MLB Injury Report
Ryan Mountcastle – 1B Baltimore Orioles
Mountcastle said he felt the shoulder pop. Will have imaging tomorrow. Concerned #orioles
— Roch Kubatko (@masnRoch) September 14, 2023
Mountcastle left the game last night with what was labeled as shoulder discomfort. It was later revealed that he heard his shoulder pop. Today’s imaging will decide the extent of his injury and the steps that the team should take. Ryan O’Hearn should take over at first base, though Heston Kjerstad was pulled from his minor league game last night and could be a replacement.
Kenley Jansen – RP Boston Red Sox
Jansen has COVID and is going on the COVID IL.
— Chris Cotillo (@ChrisCotillo) September 13, 2023
This might help explain Jansen’s absence as of late and his declining performance. He is wished well while he is gone.
Garrett Crochet – RP Chicago White Sox
Garret Crochet's rehab assignment transferred to AAA Charlotte after making six appearances with AA Birmingham (4 ER, 6 IP, 11 K). Crochet has been on the 15-day IL since 6/17 with left shoulder inflammation.
— Daryl Van Schouwen (@CST_soxvan) September 13, 2023
Crochet continues to trend upward, though it remains to be seen if he’ll be back before the end of the season. During his three games at both levels, he has seven strikeouts and one walk over three innings of work.
Triston McKenzie – SP Cleveland Guardians
#Guardians RHP Triston McKenzie looked sharp tonight in his rehab start for Akron allowing just one run on one hit while striking out four over three innings of work. McKenzie topped out at 93 mph.

— Guardians Prospective (@CleGuardPro) September 13, 2023
McKenzie, much like Bieber the other day, looked sharp in his first game back. It remains to be seen if he will return to the Guardians this season, but he may get one or two outings in before it’s all said and done.
Daniel Hudson – RP Los Angeles Dodgers
Daniel Hudson's currently throwing off the bullpen mound. Not from the rubber – just off the slope. He's conceded he's running out of time with his sprained MCL in his right knee, but he's still throwing.
— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) September 12, 2023
Hudson is running out of time, and any return might be for peace of mind over anything else.
Jazz Chisholm – 2B/OF Miami Marlins
Jazz Chisholm Jr. expressed minimal concern when asked about the right knee discomfort that led to his exit from Wednesday's game. 🎙 pic.twitter.com/UcbqpXuzr7
— Bally Sports Florida: Marlins (@BallyMarlins) September 14, 2023
Chisholm himself said that this came out of nowhere and that his knee hadn’t been hurting before. He didn’t seem concerned and expects to come in today and pinch-hit if necessary. While it’s encouraging to hear that, the medical professionals would be the ones whose opinion matters most. Either way, stay tuned.
Sandy Alcantara – SP Miami Marlins
Per #Marlins manager Skip Schumaker, Sandy Alcantara’s MRI revealed a UCL sprain.
Skip non-committal about a return for Alcantara this season but noted “watching him throw is a good thing. It’s a progression. We’re going to watch it every day and go from there.”
— Jordan McPherson (@J_McPherson1126) September 13, 2023
From the sounds of it, the team would be wise to keep Alcantara out for the remainder of the season. Anything done too quickly could jeopardize the long-term future of him and his arm. That said, he is eligible to return this Tuesday and the team is in the midst of a playoff hunt.
Christian Yelich – OF Milwaukee Brewers
Christian Yelich is going through another pregame of running and hitting and is making progress, Craig Counsell said. Not ruled out for an at-bat off the bench tonight at this point.
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) September 13, 2023
This is the fourth game in a row that Yelich has missed without being placed on the Injured List. With him considered as a pinch-hitter last night, perhaps the return is near. Either way, a decision needs to be made soon about him and this injury.
Minnesota Twins – Team Update
Other updates:
Taylor will be activated on the road trip
Miranda will undergo surgery tomorrow, and we'll learn the details that when it's over
Gordon and Stewart are headed to Iowa to join Triple-A St. Paul; Alcala, Paddack and Gallo will join the Saints when they return home
— Do-Hyoung Park (@dohyoungpark) September 13, 2023
Paddack will throw one more bullpen session with Wichita and then make a relief outing for St. Paul next week. Alcala will pitch again for Wichita for more than one inning on Friday before moving up to St. Paul.
— Do-Hyoung Park (@dohyoungpark) September 13, 2023
A lot to unpack here. First, Michael Taylor will be back soon, and the team could use his defensive skills in the outfield. As for Jose Miranda, his season is officially over as he could never get his shoulder quite right. There’s no word on his placement for the team next year. Joey Gallo will hopefully return to the Twins for a handful of games before the team heads to the playoffs. Finally, the news on Paddack is encouraging, as there’s a chance we see him pitch for the Twins before the season’s end.
Brett Baty – 3B New York Mets
Brett Baty departed tonight's game due to left groin soreness, the Mets say. He'll have an MRI to diagnose it.
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) September 14, 2023
There’s a chance that the Mets shut him down for the season and work on getting him right for 2024.
Ronny Mauricio – SS New York Mets
Ronny Mauricio is out of today's Mets lineup due to illness, Buck Showalter said.
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) September 13, 2023
Look for Mauricio to return once he’s healthy and get some at-bats while he develops.
Starling Marte – OF New York Mets
Starling Marte (groin strain) went through the full gamut of baseball activities today, including a BP session that saw him park at least one ball deep into the second deck.
Marte says he could return as soon as this homestand, which runs thru Sun. "I've been working hard, man."
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) September 13, 2023
It would be a feel-good moment for Marte if he could return before the end of the season. By being healthy, he could always be a trade piece for the Mets in the offseason.
Joe Musgrove – SP San Diego Padres
From the sounds of it, Musgrove will be shut down at some point soon. The team did the same with Yu Darvish, and it makes sense to continue that trend. Musgrove himself doesn’t seem able to take a big leap forward and extend himself to do more; this is fair, as nobody wants a long-term injury, especially with the team not competing for a playoff run.
Michael Conforto – OF San Francisco Giants
Giants expect Michael Conforto back in lineup at some point during this next Rockies series. Logan Webb will start tomorrow, Keaton Winn will be heavily involved Friday.
— Alex Pavlovic (@PavlovicNBCS) September 13, 2023
Be prepared.
Jarred Kelenic – OF Seattle Mariners
He’s available if needed. But they’d prefer to give him today off with the offday tomorrow https://t.co/zYr2Qgzt7v
— Ryan Divish (@RyanDivish) September 13, 2023
Kelenic fouled a ball off of his foot on Monday, but the good news is that it wasn’t his previously injured foot. The hope is that he can return on the weekend.
Dylan Carlson – OF St. Louis Cardinals
OF Dylan Carlson will have season-ending ankle surgery, Oli Marmol said. #STLCards
— Lynn Worthy (@LWorthySports) September 13, 2023
The writing was on the wall for a while, so this should come as no surprise. Carlson will look to be ready for next season.
Nolan Gorman – 2B St. Louis Cardinals
INF Nolan Gorman (right hamstring strain) has been placed on the 10-day IL.
INF Juniel Querecuto has been selected from Memphis (AAA). He will wear uniform #62. pic.twitter.com/dvEbxVtRXc
— St. Louis Cardinals (@Cardinals) September 13, 2023
The team hopes that this won’t end his season, but there’s a legitimate shot that it does.
