MLB Injury Report: deGrom Dominating in Rehab!

Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Monday, September 2, 2024. In today’s edition, Kyle Tucker is on the verge of finally returning, Fernando Tatis might not need a rehab assignment, and the Arizona Diamondbacks may get some key reinforcements back soon. All of this and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report

Kyle Tucker – OF Houston Astros (shin)

Late last week, Tucker was seen sprinting in the field, and a lot has happened since then. He’s been running the bases incredibly well, utilizing his leg and ankle muscles to pivot, which is a key component here post-shin repair. He’s also had very successful batting practice sessions where he was able to hit monstrous moonshots while showing off his power. Now, there are reports of him not only doing very well but that he is very close to a return. It looks like a rehab assignment is off the table here, as he will get his groove back on the fly with the team. Houston all of a sudden has a six-game lead in the division and has done this without having one of the best hitters in baseball. It would appear that they feel ready enough to have him get back into his mid-season form with the team. For fantasy purposes, he should not only be active in your weekly leagues, he should also be starting.

Alex Bregman – 3B Houston Astros (elbow)

While it would appear that Bregman’s absence is just about over, it’s worth noting that he has missed time yet again because of it. Since games played on August 16, he has missed seven of the team’s seventeen games for an injury that might return in the future as it did here. Fantasy owners may want to look ahead in the schedule and be sure that they have a viable third baseman on their bench just in case this injury pops up again down the stretch.

Tyler Glasnow – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (elbow)

Manager Dave Roberts also said that the best-case scenario for Glasnow would be for him to return in mid-September and give himself around three starts to help prepare him for the postseason. While the words “best-case” don’t always come to fruition, it’s worth noting that he has begun throwing again and felt good afterward. That was a big hurdle for him when he was shut down, but he will need to do more than play catch soon.

Jacob deGrom – SP Texas Rangers (elbow)

This was deGrom’s longest rehab outing to date, throwing 43 pitches over an efficient 2.2 innings of work. Through three outings now, he has given up just one run over 6.2 innings pitched and compiled ten strikeouts. He is slated to throw at least one more time before returning to the Rangers, but it’s unclear how many pitches he will throw, as his current rate won’t be enough for a traditional starter’s workload.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. – OF Arizona Diamondbacks (calf)

As if the team needed more to deal with, Gurriel left yesterday’s game with an injury. The hope is that his imaging will come back clean having him ready to return within a matter of days. Consider him day-to-day until we hear otherwise.

Arizona Diamondbacks – Team Update

This is a big update for some important players on the Diamondbacks. First, Christian Walker (oblique) appears to be on the verge of returning to the team. He’s been doing everything necessary to make a comeback even without a rehab assignment. On top of what was mentioned here, he also took some grounders and did some fielding work. Consider his likelihood of a return high and possibly this week. As for Ketel Marte (ankle), he’s a step behind the aforementioned Walker in his progress, as he has yet to do some running. Finally, Gabriel Moreno (abductor strain) continues to do well without any setbacks, but his return isn’t expected for weeks. That being said, he is still on track to return by the end of the season.

Liam Hendriks – RP Boston Red Sox (elbow)

The biggest piece of news from this important 45-second clip is the plan for Hendriks to be able to throw three out of four days before getting called up. As it stands, he has yet to pitch on back-to-back days and has only pitched on one day’s rest once. He has a ways to go, and from the sounds of it, he won’t be closing games for the team either, but will instead be in low-leverage situations.

Alec Bohm – 3B Philadelphia Phillies (hand)

Bohm has missed the last three games with a hand injury but appears close to returning to the lineup. We should know more after today’s day off, but things are looking good here.

Fernando Tatis Jr. – OF San Diego Padres (thigh)

This is potentially great news for both the Padres and fantasy owners. He has accelerated his ramp-up as of late by doing a lot of on-field work and he now appears almost ready to return. While nothing appears to be imminent, he is closer to being back on the field and helping the Padres move toward a playoff spot. His ability to successfully sprint, take live-at bats, and ramp up the intensity of his workouts are all signs that he is most definitely improving.

Ha-Seong Kim – INF San Diego Padres (shoulder)

This is pretty good news for Kim, though he is still missing out on an important hurdle here. Until he starts throwing for longer distances, chances are that he won’t be returning anytime soon. Once that feat is accomplished, fantasy owners can expect some accelerated progress to the point of possibly returning to the team shortly afterward. There should be more details on his status following the weekend.
