MLB Injury Report: Good News on Tatis, No News on Tucker

Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Friday, July 19, 2024. In today’s edition, Fernando Tatis Jr. had a very positive update, Michael Harris III has some potentially good news and Kyle Tucker’s non-news is important news for his future. All of that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report for Friday, July 19, 2024.

Fernando Tatis Jr. – OF San Diego Padres (quad)

This was the best news possible from the awaited MRI that was taking place. We now know that there has been enough healing taking place and that he can increase the intensity of basic baseball functions. The fact that he is recovering from a stress fracture still means that the team must be cautious with him regarding his return because doing too much too soon can cause a crack or breakage in his bones. Once he is able to perform these baseball activities consistently without any issues, we should have a firm timeline. For now, just celebrate the fact that it hasn’t gotten any worse.

Michael Harris III – OF Atlanta Braves (hamstring)

This was the first real indication of where Harris is at physically. We had seen that he was swinging a bat and had resumed running, but otherwise, it felt like we were at a standstill with no progress. The team has been very hush about where he is at, but with a return happening in the next two to three weeks, it’s a good sign. All that being said, he has yet to begin a rehab assignment, so until that happens, anything is possible.

Boston Red Sox – Team Update

Triston Casas (ribs) has been trending in the right direction since he began swinging a bat and taking small tosses. The next logical step would be for him to start a rehab assignment, as hinted here. While nothing has been officially announced, he does have just over a week to fulfill this prediction. One would have to believe that whenever the rehab assignment does begin, it will be a long one to ensure that everything is physically fine within him. As for Vaughn Grissom (hamstring), he looks ready to begin a rehab assignment in the coming weeks. It would be quite possible for both of these players to begin at the same time.

Jesus Luzardo – SP Miami Marlins (lumbar stress reaction)

Luzardo doing some physical activity like this is a good sign, it’s important to note that he has yet to resume throwing. Until; that happens, he is a ways away from returning….if he even does return at all this season.

Abner Uribe – RP Milwaukee Brewers (knee)

This ends Uribe’s 2024 season on such a down note. He came into the year as a contender for saves, and inconsistency plus injuries will be what’s remembered for most. The hope is that he can return next year and be the dominant setup man he was last season.

Kyle Tucker – OF Houston Astros (shin)

Not the most ideal of situations here. The hope was that over the break we would find out that Tucker had been improving since he has been absent for so long with what has been diagnosed as a deep bone bruise. Instead, he remains without a timetable for a return. I went over in more detail all of my ideas for his return here, but essentially it reveals that there is a possibility of him missing the next month or so, and that’s assuming there are no setbacks in any step of the progress. Not ideal.

Luis Garcia – SP Houston Astros (elbow)

Garcia was pulled from his last rehab assignment earlier this month for renewed soreness and an inability to recover as well as he should. He is back to throwing from 75 feet and anticipating a return to the mound, so the hope is that he has cleared that hurdle. That said, there’s no guarantee that he can continue to push forward.
