MLB Injury Report for Wednesday, June 26, 2024.
Fernando Tatis Jr. – OF San Diego Padres (quad)
Fernando Tatís just spoke to reporters in the Padres clubhouse. Didn't get into timeline but knows he'll be out well past All-Star break
— Marty Caswell (@MartyCaswell) June 25, 2024
This piece of news had seemingly been passed on quietly throughout the media, but it was a potentially major bombshell. Tatis spoke to the media and revealed that he had a stress reaction in his quad. While I’m not a doctor, it is a precursor to a fracture and is something that teams and players should be careful with when diagnosing because of what is happening on the inside of the body. Sometimes these sorts of things go unnoticed, but they’re a big deal that is prevalent with soreness that doesn’t get better. The team must now wait for it to get better, and that can take time. Tatis himself said that he felt some cramping all over his body back in March and that it has escalated into what it is now. There are rumors that are all over the place from the All-Star Break all the way to a trip to the 60-day Injured List. While all of that is speculation right now, all we know is that this is shaping up to be a serious issue that requires significant time away. The team will likely wait for him to be pain/symptom-free before allowing him to either resume or continue along the path of baseball activities. Once that happens, which could be weeks from now, a rehab assignment may be needed. Fantasy owners should be prepared to be without him for quite a while.
Kyle Tucker – OF Houston Astros (shin)
Dana Brown speaking on Kyle Tucker on MLB NOW:
“It’s really a sore bone… I think he should be back to baseball activity sometime this week… I am hoping less than 3 weeks for him to return”
— Michael Schwab (@michaelschwab13) June 25, 2024
Tucker has been out of commission for quite some time. He’s been shut down from doing anything baseball-related because of this deep bone bruise. He has taken swings from a tee and is hopeful to start running any day now. Once that happens, he can begin to quickly ramp up all intensity in his baseball activities and hopefully rejoin the club. It remains to be seen if a rehab assignment is needed.
Justin Verlander – SP Houston Astros (neck)
Astros manager Joe Espada told @SportsMT that Justin Verlander is progressing slower than the team anticipated. He is still not throwing. Asked if this is a shoulder, arm or elbow problem, Espada reiterated is it just soreness in Verlander’s neck.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) June 25, 2024
It remains to be seen if this will linger on because of a deeper-seeded issue, or if it’s because of old age where the body just doesn’t heal as quickly. For now, Verlander is considered on the mend with a neck issue.
Kodai Senga – SP New York Mets (shoulder)
Kodai Senga (shoulder, triceps) intends to begin a minor league rehab assignment next week, assuming he comes out of one last live BP on Thursday feeling strong.
"I feel really good mechanically and physically," Senga said through an interpreter.
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) June 25, 2024
This is great news for the Mets and Senga, who will be looking to make his 2024 debut at some point in July. This is the farthest that he has progressed in any phase of his recovery, as other times he has suffered multiple setbacks. It will be interesting to see how he feels and performs here. Fantasy owners should expect a full and lengthy timeline for this rehab assignment.
Starling Marte – OF New York Mets (knee)
Carlos Mendoza says that Starling Marte has a deep bone bruise and will not be able to do any baseball activity for two weeks.
Mendoza also says that the Mets are looking at "at least four weeks" before Marte can be a player for them again. pic.twitter.com/mu9EQOu6oO
— SNY (@SNYtv) June 25, 2024
This injury will take a long time to heal, as indicated by Mendoza’s plan. Marte will be shut down for two weeks before ramping himself back up for a return. In the meantime, the Mets have pondered about suing Jeff McNeil in the outfield and will likely give veteran Ben Gamel a chance.
Kerry Carpenter – OF Detroit Tigers (back)
That's Kerry Carpenter. He's cleared for baseball activities, which is an important first step. pic.twitter.com/aDkTvPdtYk
— Evan Woodbery (@evanwoodbery) June 25, 2024
Carpenter has taken swings from a tee while also throwing, catching, and running all over the field. He will undoubtedly need a rehab assignment but is still likely weeks away from that.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand – 1B Cincinnati Reds (wrist)
Christian Encarnacion-Strand to have right hand surgery on July 11. Recovery time expected to be three months.
