MLB Injury Report: Goodbye Christian Yelich

Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Friday, August 16, 2024. In today’s edition, Christian Yelich opts for season-ending surgery. Also, Byron Buxton needs additional time to heal, Joe Ryan needs a second opinion, and Carlos Correa needs better shoes. All of that and more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report

Christian Yelich – OF Milwaukee Brewers (back)

This is something that has plagued Yelich throughout his career, and this season is no different. In a touching video statement, you can see the pain and disappointment in his eyes. There is no word on if this will permanently fix the problem, but the hope is that with any surgery, it will do enough good to dismantle the bad. Here’s hoping that one of the game’s best can finally play pain-free in 2025.

Byron Buxton – OF Minnesota Twins (hip)

Despite having a clean MRI returned by the team officials, Buxton will need at least ten days to allow the pain in his hip to hopefully dissipate. Of note, Dan said in a later post that this is the 20th trip to the Injured List in the career of one Byron Buxton, which is an incredible number for all the wrong reasons. Here’s hoping that he can return before September.

Carlos Correa – SS Minnesota Twins (foot)

Interesting development here for Correa, who is waiting for the proper footwear to be activated and brought back to the Twins’ lineup. The biggest hurdle here is allegedly that Nike needs to have the right show for him since he is a Nike-sponsored player. Whether or not this is the final hurdle remains to be seen, but if this is his biggest hold-up, he should be close to returning nonetheless. Stay tuned.

Joe Ryan – SP Minnesota Twins (shoulder)

According to this, Ryan feels more prepared than the team does to have him out there pitching. It seems that they’re both at an impasse, and the second opinion will likely decide which path to take regarding how and when he returns. Stay tuned for updates in the coming days.

Bo Bichette – SS Toronto Blue Jays (calf)

Bichette seems to be on the right path for a return, as he has resumed baseball activities. While the team says they would love having him back, his health is more important for their 2025 push than now, as they are all but out of the playoffs. As such, they may not want to rush him back and see what they have with the talent they have currently. That being said, a mid-September return could still happen.

Jorge Soler – OF Atlanta Braves (hamstring)

Soler was diagnosed with a mild hamstring strain that will cost him a few days. That said, a trip to the Injured List isn’t necessary and the plan is for him to return this weekend.

Texas Rangers – Team Update

Good news here on both accounts. Nathan Eovaldi (oblique) looks to be returning this weekend, though his start is something to watch because of how finicky oblique injuries can be. As for Max Scherzer (shoulder), it would appear that the medicine has already done its thing, as a planned bullpen today is a quick turnaround for him. If all goes well with that, he may be ready to return to the mound and pitch for the Rangers in some capacity soon enough.

Ranger Suarez – SP Philadelphia Phillies (back)

This could move his potential return date up a day or so, making him a possible candidate for a return next weekend, but on the earlier stages of his estimated 23rd – 25th date to pitch.

Justin Verlander – SP Houston Astros (neck)

It remains to be seen if this one outing was enough for Verlander to return to the Astros’ rotation. However, regardless of where he pitches next, this was a fine outing where he showed velocity, command, and control of the strike zone. A dominant performance where he looked comfortable, we could see him back in Houston shortly.

Brandon Nimmo – OF New York Mets (flu)

Consider Nimmo DTD for now until we’re told otherwise.

Mookie Betts – INF/OF Los Angeles Dodgers

This is for anyone worried about Betts missing yesterday’s game. He is fine moving forward and was given a day off as a way to ease him back into the grind of playing.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (shoulder)

The biggest takeaway here is what was stated by Nelson more than once: cautious optimism. They hope to get him back in their rotation by mid-September but keep in mind that this team is very playoff-oriented in everything that they do. They will ease him back in to ensure that he feels comfortable for the playoffs. That could mean some struggles or shorter outings if necessary. Fantasy-wise, he remains a tepid option down the stretch because it will be about him feeling ready for the postseason.
