Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Monday, August 12, 2024. In today’s edition, Mookie Betts makes his triumphant return to the Dodgers, the Diamondbacks avoid a major catastrophe with Ketel Marte and Zac Gallen, and fantasy owners have tough decisions to make on Joe Ryan and Grayson Rodriguez. Enjoy that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report
Grayson Rodriguez – SP Baltimore Orioles (shoulder)
The overall news here, while disheartening, is good, given that the team thought Rodriguez would miss the remainder of the season with this injury. That being said, from a fantasy perspective, he still doesn’t offer much more than a handful of starts if all goes well. In redraft leagues, it might be time to drop him and roster someone who will give you production.
Felix Bautista – RP Baltimore Orioles (elbow)
Félix Bautista (Tommy John) will throw off a full mound next week, per #Orioles GM Mike Elias, who also ruled out any possibility of an October return for the All-Star closer.
The O’s plan on Bautista being back Spring Training 2025.
— Jake Rill (@JakeDRill) August 10, 2024
Bautista will not pitch at all this year, either in the regular season or in the playoffs. The team remains committed to ensuring that he comes back next season as healthy and rested as possible. He is a fantastic buy-low player in keeper and dynasty leagues.
Mookie Betts – INF/OF Los Angeles Dodgers (hand)
Betts is scheduled to be activated as early as today and play in right field upon his return. Be prepared.
Walker Buehler – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (hip)
Yoshinobu Yamamoto – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (tricep)
Yoshinobu Yamamoto will throw another bullpen session on Tuesday then join #Dodgers in St. Louis next week and throw live BP to hitters during the weekend series.
— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) August 10, 2024
Yamamoto will hopefully advance to live batters within the next week, but after that it gets interesting. He should eventually progress toward a rehab assignment, as Plunkett also said in a later post that he expects the first-year pitcher to return in the middle of September.
River Ryan – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (elbow)

An unfortunate end to a promising season. Stay tuned for specifics on the extent of the injury and the ways in which the recovery will happen.
Los Angeles Dodgers – Team Update
Andrew Friedman #Dodgers Prez just told us that he expects both Tommy Edman and Max Muncy to be reinstated from the IL during their next homestand which begins a week from Monday
— Jim Bowden⚾️ (@JimBowdenGM) August 11, 2024
Tommy Edman (wrist) will be aiming for a week from now to make his 2024 debut, after a long, tumultuous season of injuries and setbacks. The team says that he will play in center field throughout his rehab assignment as well as places in the infield. Chances are that he will be the guy who gives others a break for the day. Either way, he should find his way into the Dodgers’ lineup on a daily basis. As for Max Muncy (oblique), he has flip-flopped between third base and designated hitter in his brief time on his rehab assignment, but the belief is that he will be inserted back into the lineup at the hot corner upon his return.
Kyle Tucker – OF Houston Astros (shin)
Kyle Tucker will meet the Astros in Tampa. Joe Espada said he thinks Tucker is "getting close" to running bases.
— Matt Kawahara (@matthewkawahara) August 11, 2024
If and when Tucker runs the bases, this would be a BIG step forward in his recovery. Tucker has been away from the team, and updates have been sent to the Astros through videos and ongoing verbal communication. By traveling and meeting with the team, they must think that he’s evolved into someone capable of doing more than he does. There have been varying reports of him doing various outfield activities alongside being limited. We may get a bigger and better idea of where he’s at tomorrow.
Jared Jones – SP Pittsburgh Pirates (lat)
Jones continues to progress forward at a steady and healthy pace. While the pitch count here is not quite high enough, he is moving along nicely and will likely need at least one more appearance before returning. There is a good chance that he will be activated within the next week.
Max Scherzer – SP Tex as Rangers (shoulder)
Scherzer will be evaluated, and the hope is that a plan will be put in place to attack what’s happening right now, as he hasn’t been able to get himself right. That being said, there’s a chance too that his age-40 body just can’t handle the rigors of starting every fifth day.
Nathan Eovaldi – SP Texas Rangers (side)
Eovaldi is one of those pitchers who is good when he’s healthy, but the timing of that health is sparse. Of note, the team doesn’t believe that a trip to the Injured List is warranted just yet.
Arizona Diamondbacks – Team Update
D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said his concern level is minimal for both Zac Gallen and Ketel Marte. pic.twitter.com/4Z75Sr0jui
— Arizona Sports (@AZSports) August 11, 2024
There’s a good chance that the Diamondbacks dodged a major bullet here in both regards. Ketel Marte (ankle) has an ankle contusion after a nasty slide on Saturday. The team deemed it unnecessary to seek any imaging or x-rays, and as such, he is listed as DTD until otherwise noted. Meanwhile, Zac Gallen (cramps) was lifted early because of general body soreness and nothing else. As such, he isn’t expected to miss much, if any time. Needless to say, losing either of these players would have been a big loss for Arizona.
Joe Ryan – SP Minnesota Twins (shoulder)
Joe Ryan may not pitch again this season, but if he does, it may be for a couple of starts. At this point, he is likely someone who can be dropped in redraft leagues.
Brooks Lee- – SS Minnesota Twins (bicep)
It turns out that Lee’s injury had been a lingering one since the end of July. Once it couldn’t heal and go away on its own, the team took action and now he is on the Injured List for a while. He also said that he received a cortisone shot to help things out. Once the medicine clears, he should be able to resume physical activity.
Carlos Correa – SS Minnesota Twins (foot)
Correa running and sprinting is a great sign of progress, but once he knows that his foot will respond well, he can push himself forward. Stay tuned.
Starling Marte – OF New York Mets (knee)
Starling Marte (bone bruise in right knee) played six innings in right field tonight for Double-A Binghamton, finishing 0-for-2 with a walk.
The Mets want to see him play back-to-back games in the field — which could happen as soon as Tuesday and Wednesday — before activation.
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) August 11, 2024
Marte coming back this week is definitely in play, and he is someone to target for a late-season push. He has been hitting for power and running while in his rehab assignment, which is what you want to see from someone known for his speed.
