Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Wednesday, August 21, 2024. In today’s edition, the Twins have a bevy of injuries worth updating, Jacob deGrom has an ETA for a return, Ha-Seong Kim heads to the Injured List, and the OPriles lose yet another pitcher to injury, this time in Zach Eflin. All of that and so much more int today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report
Carlos Correa – SS Minnesota Twins (foot)
Correa continues to progress slowly, but he seems at a standstill concerning how much he can do without risking too much potential discomfort. As mentioned here, his future depends on how much pain he can manage, and from there he will be able to be able to do enough to return hopefully. That said, in the past, he’s stated that he wants to be able to return and stay with the team to contribute. This is just a roundabout way of saying that his return could happen at any time, but it all depends on how he feels.
Byron Buxton – OF Minnesota Twins (hip)
Buxton seems to be trending in the right direction, as he was able to do a lot on the field. The hip is important for every facet of the game, and as such, it will need to be in near-perfect condition for him to be able to return and perform at a high level. The team has tomorrow off and plans on evaluating the situation then with the potential of him returning on Friday.
Brooks Lee – SS Minnesota Twins (shoulder)
It looks like Lee is all but ready for a rehab assignment after being able to physically do a lot of the things he’s expected to do daily.
Alex Kirilloff – 1B/OF Minnesota Twins (back)
Kirilloff needs to get healthy enough to hopefully compete for a starting or depth job with the Twins for the 2025 season. If he cannot do that, then his time with the team may be over, as the often-injured star has never been able to live up to the potential many thought he had.
Tyler Mahle – SP Texas Rangers (shoulder)
Rangers transactions for Tuesday:
– RHP Jon Gray activated from 15-day Injured List
– RHP Tyler Mahle placed on 15-day Injured List with right shoulder tightness— Texas Rangers PR (@TXRangersPR) August 20, 2024
It’s an unfortunate setback for a popular late-season waiver wire pickup in most leagues. With it being this late in the year, he cannot afford any setbacks while recovering from this injury, or his season may be over.
Ha-Seong Kim – SS San Diego Padres (shoulder)
Ha-Seong Kim will go on the IL, Mike Shildt says. Adds that it was possible Kim would have been back before the 10 days, but there’s no reason to rush it.
— AJ Cassavell (@AJCassavell) August 20, 2024
Kim will head to the Injured List with a date retroactive to the 19th of August. From the sound of it here, it doesn’t sound like an overly concerning injury, but one that needs to be taken care of now so that he can be ready for the playoffs. It was also announced by the team that Xander Bogaerts won’t be used as a starting shortstop and that he would only be used sparingly as an in-game replacement.
Jacob deGrom – SP Texas Rangers (elbow)
With deGrom scheduled to begin his rehab assignment this week, the plan is for him to throw in a total of four games before returning. A mid-September return date puts him in line for about three or four starts during the regular season. More specifically, the team is hopeful for a return at some point around September 10th or 11th.
Hunter Harvey – RP Kansas City Royals (back)
Hunter Harvey (mid-back tightness) suffered a setback and received a cortisone injection today. He’s shut down from all activity for 2-3 days but Matt Quatraro said Harvey could be back playing catch by the end of the week.

Harvey has been out of action for three weeks after being acquired in a trade from the Nationals. He suffered from back spasms before this injury, so there may be something more significant not yet known. Stay tuned.
Ranger Suarez – SP Philadelphia Phillies (back)
A few notes while #Phillies hold off on lineup while awaiting updates on a few players dealing with “wear and tear,” as Rob Thomson put it:
—Cristopher Sánchez will start Thursday in Atlanta.
—Assuming no issues during bullpen session, Ranger Suárez will start Saturday in KC
— Scott Lauber (@ScottLauber) August 20, 2024
As was previously planned, Suarez looks to be returning this weekend, barring any unforeseen problems beforehand.
Zach Eflin – SP Baltimore Orioles (shoulder)

— Orioles on MASN (@masnOrioles) August 20, 2024
The team said that he was feeling sore after his last outing, and it took longer than expected for him to get right. As such, they decided to place him on the Injured List to give him that time, and they are hopeful that it will be a minimum stay on the Injured List. At this point in the season, it’s almost at the point where injuries like this take a while to recover. The Orioles are focused on making and advancing through the postseason. Eflin will be a big factor in how far they can go toward a World Series, so if he needs rest now, they’ll be more than happy to give it to him. Fantasy owners need to be cognizant of this and understand that he may miss some time to help accommodate the non-fantasy needs of the team.
Jorge Soler – OF Atlanta Braves (hamstring)
Soler thinks he will be ready to play Friday
— Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) August 20, 2024
Be prepared.
Jeimer Candelario – INF Cincinnati Reds (toe)
The #Reds today reported to the 26-player roster IF Amed Rosario and placed on the 10-day injured list IF Jeimer Candelario (left great toe fracture).
— Cincinnati Reds (@Reds) August 20, 2024
It’s an unfortunate tale about how Candelario injured himself. It happened during a game where it was raining outside, and instead of it being called a rain delay, the team labored on. He was subsequently hit on the foot and it was broken.
Luis Gil – SP New York Yankees (back)
Asked if this could be an IL situation, Luis Gil said doctors told him to take things "day by day."
He said he first felt back tightness in the 3rd inn but tried to pitch through it. He and Aaron Boone said this had not been an issue before tonight. #Yankees
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) August 21, 2024
Gil’s injury will be examined later today, as the Yankees want to see exactly what they have here before proclaiming a trip to the Injured List. If he were to miss some time, the Yankees may have to do some mixing and matching while they wait for Clarke Schmidt to be ready for a return. Will Warren feels like the beneficiary of this situation.
