MLB Injury Report: Gabriel Moreno goes down

Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Tuesday, August 6, 2024. In today’s edition, Gabriel Moreno might be out for a while, Mason Miller might be returning soon, and Tanner Bibee takes a big step forward in his recovery. All of that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report

Gabriel Moreno – C Arizona Diamondbacks (groin)

Moreno limped off the field on Monday after running toward first base and feeling a sharp pain. He will be examined today to determine the severity of the issue, but chances are that he will be placed on the Injured List. It’s unclear what the next step is for the team, but they may call up one of their prospects to take his spot on the roster. Stay tuned.

Mason Miller – RP Oakland Athletics (hand)

Miller throwing a live bullpen yesterday was a great sign of health and healing. It’s important to remember that the injury sustained is to his non-throwing hand, so the pain tolerance has to deal with catching a baseball. His arm has remained fresh throughout this ordeal and he looks to be on track to return very soon.

Houston Astros – Team Update

The information here on Kyle Tucker (shin) is very vague, as the word stuff could mean a lot of things. It’s important to note that he had been limited in his abilities on the field in recent days as the team had said he wasn’t progressing the way that they would have liked. If his day consisted of a lot of activities, perhaps they were more happy with what he was doing. Again, though, this is just another example of how difficult a situation this is to comprehend and how indeterminate his future is. As for Luis Garcia (elbow), his on-again-off-again roller coaster-ride recovery makes him a not-so-sexy choice for fantasy purposes in 2025.

Cleveland Guardians – Team Update

Big and important update here on the Guardians. First, Tanner Bibee (shoulder) playing catch is a good sign that he is feeling better. Whether or not he returns soon remains to be seen, but there have been murmurs of him pitching this weekend for the Guardians, but time will tell if that happens. As for Alex Cobb (hip), he is on track to start for Cleveland this weekend at the Twins, though a specific date has not yet been set. He successfully made it through a rehab assignment for his new team and looks to be just about ready. Meanwhile, Matthew Boyd (elbow) will make his fifth rehab start tomorrow and likely be an option for the big league club shortly afterward. Finally, Sam Hentges (shoulder) could be yet another weapon in this vaunted Guardians bullpen within a week.

Miami Marlins – Team Update

A lot to unpack here. For fantasy purposes, Braxton Garrett (forearm) continues to intensify his workouts to possibly pitch again this season. He is still weeks away from returning, if at all. As for Jesus Luzardo (back), with six more weeks of being shut down, he is not someone worth holding onto in redraft leagues, though he is a nice buy-low option in dynasty leagues. Meanwhile, Sixto Sanchez (shoulder) might be a bullpen option for the team down the stretch, though his value is limited. Finally, it is unclear as to what value, if any, Josh Simpson (elbow) will have down the stretch here for the Marlins, but he may get a chance.

Chicago Cubs – Team Update

Seiya Suzuki (neck) got the day off yesterday to help deal with some minor neck issues. He is expected back in the lineup today, but time will tell if that’s the case. Meanwhile, Cody Bellinger (finger) will not play the field, and this situation is something to monitor going forward. While his hitting hasn’t suffered too much, it’s interesting to note that he still suffers from some pain. We shall see if this does affect his swing down the stretch.

Tyler O’Neill – OF Boston Red Sox (illness)

O’Neill has missed three games now with an illness, and it looks as if that number will rise to at least four with Tuesday’s absence. The hope and belief is that he will be back on Wednesday.

Ranger Suarez – SP Philadelphia Phillies (back)

This was a nice step forward for Suarez, but he still needs to face live batters before a return is even considered. After hopefully feeling good a day later, he just might be cleared to do so shortly. One day at a time.

Brooks Lee – SS Minnesota Twins (shoulder)

The injury here sounds minor and nothing to worry about. If he sits out today for the same reason, then the level of panic should rise, but for now, consider him DTD with the likelihood of returning to be high.
