Here is the Fantrax Injury Report for Wednesday, August 9, 2023. In today’s edition, Ronald Acuna got hit by a pitch yesterday, but it turns out things will be okay for him. Also, Cedric Mullins seems to be close to a return, which is great news for the Orioles. Finally, Mike Trout continues to progress, albeit slowly, and shouldn’t need long to ramp himself up. All that and much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report
Gabriel Moreno – C Arizona Diamondbacks
Moreno has been out of action for quite some time but looks to be back soon. If all goes well here physically, we could see a return soon enough.
Ronald Acuna – OF Atlanta Braves
OF Ronald Acuña Jr. was removed from tonight’s game after being hit by a pitch on his left elbow. X-rays were negative.
— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) August 9, 2023
This comes with a collective sigh of relief, as there was some concern for Acuna’s elbow. While these X-rays eliminate the chance of any structural damage done, it’s still possible that he misses a game or two while the elbow heals.
Ramon Urias – INF Baltimore Orioles
Ramon Urias left the game with left heel discomfort, the Orioles say
— Jacob Calvin Meyer (@jcalvinmeyer) August 9, 2023
Consider Urias DTD until we get more information.
John Means – SP Baltimore Orioles
LHP John Means is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment on Thursday with Double-A Bowie. #orioles
— Roch Kubatko (@masnRoch) August 8, 2023
This is great news, as Means had been progressing in his bullpen sessions. He had Tommy John Surgery early in the season last year and was trending toward a late summer return.
Baltimore Orioles – Team Update
Updates from Brandon Hyde:
• Adam Frazier jammed his thumb in the turf during the final game in Toronto, but he’s available off the bench tonight
• Cedric Mullins is playing for Bowie again tonight. “Getting really close” to return
• Aaron Hicks is close to rehab assignment— Andy Kostka (@afkostka) August 8, 2023
Frazier did enter the game off the bench against the Blue Jays, so he looks ready to return to the starting lineup soon enough. As for Mullins, he may only need another day or two before being back with the Orioles. Finally, Hicks seems to be about one week behind Mullins in his progression.
Justin Turner – INF Boston Red Sox
Trevor Story is hitting third today. Justin Turner won't play due to lingering heel soreness. Expected to miss a couple days but IL not on the table yet.
— Chris Cotillo (@ChrisCotillo) August 8, 2023
Turner continues to miss time due to soreness on his heel that won’t go away. That said, he isn’t expected to go to the Injured List, so his status remains DTD.
Yasmani Grandal – C Chicago White Sox
Yasmani Grandal was removed from tonight's game with left knee soreness. He is day-to-day.
— Chicago White Sox (@whitesox) August 9, 2023
Consider Grandal DTD until we hear more news later today.
Brendan Rodgers – 2B Colorado Rockies
#Rockies manager Bud Black said 2B Brendan Rodgers tweaked his right hamstring when he went to his right for a grounder and threw across his body in the first inning last night. He stayed in but felt tight when he woke up this morning. He'll likely rest tonight and tomorrow.
— Thomas Harding (@harding_at_mlb) August 8, 2023
This injury seems to be more of a DTD sort of thing than an Injury List designation. Stay tuned for updates, but this doesn’t seem to be a long-standing issue.
Zack Greinke – SP Kansas City Royals
We have made the following roster moves: pic.twitter.com/KtWw6C8iuv
— Kansas City Royals (@Royals) August 8, 2023
Greinke will miss two weeks with an elbow injury but is expected back before the season ends.
Zach Neto – SS Los Angeles Angels
Zach Neto underwent further testing that revealed more inflammation in his back. He’s expected to be out several weeks but should return before the end of the season, Nevin said.
— Rhett Bollinger (@RhettBollinger) August 8, 2023
Neto has had on-and-off back pains for the better part of the past month. It looks like he will miss most, if not all, of August, recovering from this ailment.
Mike Trout – OF Los Angeles Angels
Trout continues to slowly get better and progress in his abilities. The encouraging part here is that it’s believed that his ramp-up shouldn’t take too long. What that means as a timeline is unknown, but it is something to note.
Logan O’Hoppe – C Los Angeles Angels
Logan O’Hoppe said he’s starting his rehab assignment with Single-A Inland Empire tomorrow
— Rhett Bollinger (@RhettBollinger) August 7, 2023
While this is great news as O’Hoppe enters the final stage of his recovery, it’s important to note that it’s been said he’ll need close to the 20-day allotted maximum amount of time before coming back. So essentially he has almost three weeks before returning.
