Here is the Fantrax Injury Report for Saturday, September 2, 2023. Inside today’s edition, a lot of Reds updates are examined. Hunter Greene is the latest to suffer from Covid-19 on the team and will miss some time. Also, Matt McLain is meeting with medical officials to get more clarity on when he could possibly return. Finally, Jonathan India continues to progress, but it’s a slow ascension back to where he should be. All that and more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report
Graham Ashcraft – SP Cincinnati Reds
One additional piece of bad news for the Reds: Ashcraft was dealing with a sore toe and left the game to get an MRI.
— Mark Sheldon (@m_sheldon) September 1, 2023
There were no details yet on the results of this MRI, but it obviously impacted his ability to perform. He exited after just five innings and 72 pitches. The team should provide updates sooner rather than later.
Joey Votto – 1B Cincinnati Reds, Nick Lodolo – SP Cincinnati Reds
David Bell with injury updates.
Justin Dunn will have shoulder surgery. Nick Lodolo is out for the year but no surgery. No baseball activities yet for Votto.
— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) September 1, 2023
We’re almost at the point where he can be “out for the season”, as we have entered the final month of the season. As for Lodolo, he is out for this season and should be ready for Spring Training. It’s good news that the injury will not require surgery in order to be fixed.
Jonathan India – 2B Cincinnati Reds
Continuing the running progression, and there are a few more steps after that.
— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) September 1, 2023
India still has yet to run at 100%, which makes it clearer that he may need a rehab assignment if and when he’s ready. There’s no guarantee that he will make it back this season.
Matt McLain – SS – Cincinnati Reds
He’s meeting with a doctor today, which will provide more info.
— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) September 1, 2023
McLain was previously diagnosed with an oblique injury and was without a timetable to return. The hope is that meeting with a doctor will provide clarity.
Hunter Greene – SP Cincinnati Reds
Reds’ Hunter Greene goes in COVID IL
Brett Kennedy recalled from Louisville.
Jake Fraley back from IL
Hunter Renfroe, Harrison Bader both officially added to roster.
— Gordon Wittenmyer (@GDubMLB) September 1, 2023
First, it was Ben Lively, and now Hunter Greene. Keep an eye on the situation here with the Reds as they could have others become ill in the near future.
Gavin Williams – SP Cleveland Guardians
Cleveland’s rotation plans:
Cal Quantrill, Logan Allen, Xzavion Curry this weekend against the Rays.
For the three-game showdown against the Twins next week:
Lucas Giolito
Tanner Bibee
Gavin Williams— Zack Meisel (@ZackMeisel) September 1, 2023
Great news for the Guardians and Williams, who will be returning next week.
Javier Baez – SS Detroit Tigers
Sounds like Javier Baez's playing time down the stretch is going to be more sporadic. He's still not feeling 100% and Hinch needs to find at-bats for Lipcius and others. Baez will be in lineup Saturday, off Sunday.
— Chris McCosky (@cmccosky) September 1, 2023
Baez may be a part-time player by season’s end.
Jose Altuve – 2B Houston Astros
Jose Altuve provides an update, later saying he’s going to wear a shin guard tomorrow pic.twitter.com/IjR6ixKWqW
— Brian McTaggart (@brianmctaggart) September 2, 2023
Altuve says that he has hit that exact spot approximately three times this past week, so it’s obviously hurting. He also mentioned elsewhere that he himself didn’t think he could have stayed in the game. It does sound like he will play in today’s game, which is good news for Houston.
Brady Singer – SP Kansas City Royals
We have made the following roster moves: pic.twitter.com/lHMtQNWMRT
— Kansas City Royals (@Royals) September 1, 2023
Singer was going to have his next turn in the rotation skipped due to arm fatigue and soreness. He will now miss the next few weeks while on the paternity list.
Byron Buxton – UT Minnesota Twins
Byron Buxton experienced soreness in the patella tendon of his right knee on Friday, and was removed from Saints' game after two at-bats as DH, a Twins spokesman says. Team will evaluate and update his condition on Saturday.
— Phil Miller (@MillerStrib) September 2, 2023
Uh oh, this isn’t good and puts a wrench in the plans of the Twins. Buxton’s attempt to play in the outfield may not work after all. While there will be an update later today, this unsurprising development might be the last straw in Minneosta’s desire to give Buxton a glove instead of a bat.
Gleyber Torres – 2B New York Yankees
Aaron Boone said Gleyber Torres’ back locked up around the time of batting practice. “So we’ll see what we have there.” #Yankees
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) September 2, 2023
The hope is that this is a minor issue and that Torres can return soon. We should know more about his condition after the team arrives at the ballpark.
J.D. Davis – 3B Sa Francisco Giants
J.D. Davis scratched with left hand soreness tonight. Schmitt in at third. #SFGiants
— Steven Rissotto (@StevenRissotto) September 2, 2023
Consider Davis DTD while he recovers.
Josh Jung – 3B Texas Rangers, Nathan Eovaldi – SP Texas Rangers
An injury update on Josh Jung and Nathan Eovaldi ⬇️

Jung apparently feels great, but the team doesn’t want to push things too quickly. They have targeted a 2-3 week window for his return, and don’t want to rush him back so as to cause significant injuries for down the road. As for Eovaldi, he had an up-and-down bullpen session which looked good, and they wanted to discuss things with him first. They didn’t eliminate the possibility that he might avoid a rehab appearance altogether, but the report was vague with regard to a timeline.
Danny Jansen – C Toronto Blue Jays
Danny Jansen has a fractured finger (middle finger, right hand). Tyler Heineman to join Jays. More tests coming
— Ben Nicholson-Smith (@bnicholsonsmith) September 2, 2023
Jansen will likely head to the Injured List at some point while he recovers.
Bo Bichette – SS Toronto Blue Jays
Bo Bichette did some running, hitting & fielding ground balls right at him. Hope is he’ll be back within minimum 10 days, manager John Schneider said
— Ben Nicholson-Smith (@bnicholsonsmith) September 1, 2023
Fingers crossed that Schneider is correct about Bichette.
