Here is the Fantrax Injury Report for Thursday, March 30, 2023.
The season is not here yet, but why not get a head start and jump in a Fantrax Classic Draft contest? Get a jump on the season with a Best Ball league or maybe a Draft and Hold. Or put some green on the line with a new season-long league to try and conquer. There’s no better time than now to get your baseball on!
Opening Day MLB Injury Report
James Paxton – SP Boston Red Sox
Paxton glides through smooth two innings with fastball at 94-96 mph. Will either pitch in Buffalo or Fort Myers Monday.
— Rob Bradford (@bradfo) March 29, 2023
Great news that Paxton was able to not only complete two innings, but also that his velocity was up as well. He should be a fixture in the Red Sox rotation, but the questions of when and for how long are valid.
Detroit Tigers Medical Update

— Evan Petzold (@EvanPetzold) March 29, 2023
Lots of news coming out of Detroit. Michael Lorenzen has resumed his work on the mound and will throw his second bullpen later today. He will begin the year on the Injured List, but will likely be in the rotation when he returns. Casey Mize is on the verge of completing his throwing progression later this week but is more of a dynasty option for 2024. Tarik Skubal, on the other hand, was placed on the 60-day Injured List and will likely miss half of the season.
Adrian Houser – SP Milwaukee Brewers, Aaron Ashby – SP/RP Milwaukee Brewers, Tyrone Taylor – OF Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers have made their injured list moves:
OF Tyrone Taylor (right elbow) to the 10-day injured list, retroactive to 3/27.
LHP Aaron Ashby (left labrum), RHP Adrian Houser (right groin) and LHP Justin Wilson (left elbow) to the 15-day injured list, retroactive to 3/27.
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) March 29, 2023
The Brewers were one of the few teams to make their Injury List designations ahead of their first game later today. Taylor is expected to miss at least six weeks with his elbow injury. Ashby is on a similar timetable, but since he is a pitcher. His timeline could be vaguer due to the possibility of a setback. Houser’s groin injury isn’t thought to be overly serious, so a minimum stay on the Injured List is the hope.
Royce Lewis – SS Minnesota Twins
Royce Lewis is taking live at-bats in Florida, and he'll soon progress to baserunning. The #MNTwins are potentially looking at getting him into game activity in mid-April.
That takes him into another lengthy buildup of game play until they start looking at a rehab assignment.
— Do-Hyoung Park (@dohyoungpark) March 29, 2023
Fantastic news all around here. Both Lewis and the Twins have (unfortunately) done this before, so hopefully, they learn from any mistakes. The anticipation is that he will return before the All-Star Break.
Luis Severino – SP New York Yankees, Carlos Rodon – SP New York Yankees, Frankie Montas – SP New York Yankees
The news of Severino is somewhat encouraging. Not only did he travel with the team, but he is expected to miss only a handful of starts. Still, anything can happen there. Rodon staying behind in Tampa takes some of the air out of his “comeback mid-April” attempt. Still, anything is possible, but owners shouldn’t hold their breath. Montas won’t throw for at least another month and may miss the entire season.
Rhys Hoskins – 1B Philadelphia Phillies
Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins will undergo left ACL reconstruction surgery on Thursday, 3/30 in Fort Worth, TX preformed by Dr. Steve Singleton.
— Philadelphia Phillies (@Phillies) March 28, 2023
Hoskins was officially placed on the 60-day Injured List ahead of his scheduled surgery.
JT Brubaker – SP Pittsburgh Pirates
Derek Shelton confirms the obvious development that JT Brubaker will open the season on the IL. Elbow inflammation. He’s not here. No other real update on that front.
— Dejan Kovacevic (@Dejan_Kovacevic) March 29, 2023
Brubaker was having a fantastic Spring, but that momentum has been derailed. No word yet on the severity of this injury, but further testing should change that.
Juan Soto – OF San Diego Padres

Fantasy owners and fans everywhere: Rejoice!
Paul DeJong – SS St. Louis Cardinals
#STLCards SS Paul DeJong (low back pain) took some BP swings today, but he has yet to field ground balls, manager Oli Marmol said. He is still doing his work in Jupiter, Fla., and isn’t expected to attend tomorrow’s Opening Day ceremonies.
— John Denton (@JohnDenton555) March 29, 2023
DeJong suffered lower back pain weeks ago and has yet to resume much of any baseball activities. The ripple effect has Tommy Edman playing shortstop and Brendan Donovan at second base.
Adam Wainwright – SP St. Louis Cardinals
#STLCards manager Oli Marmol said Adam Wainwright (groin strain) has started throwing at 120 feet to keep his arm in shape while rehabilitating his groin/adductor.
Wainwright, who was originally scheduled to make his 7th Opening Day start, will attend tomorrow’s ceremonies.
— John Denton (@JohnDenton555) March 29, 2023
Wainwright’s velocity was down this Spring, so there are some concerns already with his arm. The good news is that he is working on keeping his arm fresh during a time when he’s healing other body parts. There is no ETA just yet.
Tyler Glasnow – SP Tampa Bay Rays
To get down to 26-man opening day roster, #Rays will re-assign the remaining non-roster players to minors and place three rostered players on the 15-day IL:
RHPs Shawn Armstrong, Shane Baz, Tyler Glasnow,— Marc Topkin (@TBTimes_Rays) March 29, 2023
The Rays make it official, as Glasnow starts the year on the Injured List. The hope is that he will miss approximately one month and return. That said, anything is possible.
Glenn Otto – SP/RP Texas Rangers, Jake Odorizzi – SP/RP Texas Rangers
Delete/repost because I got updated info:
– Rangers bullpen will include Dane Dunning, Cole Ragans, and Ian Kennedy. Travis Jankowski has also made the team.
– To make room on the 40-man roster, Glenn Otto and Jake Odorizzi will start the season on the 60-day IL.
— Levi Weaver (@ThreeTwoEephus) March 29, 2023
Both pitchers are expected to miss significant time here due to different injuries: Otto has an injured lat while Odorizzi has arm fatigue. Both pitchers will be needed for bullpen depth as it is an area of need for the team.
Leody Taveras – OF Texas Rangers
Bruce Bochy confirms: Leody Taveras will open season on IL
— Evan Grant (@Evan_P_Grant) March 28, 2023
As expected, Taveras will miss time to start the season due to his oblique. In the meantime, Ezequiel Duran and Bubba Thompson will take over in the outfield.
