Here is the Fantrax Injury Report for Sunday, July 23, 2023. In today’s issue, we see two of the unluckiest players this week get hit by a pitch again. Both Kris Bryant and Adolis Garcia both got hit by a pitch on Wednesday then again yesterday. Also, Brandon Woodruff had a tremendous first rehab outing yesterday, giving hope to his fantasy owners. Finally, the Cardinals lost two players to injury yesterday, but both don’t look to be long-term whatsoever. All that and more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report
Gabriel Moreno – C Arziona Diamondbacks
Gabriel Moreno was scratched today due to left shoulder discomfort. It’s something he’s been dealing with the last few weeks and why his workload had decreased.
— Jody Jackson (@Jody_Jackson) July 22, 2023
Moreno has been suffering from this ailment for a while, and his performance on the field has deteriorated. It’s unclear if he will need extended time off to get himself right.
A.J. Minter – RP Atlanta Braves
A.J. Minter threw a bullpen session on Saturday. Brian Snitker said he'd probably be ready to throw a rehab inning before too long.
— Justin Toscano (@JustinCToscano) July 22, 2023
Minter last pitched on July 8 and may need the rest of July to rehab before returning to Atlanta.
Max Fried – SP Atlanta Braves
To be clear: Max Fried is headed for *at least* one more rehab start. Not saying it’ll be more than one, but it seems like his rehab assignment will continue.
— Justin Toscano (@JustinCToscano) July 22, 2023
This was a clarification from a previous tweet where Toscano did not explain the part of “at least”. As such, one more rehab outing might not be enough for Fried to return to the Braves.
Andrew Vaughn – 1B/OF Chicago White Sox
White Sox hoping Andrew Vaughn can return by Tuesday https://t.co/1yJv2MnMOQ
— Daryl Van Schouwen (@CST_soxvan) July 22, 2023
Vaughn has a bruise on his foot, and the hope is that it will be better healed in order to allow him to play. The important part here is that it looks like he won’t be going to the Injured List.
Kris Bryant – OF Colorado Rockies
#Rockies Kris Bryant left today's game vs. #Marlins after getting hit by a pitch in the finger. Bud Black said X-rays were negative. Bryant is day-to-day.
— Patrick Saunders (@psaundersdp) July 22, 2023
Bryant has now exited games twice this week because of being hit by a pitch. He escaped the last one without needing to go to the Injured List. The hope is that the outcome here is also the same.
CJ Cron – 1B Colorado Rockies
CJ Cron was scratched with lower back stiffness, he’s not been traded. Not seen as serious. Is seen as a trade candidate.
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) July 22, 2023
The hope here is that Cron will avoid the Injured List. Stay tuned for updates.
Michael Brantley – OF Houston Astros
Michael Brantley took part in early hitting just now, his first on-field hitting since before the All-Star Break.
— Matt Kawahara (@matthewkawahara) July 22, 2023
This is the third time this season that Brantley has progressed to this point. The previous two times, he got shut down due to continued soreness. Let’s hope that the third time is the charm.
Zach Neto – SS Los Angeles Angels
Zach Neto isn’t expected to play tomorrow, Nevin said. Expects to have him back Tuesday.
— Sam Blum (@SamBlum3) July 23, 2023
It looks like Neto won’t play today and will attempt to be back on Tuesday.
Anthony Rendon – 3B Los Angeles Angels
Anthony Rendon underwent an MRI exam that revealed a deep bone bruise in his shin. There’s bleeding in the bone, Nevin said. He said he’ll need to rest at two weeks. He was trying to ramp it up but has to shut it down.
— Rhett Bollinger (@RhettBollinger) July 22, 2023
Rendon will be shut down for at least two weeks, which could mean he won’t play at all until September.
Clayton Kershaw – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
Slight tweak of the plan, per Dave Roberts. Clayton Kershaw came out of his bullpen well, but will throw an “up-down” bullpen on Monday. Then he would face hitters. https://t.co/GNa4CusbVg
— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) July 22, 2023
The Dodgers continue to take things slowly with Kershaw, as they once again have their offseason plans in the forefront.
Brandon Woodruff – SP Milwaukee Brewers
Brandon Woodruff content!
His first rehab start is done.

Woodruff looked dominant in this outing, and his velocity seemed there for the most part. Of those 32 pitches thrown, 27 of them were thrown for strikes. Now, what matters most is how he feels after this start. He will need a few more starts before heading back to the Brewers. All that said, this was a very encouraging first step back on the mound.
Nolan Arenado – 3B St. Louis Cardinals
Nolan Arenado fouled a ball off his lower left leg earlier in the game, which is why Donovan hit for him in the ninth. Didn’t seem like much concern but it stiffened up during the delay.
— Jeff Jones (@jmjones) July 22, 2023
Arenado downplayed this injury and said it was because of the rain delay. Keep an eye on his status for today’s game, but it doesn’t seem to be a serious setback.
Willson Contreras – C St. Louis Cardinals
Willson Contreras exited with right hip tightness.
— Jeff Jones (@jmjones) July 22, 2023
Contreras himself said that he injured himself while trying to block a pitch early in the game. It doesn’t seem to be that serious, but he could miss a game or two just to be safe,
Adolis Garcia – OF Texas Rangers
X-rays on Adolis García's right hand were negative. He'll continue to be evaluated.
— kennedi landry (@kennlandry) July 22, 2023
Garcia is the second player to get hit by a pitch twice in one week. Luckily, Garcia’s X-rays came back negative as well, but his evaluation will continue. It looked much scarier than it was, but fingers are crossed that he will be okay.
Corey Seager – SS Texas Rangers
Additional Rangers roster moves for Saturday:
-SS Corey Seager placed on the 10-day Injured List (right thumb sprain)
-C Sam Huff recalled from Round Rock (AAA)— Texas Rangers PR (@TXRangersPR) July 22, 2023
The only real news is that Seager will need at least ten days to heal up. There was no word on if the team expects this to be a minimum stay on the Injured List.
Hyun-Jin Ryu – SP Toronto Blue Jays
Hyun Jin Ryu felt good after yesterday’s start in Triple-A and will join the team in LA on Monday.
The #BlueJays are still charting out some potential plans for when he’ll return to the rotation, but want to have Ryu there for a look in-person.
— Keegan Matheson (@KeeganMatheson) July 22, 2023
Ryu will join the team, but there is no word on his role with the team or when he will be a part of it. Keep that in mind for now, but the writing is on the wall for him to get some starts for the Jays.
