All of that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report
Arizona Diamondbacks – Team Update
Eduardo Rodriguez and Merrill Kelly are throwing at Chase Field this morning. Plan is to see how the feel tomorrow and then decide next steps.
— Alex Weiner (@alexjweiner) July 28, 2024
Both Merrill Kelly (shoulder) and Eduardo Rodriguez (shoulder) have thrown multiple bullpens and simulated games over the past week. It would appear that they are at a crossroads here concerning what to do next. We should find out more once the team reports how they are both feeling after yesterday’s events. The hope is for them to start a rehab assignment shortly and be back sometime in August.
Reynaldo Lopez – SP Atlanta Braves (forearm)
Reynaldo López is headed to Atlanta for an MRI. Braves should know more tonight.
— Justin Toscano (@JustinCToscano) July 28, 2024
Lopez left yesterday’s game after just three innings and will undergo an MRI to determine the next steps. The good news is that this happened days before the trade deadline, which gives the team time to trade for a replacement if necessary. Forearm tightness is a scary proposition for any pitcher, and the hope here is that it is a minor transgression.
Triston Casas – 1B Boston Red Sox (ribs)
Casas is expected to start a rehab assignment on Tuesday, likely with Worcester.
— Alex Speier (@alexspeier) July 28, 2024
Casas’ return has been a long time coming, but he’s not out of the woods just yet. He will need to prove that he is physically able to sustain the rigors of hitting, throwing, catching, and movement over a long period. This will likely be a lengthy rehab assignment, with any setback treated as possibly season-ending.
Josh Naylor – 1B Cleveland Guardians (undisclosed)
Stephen Vogt says Josh Naylor is available off the bench today and will return to the lineup "hopefully tomorrow" after a few days off to heal what Vogt will only describe as being "beat up."
— Zack Meisel (@ZackMeisel) July 28, 2024
Naylor was given the weekend off to recover from what was considered a “beat up” body. The plan is for him to be back today and ready to help the Guardians continue their surprisingly positive season.
Brenton Doyle – OF Colorado Rockies (finger)
#Rockies Brenton Doyle has a finger injury on his throwing hand, Bud Black says.
— Patrick Saunders (@psaundersdp) July 28, 2024
Doyle should be considered DTD for now, but the team has been quiet about giving updates on the status of their slugger. Once they do that, we should have a better idea as to if this is a long-term situation or not.
Parker Meadows – OF Detroit Tigers (hamstring)
Parker Meadows begins a rehab assignment with @MudHens today. He will DH this afternoon, then play CF after off-day Monday.
— Jason Beck (@beckjason) July 28, 2024
Great news that Meadows is getting himself back into game action. He finished yesterday’s debut going 0-for-1 with two walks and a strikeout. Today’s attempt to play the field should give a better idea of how his hamstring feels.
Justin Verlander – SP Houston Astros (neck)
Astros SP Justin Verlander threw a bullpen session before Saturday's game vs. the Dodgers. Manager Joe Espada says "It went really well." pic.twitter.com/ZJ4NAE7t6Y
— Sal Maneen (@SalManeen) July 27, 2024
Verlander threw more than 50 pitches in that session, and, like with others he has thrown, it’s a wait-and-see approach with him to gauge how he feels physically. The hope is that he can return this week, but he may require a rehab assignment since he hasn’t pitched competitively since June 9.
Mike Trout – OF Los Angeles Angels (knee)
Mike Trout hasn't begun running, Ron Washington said.
"It's Mike, you have to talk to Mike. It's all on Mike. How he feels, and if he can go out there. We can't force him out there."
Wash said trainers aren't holding him out. But noted the injury is scary/hopes he's back soon.
— Sam Blum (@SamBlum3) July 28, 2024
It has to be frustrating for the team, as it would appear that they want to push harder here and feel that the timing and situation are right to do so. With that in mind, it is Trout’s hesitation to do so because everything isn’t as it should be and he feels uncomfortable to advance. This is quite common with him, which could explain his extended absences year after year.
Los Angeles Dodgers – Team Update
Mookie Betts continues to swing a bat and has progressed to soft toss and flips, per Dave Roberts. Could take batting practice soon.
Roberts said Max Muncy’s progress is “stagnant.” Still dealing with some discomfort but tests have come back clean.
— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) July 28, 2024
Mookie Betts (hand) has been swinging a bat for about a week now, but the soft-tossing and flips are now new. The grip on his left hand is stronger than that of his right hand. He has a lot still to accomplish, such as taking full batting practice and a possible rehab assignment, but for now, the smaller steps forward should be celebrated as well. As for Max Muncy (oblique), he hasn’t played since May 16, and with the way things are going, it’s fair to wonder if he will play again this season. There are two months to go and he is still dealing with the pain. He will need a lengthy rehab assignment before returning.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (tricep)
Dave Roberts also let us know, Yamamoto will throw a bullpen session this coming Friday. #Dodgers
— David Vassegh (@THEREAL_DV) July 28, 2024
Yamamoto returning to the mound is a big step forward, as he had yet to do so before this announcement. From there, he will hopefully progress to a bullpen session before live batters. Overall, consider this news a positive one even though he has a ways to go before returning.
