Here is the Fantrax Injury Report for Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Inside today’s edition, both Shane Bieber and Ryan Helsley have been placed on the 60-day Injured List, as their returns will need extended time away. Also, there’s a potential delay in the return of Hyun-Jin Ryu to the active lineup, and it might be more strategic than anything. Finally, Merrill Kelly will likely make his long-awaited return to the Diamondbacks. All of this and more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report
Merrill Kelly – SP Arizona Diamondbacks
Merrill Kelly will start tomorrow for the Arizona Diamondbacks. That will give Gallen an extra days rest for a Wednesday start.
— John Gambadoro (@Gambo987) July 24, 2023
Be prepared.
Aaron Hicks – OF Baltimore Orioles
Aaron Hicks with a diving attempt at a catch. Slow to get up. Brian Ebel and Brandon Hyde checking on him. Replay shows that ball came out of glove. Waiting to see if Phillies challenge. Hicks walking slowly off field now. Colton Cowser replaces him #orioles
— Roch Kubatko (@masnRoch) July 24, 2023
The injury doesn’t appear to be too serious, and Hicks should be back at some point in the near future.
Shane Bieber – SP Cleveland Guardians
The Guardians have called up LHP Daniel Norris and optioned LHP Tim Herrin.
To make room on the 40-man roster, Shane Bieber has been moved to the 60-day IL.
— Mandy Bell (@MandyBell02) July 24, 2023
Bieber was in the middle of being shut down from throwing for two weeks and had another week left of that preliminary plan. Now, this gives him additional time to throw, while also more rest. One has to wonder if his season might be done altogether as he won’t be eligible to return until September 10. There’s no indication of him being ready by then anyways. Time will tell, but the team has indicated that surgery will not be needed and that rest is the best thing for him.
CJ Cron – 1B Colorado Rockies
There’s been no indication if Cron’s return is imminent or not, but it would appear that he is on his way back in the near future.
Jose Altuve – 2B Houston Astros
Dusty Baker said “it is possible” Jose Altuve could be activated without needing a rehab assignment, but he hasn’t spoken to Altuve about that yet.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) July 24, 2023
While this feels like speculation, Altuve is talented enough to do this. That being said, he hasn’t played since July 4, and he will have already surpassed three weeks away as of this writing.
Yordan Alvarez – OF Houston Astros
Dusty Baker said the Astros are still evaluating Yordan Alvarez and it’s possible he could be activated tomorrow or Wednesday. Previous tweet had a typo.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) July 24, 2023
Fantasy owners will unfortunately have to play the waiting game while Alvarez gets evaluated. Consider his return a day-by-day situation.
Noah Syndergaard – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
Noah Syndergaard was throwing at Dodger Stadium before Monday’s game. Just checking in on his rehab assignment
He’s started twice for Oklahoma City and will again on Thursday. After that, Dave Roberts said, “that’s when the rubber meets the road, and we have to make a decision”
— Eric Stephen (@ericstephen) July 24, 2023
Syndergaard will have nine days remaining in his rehab after his outing on Thursday. He will continue to work on getting stretched out for a return to the rotation.
Clayton Kershaw – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
Plan is for Clayton Kershaw to throw his bullpen session tomorrow.
“Unless something changes,” Dave Roberts added.
— Matthew Moreno (@Matthew__Moreno) July 24, 2023
The team originally announced that his bullpen session from yesterday was pushed back. It turns out that it was only pushed back for one day. Kershaw has maintained that he’s felt great after each and every one of these sessions.
J.D. Martinez – UT Los Angeles Dodgers
Dave Roberts said J.D. Martinez wasn’t available to pinch-hit tonight, but is still expected to start at DH Tuesday
— Eric Stephen (@ericstephen) July 25, 2023
Martinez was originally available to pinch-hit, but it turns out that plans had changed. Consider him DTD and keep an eye out for his status in today’s lineup.
Brandon Woodruff – SP Milwaukee Brewers
Brandon Woodruff said all went well in his first rehab start Saturday — he actually had to go throw 10 more pitches in the bullpen after. He starts Thursday in Grand Chute, then likely August 1 for Nashville. After that? He and the Brewers will evaluate, with activation possible.
— Curt Hogg (@CyrtHogg) July 24, 2023
Woodruff just threw his first rehab game recently and things went smoothly. The team seemed very encouraged by the results. Time will tell how he feels after his second game and the team will have a better idea of his status then.
Byron Buxton – OF Minnesota Twins
#MNTwins place Byron Buxton on the paternity list. Trevor Larnach gets recalled.
— DanHayesMLB (@DanHayesMLB) July 24, 2023
The Buxton family is wished all the best.
Starling Marte – OF New York Mets
Marte is eligible to return on Thursday, so keep an eye on his status as we approach that day.
Ramon Laureano – OF Oakland Athletics
Guessing that Ramón Laureano returns on Tuesday. https://t.co/VczH1v3kaj
— Melissa Lockard (@melissalockard) July 24, 2023
While this is speculation, it does make sense, given how well Laureano has looked during his rehab assignment. Stay tuned.
Willson Contreras – C St. Louis Cardinals
Willson Contreras (hip) will get one more rest day, will catch tomorrow.
Your #STLCards for the first of 3 against Arizona:
1. Donovan DH
2. Goldschmidt 3
3. Arenado 5
4. Nootbaar 7
5. Walker 9
6. Carlson 8
7. DeJong 6
8. Motter 4
9. Knizner 2Wainwright 1
— Katie Woo (@katiejwoo) July 24, 2023
It looks like Contreras will be back in the lineup later today.
Ryan Helsley – RP St. Louis Cardinals
We have made the following roster moves: pic.twitter.com/tu56yyGfWy
— St. Louis Cardinals (@Cardinals) July 24, 2023
Helsley just recently threw a bullpen session last week, but has now been transferred to the 60-day Injured List. He is eligible to return on August 12, and there’s some concern that it might be later than that. He will undoubtedly need a rehab assignment before rejoining the Cardinals.
Adolis Garcia – OF Texas Rangers
An injury update on Adolis Garcia ⬇️

Garcia was unable to grip a bat yesterday, hence his absence. He did say, however, that he thinks he’ll be ready to return later today. Stay tuned.
Hyun-Jin Ryu – SP Toronto Blue Jays
Hyun Jin Ryu not likely to start vs. Angels this weekend though that hasn’t been fully ruled out. More likely he de-loads a bit with some sort of sim game before entering #BlueJays’ rotation per John Schneider
— Ben Nicholson-Smith (@bnicholsonsmith) July 25, 2023
Reasons they might do that. 1) If Ryu were to start Friday for ex., it's a scene – sold-out Jays crowd vs. Ohtani 2) Ryu helps space out rotation better if he's used in *middle* of upcoming 17-in-17 stretch 3) as @BlakeMurphyODC said, 40-man picture will be clearer post-deadline
— Ben Nicholson-Smith (@bnicholsonsmith) July 25, 2023
This definitely throws a wrench into anyone planning to activate Ryu in their fantasy leagues. The fact that the team will still cautiously approach him is eye-opening and should be noted. He is coming back so soon from a long-standing injury that takes a while to heal. It also looks like they’re strategizing how and when to bring him back, so as to manipulate their bench and know what they’re doing at the deadline. This could be another week of him on the Injured List.
Lane Thomas – OF Washington Nationals
Lane Thomas got hit by a pitch on the side of his left knee in the 8th and came out of the game as a precaution. They'll see how he's feeling when he gets to the ballpark tomorrow.
— Mark Zuckerman (@MarkZuckerman) July 25, 2023
Consider Thomas DTD as we wait to see an update later today.
