Here is the Fantrax Injury Report for Saturday, July 8, 2023. Down below, you’ll see the latest on Dansby Swanson, who has decided that he won’t play in the All-Star Game next week. Could that be a sign of the seriousness of his situation, or merely him just wanting to get healthy and focus on himself? Also, potentially big steps forward in Houston, where both Yordan Alvarez and Jose Urquidy will help each other out in their recovery this weekend. Finally, the Cardinals lost two key pieces to their team yesterday and will be without them for the next little while. How serious are their injuries? All that, and more in today’s Injury Report, from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report
Drey Jameson – SP/RP Arizona Diamondbacks
Torey Lovullo level of concern about Drey Jameson is “fairly high.” pic.twitter.com/4cW0YuYmUc
— Mark McClune (@MarkMcClune) July 7, 2023
Jameson apparently felt good enough to pitch on Thursday to throw 55 pitches, but later had tightness in his forearm area. He will undergo an MRI to determine the extent of the injury.
Merrill Kelly – SP Arizona Diamondbacks
Merrill Kelly tossed 45 pitches with three up-downs yesterday in a bullpen, Torey Lovullo said. Kelly is getting an ultrasound today.
"We're trying to figure out where he's going to land on the other side of the All-Star break. Those are discussions we're having right now."
— Alex Weiner (@alexjweiner) July 6, 2023
Manager Lovullo has re-iterated many times that Kelly is in a good spot right now. The biggest concerns here lie in not knowing exactly what the problem is and how to fix things.
Austin Hays – OF Baltimore Orioles
Austin Hays said he is available tonight, hopes to start tomorrow. Obv excited 4 All Star gm start. Did early pregm work already tdy and more progress.
— Steve Melewski (@masnSteve) July 7, 2023
His availability last night seemingly means that Hays will be in the lineup before the All-Star Break.
Dansby Swanson – SS Chicago Cubs
Dansby Swanson, who has been dealing with a bruised heel, has decided he won’t play in the All-Star Game.
— Maddie Lee (@maddie_m_lee) July 7, 2023
This doesn’t necessarily mean that Swanson is headed to the Injured List. It does, however, show the seriousness of the ailment. Stay tuned.
Riley Greene – OF Detroit Tigers
The #Tigers plan to activate Riley Greene from the injured list Saturday, A.J. Hinch said. He is expected to start as the designated hitter against the Blue Jays.
— Evan Petzold (@EvanPetzold) July 7, 2023
Be prepared.
Yordan Alvarez – OF Houston Astros, Jose Urquidy – OF Houston Astros
Yordan Alvarez hit on the field today at Minute Maid Park. He could face José Urquidy in a live batting practice session on Sunday. Alvarez will continue to work out with the team’s coaching staff in Seattle during All Star week
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) July 7, 2023
This is significant for both players. Alvarez will hit against a live pitcher for the first time in his recovery and could signify that a return is closer. As for Urquidy, if he goes through this live BP without any issues, he might be ready for a rehab assignment in the near future.
Brandon Drury – INF Los Angeles Angels
Brandon Drury is still having some soreness in his shoulder. The Angels are “running some tests to check things out,” Nevin said. “We’ll probably have some answers for you on that soon.”
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) July 8, 2023
Stay tuned as there could be a lot more to the story here if the results show more than a left shoulder contusion.
Zach Neto – SS Los Angeles Angels
Also, Zach Neto has been hitting off a machine. He’s going to face live pitching soon.
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) July 8, 2023
That live BP will happen later today. He is tracking for a return after the All-Star Break.
Noah Syndergaard – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
#Dodgers Dave Roberts said Noah Syndergaard will go out on a rehab assignment. Time TBA. How long it lasts will be contingent on “health and performance”
— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) July 7, 2023
Apparently, Syndergaard’s velocity has been around 93-94 mph, and his latest three-inning simulated game went well.
Jake Bauers – INF/OF New York Yankees, Nestor Cortes – SP New York Yankees
Prior to tonight’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves:
•Returned from rehab and reinstated LHP Carlos Rodón (#55) from the 60-day injured list.
•Transferred LHP Nestor Cortes to the 60-day injured list.
•Placed INF/OF Jake Bauers on the 10-day injured list…— Yankees PR Dept. (@YankeesPR) July 7, 2023
There is no word yet on the severity of the injury to Jake Bauers. As for Cortes, this move to the 60-day Injured List was done to give the team an open spot for the returning Rodon. It was also done in order to show that the team will take things slowly with him, as he is available to return as of August 3.
Esteury Ruiz – OF Oakland Athletics
Esteury Ruiz has been placed on the 10-day IL retroactive to July 6 with a right shoulder subluxation.
— Martín Gallegos (@MartinJGallegos) July 7, 2023
There has been no word on how long this injury will keep Ruiz on the shelf.
Andrew McCutchen – OF Pittsburgh Pirates, Ke’Bryan Hayes – 3B Pittsburgh Pirates
We have made the following roster moves:
• Recalled RHP Cody Bolton from Triple-A Indianapolis.
• Ended INF/DH Ji Man Choi’s rehabilitation assignment and reinstated him to the active roster from the 60-day Injured List.
• Placed OF/DH Andrew McCutchen on the 10-day…
— Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) July 7, 2023
McCutchen landed awkwardly while trying to avoid a pitch on Thursday. There is no word on how long he will miss. As for Hayes, he apparently wasn’t fully healed when he returned on Thursday. He will go back on the Injured List with the same injury that he had previously.
Ha-Seong Kim – INF San Diego Padres
Ha-Seong Kim jammed a toe kicking something in frustration, Bob Melvin said. X-rays were negative.
— Dennis Lin (@dennistlin) July 8, 2023
Kim may miss a game or two with an injured toe, but he should be fine after the All-Star Break. Stay tuned.
Jordan Montgomery – SP St. Louis Cardinals
Jordan Montgomery left the game with a hamstring injury, according to the #STLCards He's being evaluated.
— Lynn Worthy (@LWorthySports) July 8, 2023
Montgomery landed awkwardly while throwing a pitch in his pouting last night. He was evaluated last night and will likely get evaluated today. There should be updates.
Tommy Edman – INF/OF St. Louis Cardinals
INF José Fermín has been recalled from Memphis (AAA).
INF/OF Tommy Edman (right wrist inflammation) has been placed on the 10-day IL.
Fermín will make his Major League debut with his first appearance and wear uniform no. 35. pic.twitter.com/hXyRbrGbQi
— St. Louis Cardinals (@Cardinals) July 7, 2023
Edman will miss the next ten days with wrist inflammation, though there hasn’t been any indication of additional time needed.
Tyler Glasnow – SP Tampa Bay Rays
#Rays Cash said Glasnow had cramping in both hands and legs, that at 88 pitches he was just about at his limit anyway so they took him out. Cash said Glasnow has had this before and it's not a dehydration issue but they can't figure out the cause.
— Marc Topkin (@TBTimes_Rays) July 8, 2023
The fact that this has happened before and that it’s not dehydration is a bit concerning. Hopefully, he and the team can get this under control for future outings.
Jeimer Candelario – 3B Washington Nationals
Abrams leads off for the first time this season, Candelario sits with a sore right knee after getting hit by a pitch yesterday.
— Mark Zuckerman (@MarkZuckerman) July 7, 2023
Candelario should be considered DTD while he rests and recovers.
