lynn Worthy (@LWorthySports) June 27, 2023
This is good news for O’Neill, as he had been at a crossroads of not knowing what to do or how to get better. This rehab assignment will likely be lengthy.
Brandon Lowe – 2B Tampa Bay Rays
#Rays B. Lowe (back) will join AAA @DurhamBulls in Jacksonville and start playing Wednesday. If all goes well he could rejoin #Rays next week at home
— Marc Topkin (@TBTimes_Rays) June 28, 2023
Fantastic news with the end in sight. Fingers crossed that all goes well for Lowe.
Shane McClanahan – SP Tampa Bay Rays
This is a relief for some as McClanahan’s exit was precautionary. All that being said, there are some close-to-red warning flags here. For one, his back injuries seem to be a recurring thing. That was two starts in a row where he was bothered by them. Secondly, these injuries limit his extension and diminish the velocity of his fastball, making him less effective if he tries to pitch through it. Third, the team used the word “workload” as a reason for taking him out of the last game. As such, this could be an issue down the road. For reference, he pitched 91 innings of work last year by this point, and this year has thrown 93 innings.
Alejandro Kirk – C Toronto Blue Jays
#BlueJays injury updates:
– Garcia (knee) feeling better today, ideally not used tonight but likely no IL
– Kirk (hand) threw, hit velo, caught a side session. Trending to come off IL Thurs
– Heineman (side) MRI came back clean, good to go
– Pop (hammy) another AAA outing Wed— Mitch Bannon (@MitchBannon) June 27, 2023
Be prepared. If not Thursday, should be shortly after.
