MLB Injury Report: Ketel Marte reaggravates his injured ankle

Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Monday, August 19, 2024. In today’s edition, Ketel Marte reaggravated his ankle injury, Austin Riley and Freddie Freeman may miss time for their injured hands, and the Rays may need to find a new closer to replace Pete Fairbanks. All of that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report

Ketel Marte – 2B Arizona Diamondbacks (ankle)

From the sounds of it, Marte will be headed to the Injured List. He had been trying to play through the pain and to get himself back onto the field to help the team. Unfortunately for everyone involved, this setback may cost him significant time. There should be more updates later today.

Christian Walker – 1B Arizona Diamondbacks (oblique)

Walker is slowly progressing, as he was swinging from a tee earlier in the week. He originally wanted to return within three weeks of the injury, but it’s looking as if that won’t happen. While he likely won’t need a rehab assignment, he still has a ways to go before returning.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. – INF/OF New York Yankees (elbow)

Chisholm’s original statement about probably playing again once he is eligible to return, and this is a step in the right direction. That being said, he still has a lot to do before coming back, but practicing in the field this early is a good start.

Austin Riley – 3B Atlanta Braves (hand)

Riley was hit on the right hand early in the game yesterday and was removed immediately. With tests coming back inconclusive, it could mean that there’s something there that they need to identify or focus on. With nothing definitive, there is a chance that he will miss time next week, or worse, wind up on the Injured List. Stay tuned.

Reynaldo Lopez – SP Atlanta Braves (forearm)

Be prepared.

Ha-Seong Kim – INF San Diego Padres (shoulder)

Kim suffered the injury while diving into first base. He was forced to leave the game, and there was some concern that he would miss significant time away from the team. This is a promising update from manager Mike Shidt, but we will find out more once the results of the imaging is complete. Stay tuned.

Pete Fairbanks – RP Tampa Bay Rays (lat)

The velocity from Fairbanks was very low at this start, and it turns out that he suffered a lat strain. He wound up surrendering three runs in just two-thirds of an inning, registering his fourth blown save of the season. There was no word on the severity of the situation, but for the team to already indicate a trip to the Injured List, it must be bad enough to warrant possible additional time away. There is a chance that he will miss the rest of the season. If that’s the case, fantasy owners should look toward either Edwin Uceta or Manuel Rodriguez for saves, according to Fantrax’s own Mike Carter. Be sure to check out his weekly column on everything bullpen-related.

Yandy Diaz – 1B Tampa Bay Rays (forearm)

This is the best news possible, as both the X-rays and MRI came back clean for Diaz. Consider him DTD until we hear otherwise.

Brandon Nimmo – OF New York Mets (shoulder)

Nimmo made a terrific catch earlier in the game, but it looks as if it had some repercussions. Nimmo was forced to leave the game after a swing that caused some general achiness. There’s a chance that this will land him on the Injured List, and fantasy owners should monitor this before setting their weekly lineups later today.

Hunter Greene – SP Cincinnati Reds (elbow)

Greene went to the Injured List on Saturday with right elbow soreness. David Bell here did say that he and the team were encouraged by what they initially saw from his MRI and that they are hopeful to have him return after the fifteen days. That being said, there should be more solidified updates in the coming days, as there is a chance that this is the last we see of Greene for the remainder of the season. With the team six games out of a Wild Card spot and many teams in front of them, they may not want to push him hard here if they don’t have to.

Justin Verlander – SP Houston Astros (neck)

Verlander last pitched on June 9, and he will make his triumphant return to the mound almost two months later. Regardless of his time away, fantasy owners should be prepared.

Alex Bregman – 3B Houston Astros (elbow)

This update from Espada doesn’t necessarily mean that he will return today, as the team begins a three-game series at Boston before traveling to Baltimore. There will surely be updates throughout the day.

Freddie Freeman – 1B Los Angeles Dodgers (finger)

Freeman jammed his finger on Saturday, and the day after he was in a lot more pain than he was the day before. He will undergo a CT scan later today to determine the severity of the situation. With both Max Muncy and Tommy Edman being activated today, there is a chance that Freeman will miss at least the next ten days for this ailment. Stay tuned.

Liam Hendriks – RP Boston Red Sox (elbow)

This was an incredibly solid first outing for Liam Hendriks. There has been no word on how many more outings he would need before debuting with the Red Sox, but at least another week of rehab is expected.

Jared Jones – SP Pittsburgh Pirates (lat)

Jones struggled in his last outing, surrendering four earned runs and seven hits in just over three innings of work. It looks like the team wants to see more out of him before bringing him back.

Texas Rangers – Team Update

Big news here, as the Rangers will be sending Jacob deGrom (elbow) on a rehab assignment. Stay tuned for details. As for Max Scherzer (shoulder), he is attempting to make a return to the team, and his bullpen sessions and rehab starts are a sign in the right direction. He might be close enough to need just one rehab start as he’s been on the fast track back to the team all season.