J.D. Martinez – UT Los Angeles Dodgers
J.D. Martinez is going to get scratched from the Dodgers lineup. Same issue that caused him to miss time recently (hamstring/adductor).
Kiké Hernández will DH today.
— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) August 9, 2023
Martinez missed three games of action last week and it was believed, at the time, that he would require a trip to the Injured List. Then, things started to feel better and he was able to play over the weekend. Now that the injury has resurfaced, it’s unclear what the next steps will be for him from the team. Stay tuned.
Carlos Santana – 1B Milwaukee Brewers
Carlos Santana was scratched from the Brewers lineup today with an illness. Mark Canha will start at first base for the first time since the trade.
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) August 8, 2023
Consider Santana DTD while he gets himself better.
Max Kepler – OF Minnesota Twins
Max Kepler said the pitch missed his pinky toe and instead hit his second and middle toes, which he considers dodging a bullet. Said he wasn't angry at the pitcher but was frustrated w/ the situation seeing as he broke his pinky toe in Detroit in July 2022. #MNTwins
— DanHayesMLB (@DanHayesMLB) August 8, 2023
Kepler was hit by a pitch on Monday, and we now know the details of the injury. Consider him DTD while the toes get better, but he may need another day or two.
Starling Marte – OF New York Mets
Starling Marte update: He received an injection in his right groin today, the Mets announced. He will be cleared for "light activity in the next few days."
— Tim Healey (@timbhealey) August 8, 2023
Marte is hopeful to return to light activity, which could lead to more intensified activities afterward. There’s no timetable for a return, and given the uncompetitive nature of the Mets, they are likely in no rush for him to return either.
Carlos Rodon – SP New York Yankees
Carlos Rodon is expected to keep throwing on flat ground while on the IL, which potentially could allow him to have the minimum stay: https://t.co/j6DjF1AIL0 via @nypostsports
— Greg Joyce (@GJoyce9) August 8, 2023
Rodon felt like he would be able to pitch through this injury, so his throwing on flat ground shouldn’t be too surprising. It looks like it will be a short-term stay on the Injured List, for now.
Bryan Woo – SP Seattle Mariners
There are “no real concerns” about Bryan Woo’s right forearm inflammation, per Mariners GM Justin Hollander. The IL stint was out of “an abundance of caution.”
He felt more sore than usual coming out of his start on Thursday, which led to today’s move.
— Daniel Kramer (@DKramer_) August 8, 2023
Woo was placed on the Injured List yesterday with right forearm inflammation, but this report makes it seem more precautionary than anything. While it’s possible that this is an attempt to limit his innings, it’s still even more possible that there is an issue worth monitoring here.
Tyler O’Neill – OF St. Louis Cardinals
O'Neill scratched with left knee tightness, per #stlcards official. He is considered day-to-day, as are we all. https://t.co/csiJgE7smX
— Derrick Goold (@dgoold) August 8, 2023
O’Neill took part in the pre-game workout, but the decision was made to bench him. Consider him DTD until we know more about the situation.
Tyler Glasnow – SP Tampa Bay Rays
#Rays Cash also said Glasnow received an injection in his back and will be shut down for 2 days, with the hope he could pitch Saturday vs. #Guardians
— Marc Topkin (@TBTimes_Rays) August 8, 2023
The news here is somewhat promising but does come with a lot of hope. The Rays are decimated with injuries and need Glasnow if they have any postseason aspirations. Consider him DTD for now, but there is a chance that he heads to the Injured List, albeit with a shortened retroactive date.
Shane McClanahan – SP Tampa Bay Rays
Rays manager Kevin Cash announced that Shane McClanahan is “highly unlikely” to pitch again this season, per @TBTimes_Rays pic.twitter.com/4WrannMHnr
— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) August 8, 2023
McClanahan has seen many doctors and specialists, and there haven’t been many details released yet on their meetings. Manager Kevin Cash said that surgery is an option for him, but didn’t specify what exactly it would be. This is all quite ominous for one of the best pitchers in baseball and arguably the biggest piece of the Rays’ postseason hopes.
Jordan Romano – RP Toronto Blue Jays
Jordan Romano (back) is scheduled to throw another bullpen Wednesday.
He responded well to his last mound session on the weekend. Blue Jays still undecided whether he'll require a rehab outing or not before being activated from IL.
— Arden Zwelling (@ArdenZwelling) August 8, 2023
Romano continues to progress well and could be back soon enough. Stay tuned on whether or not he will need that rehab assignment first.