— Mark Sheldon (@m_sheldon) June 25, 2024
There were rumors that Encarnacion-Strand would be seeking this option, and now they’ve come to fruition. With this plan in place, concerns of wrist injuries sapping power aren’t as prevalent since the season will begin seven months post-surgery. He is someone to target for cheap in dynasty leagues.
Nick Lodolo – SP Cincinnati Reds (blister)
The #Reds today recalled from Triple-A Louisville RHP Yosver Zulueta and placed on the 15-day injured list, retro to 6/24, LHP Nick Lodolo (left finger blister). pic.twitter.com/pjr34ZkOhE
— Cincinnati Reds (@Reds) June 25, 2024
The good news is that it is just a blister and nothing internal. This could be a blessing in disguise to give Lodolo some time to rest and limit his overall workload after missing 2023 with bigger injuries.
Bryan Woo – SP Seattle Mariners (hamstring)
Bryan Woo called called the hamstring strain that he suffered “low-level" based on the MRI that he underwent. And he's unsure of a timeline to return.
"Just taking it day by day right now. It's the first time I've ever dealt with something like this."https://t.co/gFEzzqiv6x
— Daniel Kramer (@DKramer_) June 25, 2024
Due to the fact that this is a low-level injury, the hope is that Woo can return right after the fifteen days he will be on the Injured List. As for a spot in the rotation, the Mariners have Thursday and Monday off, so they may be able to manipulate that part of their schedule for now.
Arizona Diamondbacks – Team Update
D-backs injury updates, per Torey:
-Zac Gallen will throw a bullpen Thursday. Could pitch for D-backs Saturday.
-Alek Thomas will play CF for Reno tonight. Will need "at least a couple games" there.
-Gabriel Moreno will catch Gallen's bullpen and could return after 10-day min.
— Jesse Friedman (@JesseNFriedman) June 26, 2024
Zac Gallen (hamstring), who last pitched on May 30, is aiming to return almost one month later. He has been trending in the right direction and looks to be one bullpen session away from being activated. As for Gabriel Moreno (thumb), this session could go a long way in determining how close he is to returning. He is on the Injured List with a sprained thumb, though the early reports have said that he isn’t likely to miss much more than the ten-day minimum. Finally, Alek Thomas (hamstring) finished 1-for-3 with a double in last night’s game. He could be back early next week if all goes well.
Teoscar Hernandez – OF Los Angeles Dodgers (personal)
#Dodgers OF Teoscar Hernandez was scheduled to fly from the Dominican Republic to Chicago today, but MGR Dave Roberts said after last night's game that he will give Hernandez another day off vs. #WhiteSox tonight.
— Mike DiGiovanna (@MikeDiGiovanna) June 25, 2024
Hernandez is wished the absolute best for a quick and safe return.
Josh Jung – 3B Texas Rangers (wrist)
General manager Chris Young said Jung has “tendon inflammation.” He classified Jung’s return on this road trip as “ambitious,” but said it should calm down with time + rest.
Young called it an understandable hiccup, expectation is they get it under control in a few days. https://t.co/ylxYbdcXAm
— Shawn McFarland (@McFarland_Shawn) June 25, 2024
Jung had his meeting with team officials to check him over and this is what they found. While it’s not expected to be a major setback, it is somewhat worrisome that the wrist is experiencing this sort of inflammation. While rest is what is recommended, it does explain his cold bat in his minor league rehab assignment. Jung has gone 4-for-17 with no home runs and five strikeouts in his four games played.
Liam Hendriks – RP Boston Red Sox (Tommy John Surgery)
Alex Cora said Liam Hendriks will throw his first bullpen later this week
— Christopher Smith (@SmittyOnMLB) June 25, 2024
This is an important first major step in his road to recovery. Hendriks has yet to be on the mound since his surgery, and this will be a big indication of how quickly the team can and should accelerate things.
