Here is the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Tuesday, May 7, 2024. In today’s edition, the Cubs get some great news on Cody Bellinger, the Guardians get some clarity on Steven Kwan and the Rockies get some progress on Nolan Jones. All of that and more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report for Tuesday, May 7, 2024.
Seiya Suzuki – OF Chicago Cubs (oblique), Cody Bellinger – OF Chicago Cubs (ribs)
Seiya Suzuki will need a rehab assignment before returning but Counsell wanted to see how he got through today before next steps are outlined.
Cody Bellinger, though, won’t need one & there’s a chance he’s back in Cubs lineup before they hit the road this weekend, Counsell said.

This is the first real update that we have had on Suzuki in a while, and knowing that he will need an assignment helps evaluate his ETA. As for Bellinger, that’s great news, so be prepared.
Steven Kwan – OF Cleveland Guardians (hamstring)
Steven Kwan has an acute left hamstring strain and is expected to miss four weeks.
— Zack Meisel (@ZackMeisel) May 6, 2024
Kwan’s diagnosis was finally revealed, and it appears that he will miss more than the ten-day minimum here. The good news is that he should be back shortly afterward with the hope that he can continue his hot start. Expect some downtime while he recovers and a rehab assignment once he’s just about ready to return.
Blake Snell – SP San Francisco Giants (thigh)
All went well in Blake Snell’s bullpen over the weekend and he will throw three innings to hitters on Tuesday, Melvin said. Next steps after that are TBD. He’s eligible to come off the IL on May 8.
— Shayna Rubin (@ShaynaRubin) May 6, 2024
Snell continues to progress and will do so by throwing to live batters today. If all goes well, he may just come off the Injured List without a rehab assignment. That said, given that he missed Spring Training, the team may be wise to let him throw.
Nathan Eovaldi – SP Texas Rangers (groin)
Bruce Bochy said Nathan Eovaldi does *not* have a sports hernia, and they think he’ll be able to return soon around the time his IL stint is up.
— Shawn McFarland (@McFarland_Shawn) May 7, 2024
The initial worry here was that he would miss significant time with a sports hernia. Since that is not the case, his time away from the team should be cut down immensely. While Eovaldi does have a long(er) history of injuries, the team doesn’t expect him to miss much more than the fifteen-game minimum. Stay tuned.
Byron Buxton – OF Minnesota Twins (knee)
Buxton has essentially given way here to the fact that his body can’t hold up anymore. Whether he means more with this current injury or with future ones, he has not topped 140 games played since 2017. Concerning his current injury, Buxton will continue to manage it by listening to his body and not pushing through the pain. That could mean extended time away, as this makes it quite vague.
Christian Yelich – OF Milwaukee Brewers (back)
Christian Yelich is hitting on the field for the first time since his back injury. Pat Murphy said that’s likely the final step to get him back in the lineup. pic.twitter.com/3mn1r2II1Q
— Sophia Minnaert (@SophiaMinnaert) May 6, 2024
Yelich said that he felt better recently, and the work that he put in on the field shows it. While it’s good to see that he is in the final stage of his recovery, it remains to be seen if he will have a rehab assignment. The guess would be no, but only the Brewers’ Brass will know that answer.
Giovanny Gallegos – RP St. Louis Cardinals (shoulder), Tommy Edman – 2B/SS/OF St. Louis Cardinals (wrist)
In corresponding moves:
-RHP Giovanny Gallegos has been placed on the 15-day IL (right shoulder impingement)
-INF/OF Tommy Edman has been transferred to the 60-day IL
— St. Louis Cardinals (@Cardinals) May 6, 2024
Gallegos heads to the Injured List for the next two weeks after having failed to record at least one out in his last two appearances. Meanwhile, Edman continues to work on swinging a bat but he has yet been cleared to do much more than that. He cannot return until at least May 24, and there is no guarantee that he makes it back by then.
Nolan Jones – OF Colorado Rockies (back)
This was the first real activity that Jones has done since being shut down indefinitely over a week ago. It remains to be seen what’s next for him, but it all depends on how his body responds. The team seems okay to be taking things slowly here.
Francisco Alvarez – C New York Mets (thumb)
Francisco Alvarez (recovery from left thumb surgery) had his stitches removed today. He's traveling with the team so he can continue taking part in pregame pitcher/catcher meetings.
Alvarez is two weeks into a roughly eight-week rehab process.
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) May 6, 2024
It’s good to see that Alvarez is on the right track for a return. He’s exactly where he should be.
Braxton Garrett – SP Miami Marlins (shoulder)
With a gem in the FCL today, #Marlins' Braxton Garrett has been dominant in his last two rehab starts:

It remains to be seen what’s next for Garrett, but he could be back with the Marlins on the weekend.
