Though there have already been six teams who have had a bye week thus far, Week 7 feels like the first one where fantasy owners will begin to feel the bye week crunch. This year’s highest year-to-date scorers at both running back (Christian McCaffrey) and wide receiver (Chris Godwin) will have the week off. Nick Chubb, James Conner, and Mike Evans are also top-12 at their respective positions on the season. They will all be out of action this week. As will Jameis Winston, who is somehow the overall QB10 heading into Week 7 despite a league-high 11 turnovers. Fantasy teams will have their depth tested, which will be a common theme over the next six weeks. Let’s get right into the Week 7 rankings and discuss a few of the key storylines heading into the week.

Week 7 Rankings Breakdown
No to Mahomes?
Reigning league MVP Patrick Mahomes has finished three consecutive weeks as the QB11. Experts will scream “regression”, but an ankle injury and Kansas City’s inability to contain the run seem to be the main culprits. Mahomes has still averaged over 300 passing yards per game during his mini down stretch, so owners should not panic. Still, Week 7 will be one to keep a close eye on Mahomes. He must deal with a short week and a trip to Denver to face the Broncos. Denver can get after the quarterback at times, as evidenced by their seven sacks during last week’s shutout victory. The Broncos have allowed just four passing touchdowns all season long. They also have a running game that can keep the Chiefs offense off the field. If there was ever a week to fade Mahomes, this feels like it could be it.
Chargers Looking for a Spark
Not only are two of this year’s top four running backs on a bye, but Austin Ekeler (this year’s RB3 in PPR formats) is officially no longer an elite fantasy option. Melvin Gordon’s presence has predictably sapped most of Ekeler’s value. Even with the Chargers playing from behind last Sunday night, Ekeler managed just eight touches for 28 yards. The only saving grace to this point has been that Gordon has not produced much, either. Gordon has just 49 rushing yards on 20 carries since his return to action. Things do not figure to get better for either back in a matchup in Tennessee. The Titans feature two of the league’s toughest run stuffers in Jurrell Casey and DaQuan Jones. Both are outside the top 20 in my Week 7 rankings and would be better suited as low-end RB2/Flex options.
Gallup to Run Free
Michael Gallup disappointed in last week’s loss to the New York Jets. He will have a chance to redeem himself in another plum matchup when Dallas hosts the Eagles. We saw Stefon Diggs emerge from a game with the Eagles as last week’s overall WR1. Gallup has a lot of similar physical tools as Diggs, and they line up in generally the same position on the field. Gallup’s biggest bugaboo has been drops, as he has five drops in two games since returning from a knee injury. Perhaps he is overcompensating or trying to do too much. Either way, he must be trotted out against an Eagles secondary that has routinely been lit up this season. Philadelphia has allowed seven top-13 weekly finishes to opposing wide receivers in six games. Gallup can add to that total regardless of the status of Amari Cooper, who is dealing with a quad injury.