Carlos Correa – SS Minnesota Twins (foot)
Correa is still quite limited in his abilities on the field, but he’s slowly getting better. Until he starts running, he won’t be close to a return. When that happens is anyone’s guess.
Jose Miranda – 3B Minnesota Twins (head)
Miranda was hit in the head yesterday but passed the preliminary concussion protocol. His status going forward is up in the air and should be considered DTD, though there is still a chance that he winds up on the 7-day concussion Injured List as well.
Kodai Senga – SP New York Mets (calf)
New York Mets ace Kodai Senga's season is over after one start, manager Carlos Mendoza tells reporters, out with a high grade left calf strain.
— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) July 27, 2024
In an extremely disappointing development, it was revealed that Senga’s injury is significant enough to warrant it as season-ending. He has since been placed on the 60-day IL and will likely spend the offseason trying to get himself in the best shape possible for a bounce-back season in 2025. It would be a very disappointing end to his year, which will likely end with just 5.1 innings pitched.
Giancarlo Stanton – OF New York Yankees (hamstring)
Giancarlo Stanton is still on track to return tomorrow, per Aaron Boone. #Yankees
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) July 28, 2024
Be prepared.
Ranger Suarez – SP Philadelphia Phillies (back)
The Phillies have placed LHP Ranger Suárez on the 15-day IL (retro to 7/24) with lower back soreness. To fill his spot on the 26-man roster, LHP Kolby Allard was recalled from Lehigh Valley (AAA).
— Philadelphia Phillies (@Phillies) July 27, 2024
There hasn’t been any indication that this will last longer than the 15-day minimum, but it also hasn’t been ruled out.
Jared Jones – SP Pittsburgh Pirates (lat)
Jared Jones threw a bullpen this afternoon in Arizona. He threw 30 total pitches, using each of the four pitches in his arsenal. Said he’s feeling good. His FB velo sat between 93-95 mph, which is where he said it normally sits during a bullpen.
— Noah Hiles (@_NoahHiles) July 27, 2024
Jones continues to progress forward, this time by including all four pitches in his repertoire. What’s next for him is a two-up bullpen followed by a live BP once the team returns from its road trip. With all of that in mind, it looks like he still has a long way to go before returning because a rehab assignment is likely on tap too.
Nick Gonzales – 2B Pittsburgh Pirates (groin)
Ben Cherington says on his @937theFan radio show that Nick Gonzales is headed to the IL. He believes he will play again this year, but this IL stint will be measured in weeks, not days
— Alex Stumpf (@AlexJStumpf) July 28, 2024
The injury is significant enough to be measured in weeks, and the dreaded “play again this year” was used to foretell his future. A September return seems more likely than any time in August.
Joe Musgrove – SP San Diego Padres (elbow)
Musgrove used all of his pitches and did so with a high intensity. This was a major step forward for him, though it’s unclear how quickly the team will move him along here. A return in August seems likely, but it is a recurring issue, so not a lot should be expected out of him at first.
Alex Cobb – SP San Francisco Giants (hip/blister)
Alex Cobb popped a blister on his right index finger early in his last rehab outing, so his return has been pushed again. He’s frustrated, but is now likely to return sometime during the Reds series.
— Shayna Rubin (@ShaynaRubin) July 28, 2024
Just another unfortunate setback here for Cobb who must postpone his much-awaited debut even further.
Bryan Woo – SP Seattle Mariners (hamstring)
Bryan Woo experienced some discomfort in his right hamstring — the one that landed him on the IL last month — which is why he left after 70 pitches.
But Scott Servais said that they anticipate Woo will be fine to make his next start.
— Daniel Kramer (@DKramer_) July 28, 2024
Woo has now suffered multiple hamstring ailments alongside an arm injury this year. While his overall numbers have been great, it’s a worrisome profile for the future.
Josh Jung – 3B Texas Rangers (wrist)
Jung has gone 4-for-10 over three games played with one double. He will likely need at least a few more rehab games, but it sounds like he will be back sooner rather than later.
Jacob deGrom – SP Texas Rangers (elbow)
Jacob deGrom will be with the Rangers in St. Louis. The plan is for him to throw two more bullpens before he faces hitters, according to Bruce Bochy.
— Shawn McFarland (@McFarland_Shawn) July 27, 2024
It sounds like deGrom could be facing live hitters within the week, which would be a big hurdle to clear.
