Kyle Wright – SP Atlanta Braves, Max Fried – SP Atlanta Braves
Expectation has been Fried and Wright will both be sidelined for at least two months. With this being his second shoulder ailment of the year, Wright thinks he could be out longer than Fried.
— Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) May 10, 2023
Wright’s injury is definitely scarier than Fried’s because, as indicated, this is the second one of the year. It’s also expected to be the longer-lasting one as well, but both are expected to be long-term problems. They’re likely to be shut down for three to four weeks before anything happens.
Garrett Whitlock – SP Boston Red Sox
A few #RedSox updates:
* Garrett Whitlock has a 3-inning sim game at Fenway tomorrow, a rehab game Tuesday and could return (as a starter) on the road trip.
* Joely Rodriguez has the second half of a back-to-back tonight, his last test before being activated in the coming days.
— Pete Abraham (@PeteAbe) May 10, 2023
It still feels like this is optimistic and perhaps pushing the envelope, but it’s good news nonetheless for Whitlock. The aforementioned road trip begins on May 19, so the time to return is coming.
Liam Hendriks – RP Chicago White Sox
Pedro Grifol said Liam Hendriks has three more rehab outings left at least. Back to back outings tonight and tomorrow, two days off, then pitching on Sunday. They’ll evaluate where he’s at after that.
— James Fegan (@JRFegan) May 10, 2023
The fact that Henbdriks is going back-to-back now is a great development for him. In his three outings thus far, Hendriks has surrendered just one run over three innings pitched, while striking out two and walking none. It’s looking like he will return later this month, making him the feel-good story of the year.
Joey Votto – 1B Cincinnati Reds
Votto doesn’t have a timetable for a return yet, but he is feeling better. That being said, he hasn’t appeared in a rehab game since April 14, and will likely need his next rehab to be lengthy. Expecting him back before June is not something to count on.
Antonio Senzatela – SP Colorado Rockies
Bud Black days Antonio Senzatela has right forearm tightness. He’ll be examined tomorrow in Denver. #Rockies
— Patrick Saunders (@psaundersdp) May 10, 2023
Regardless of how serious any damage from the testing is revealed, there’s a chance that an already bad rotation gets even worse. Stay tuned.
Michael Brantley – OF Houston Astros
The Astros sent Michael Brantley back for further testing. He is “more sore than usual because he played a lot” on his minor league rehab assignment, Dusty Baker said.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) May 10, 2023
The team continues to be very vague when it comes to Bratnley because we were told he didn’t suffer a setback. Now, he has renewed soreness because he’s playing a lot. It’s interesting to note too that the team’s head trainer has been continuously unavailable during some discussions with the media, so there’s a chance that information gets misinterpreted. Either way, Brantley is one of many frustrating players to manage.
Chas McCormick – OF Houston Astros
Chas McCormick is out of the lineup with a sore back, Dusty Baker said. Baker said he “overdid it” on his minor league rehab assignment and also wondered whether Michael Brantley did something similar.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) May 10, 2023
The question of what is happening during these rehabs is something that might need to be re-examined by the team. If players are having setbacks like this, some accountability needs to be taken as well.
Jared Walsh – 1B Los Angeles Angels
Notable Jared Walsh update: his last treatment will be tomorrow. He’s set to play for Salt Lake Friday in Sacramento.
— Erica Weston (@EricaLWeston) May 10, 2023
A really positive development. If healthy, Walsh has a chance for a resurgence. That said, it’s a big “if” since he’s missed so much time with an abundance of injuries.
Max Scherzer – SP New York Mets
Max Scherzer tried to play catch just now but it didn't last long or go well. His neck is still "in spasm," as he put it. But he feels better today than he did yesterday.
"It hasn't fully let go yet," he said.
The Mets plan to slot him in during the Nationals series.
— Tim Healey (@timbhealey) May 10, 2023
Not a promising development here if Scherzer can’t even play catch. Today is a new day, so we shall see what happens.
Jose Alvarado – RP Philadelphia Phillies
Thomson: MRI looked good for José Alvarado. Only inflammation. He won’t throw for a few days, but they’ll take it slow.
— Matt Gelb (@MattGelb) May 10, 2023
A big sigh of relief as Alvarado had been dealing all season. Chances are he’ll be able to return at some point in June, assuming all goes well after being shut down.
Ranger Suarez – SP Philadelphia Phillies
#Phillies rotation in Colorado:
Friday- Walker
Saturday- Suarez
Sunday- Nola
Bailey Falter will start the first game in San Francisco on Monday night.— Scott Lauber (@ScottLauber) May 10, 2023
Be prepared.
ONeil Cruz – SS Pittsburgh Pirates, Vince Velasquez – SP Pittsburgh Pirates
Oneil Cruz has began upper-body seated strengthening. He has four weeks of non-weight bearing remaining.
Vince Velasquez has resumed throwing. Projected to throw a live bullpen next week.
Ji Man Choi is three weeks post-PRP and out of the walking boot.
— Justice delos Santos (@justdelossantos) May 10, 2023
It’s a long road back for Cruz, but he’s going to work at it until he’s ready to return. As for Velasquez, it’s good to see that he’s already started throwing and will ramp things up next week.
Tyler Glasnow – SP Tampa Bay Rays
Tyler Glasnow update after he was removed after the first inning of his second rehab start (was expected to go four).
Glasnow has generalized left-sided tightness, very mild in nature.
It was a mutual decision for halting outing.
And as Rays explained it “there was no upside…
— Tricia Whitaker (@TriciaWhitaker) May 10, 2023
The good news is that everyone involved agreed to stop any and all pitching and let it work itself out. That said, this is another setback in Glasnow’s quest to return, so his ETA will need to be adjusted. Stay tuned.
Corey Seager – SS Texas Rangers

This will lead into the Rangers’ homestand that begins on May 15. The team is hopeful that he’ll return somewhere during those seven days when Texas is at home.
