Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Friday, May 17, 2024. In today’s edition, the Dodgers got some bad news regarding Emmet Sheehan, the Phillies may have to go back to the Turnbull turnpike after Taijuan Walker got injured, and Kodai Senga got some really positive news on his recovery. All of that and more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report for Friday, May 17, 2024.
Taijuan Walker – SP Philadelphia Phillies (toe)
Taijuan Walker’s toe is not broken. Phillies aren’t sure about his next start; they’ll see how he feels tomorrow. Walker was encouraged.

Walker got himself hit by a comebacker midway through his start on Thursday, and he was forced to leave the game early. He went in for X-rays and the results were listed above. There is still a chance that he will miss his next start or two with some time on the Injured List. Keep Spencer Turnbull in your back pocket as he could find his way back into the team’s rotation.
Emmet Sheehan – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (elbow)
Los Angeles Dodger RHP Emmet Sheehan had season-ending right elbow UCL surgery. Dr. Neal ElAttrache performed a successful surgery in L.A. yesterday.
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) May 16, 2024
Absolutely brutal news here for both Sheehan and the Dodgers. Sheehan has been on the Injured List all season long with a forearm strain and experienced setbacks while there. He will likely not be pitching until the 2026 season, as this will push back any progress he was set to have made for years.
J.P. Crawford – SS Seattle Mariners (hand, oblique)
JP Crawford didn’t fly to Baltimore today. His hand is still sore and a little swollen after getting hit by a pitch. The Mariners aren’t certain when he will join the team
— Ryan Divish (@RyanDivish) May 16, 2024
Crawford was likely one game away from returning from an oblique injury but got hit in the hand by a pitch in that final game. Now, with a diagnosis unclear, he may miss extended time while recovering from his hand injury. There should be more details to follow, but this is an unfortunate series of events.
Kodai Senga – SP New York Mets (shoulder)
David Stearns says Kodai Senga is getting closer to a return and being sent on a rehab assignment:

Great news here as Senga has taken yet another step forward with his recovery. He had been dealing with mechanical issues as of late, but those concerns are in the past. Now he seems destined for a rehab assignment to start anytime, though be warned that it will be a long one. Regardless of timing, this is all trending in the right direction for him and the Mets.
Branon Nimmo – OF New York Mets (illness)
Nimmo is dealing with a stomach bug.
— Mike Puma (@NYPost_Mets) May 16, 2024
Consider Nimmo DTD, but also be aware that there have been reports of this bug making its way through the clubhouse. Other Mets players may be sick in the coming days.
Byron Buxton – OF Minnesota Twins (knee)
After the Castro adventure in CF last night, look forward to seeing Byron Buxton back out there this weekend in Cleveland. He'll play for the Saints tonight, again. If all goes well, can see Buck back with #MNTwins on Sat.
— Darren Wolfson (@DWolfsonKSTP) May 16, 2024
Buxton just began his rehab on Wednesday but seems to be on track for a quick return to the Twins. If he has indeed played his final rehab game, he finishes 0-for-6 with three strikeouts and one run batted in, capping off an uneventful two-day sprint.
Sean Murphy – C Atlanta Braves (oblique)
Acuña is just getting a day off. Murphy will begin a rehab assignment next week
— Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) May 15, 2024
This is a welcome sight for fantasy owners, as Murphy has been absent since Opening Day with this injury. It will likely be a lengthy rehab assignment given that he hasn’t played in such a long time.
Nico Hoerner – 2B Chicago Cubs (hamstring)
Nico Hoerner took BP and went through some drills with Cubs trainers today.
Here’s Craig Counsell with an update on Hoerner’s status ⬇️ pic.twitter.com/2s5rrWYfEj
— Ryan Herrera (@ryan_a_herrera) May 16, 2024
Hoerner went through a more vigorous pre-game warmup yesterday with running and agility drills. This is a stark difference from a day prior where Counsell said that he was instructed to do nothing at all. The team is taking things day-by-day and coming together through feedback from the trainers and the player himself. He has missed three days in a row now.
