MLB Injury Report – Kodai Senga is done for the year

Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury report for Monday, July 29, 2024. In today’s edition, the weekend’s injury updates are discussed, such as Mike Trout’s progress, Kodai Senga’s shortened season, Reynaldo Lopez’s ailment, and Carlos Correa’s foot. All of that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report

Arizona Diamondbacks – Team Update

Both Merrill Kelly (shoulder) and Eduardo Rodriguez (shoulder) have thrown multiple bullpens and simulated games over the past week. It would appear that they are at a crossroads here concerning what to do next. We should find out more once the team reports how they are both feeling after yesterday’s events. The hope is for them to start a rehab assignment shortly and be back sometime in August.

Reynaldo Lopez – SP Atlanta Braves (forearm)

Lopez left yesterday’s game after just three innings and will undergo an MRI to determine the next steps. The good news is that this happened days before the trade deadline, which gives the team time to trade for a replacement if necessary. Forearm tightness is a scary proposition for any pitcher, and the hope here is that it is a minor transgression.

Triston Casas – 1B Boston Red Sox (ribs)

Casas’ return has been a long time coming, but he’s not out of the woods just yet. He will need to prove that he is physically able to sustain the rigors of hitting, throwing, catching, and movement over a long period. This will likely be a lengthy rehab assignment, with any setback treated as possibly season-ending.

Josh Naylor – 1B Cleveland Guardians (undisclosed)

Naylor was given the weekend off to recover from what was considered a “beat up” body. The plan is for him to be back today and ready to help the Guardians continue their surprisingly positive season.

Brenton Doyle – OF Colorado Rockies (finger)

Doyle should be considered DTD for now, but the team has been quiet about giving updates on the status of their slugger. Once they do that, we should have a better idea as to if this is a long-term situation or not.

Parker Meadows – OF Detroit Tigers (hamstring)

Great news that Meadows is getting himself back into game action. He finished yesterday’s debut going 0-for-1 with two walks and a strikeout. Today’s attempt to play the field should give a better idea of how his hamstring feels.

Justin Verlander – SP Houston Astros (neck)

Verlander threw more than 50 pitches in that session, and, like with others he has thrown, it’s a wait-and-see approach with him to gauge how he feels physically. The hope is that he can return this week, but he may require a rehab assignment since he hasn’t pitched competitively since June 9.

Mike Trout – OF Los Angeles Angels (knee)

It has to be frustrating for the team, as it would appear that they want to push harder here and feel that the timing and situation are right to do so. With that in mind, it is Trout’s hesitation to do so because everything isn’t as it should be and he feels uncomfortable to advance. This is quite common with him, which could explain his extended absences year after year.

Los Angeles Dodgers – Team Update

Mookie Betts (hand) has been swinging a bat for about a week now, but the soft-tossing and flips are now new. The grip on his left hand is stronger than that of his right hand. He has a lot still to accomplish, such as taking full batting practice and a possible rehab assignment, but for now, the smaller steps forward should be celebrated as well. As for Max Muncy (oblique), he hasn’t played since May 16, and with the way things are going, it’s fair to wonder if he will play again this season. There are two months to go and he is still dealing with the pain. He will need a lengthy rehab assignment before returning.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (tricep)

Yamamoto returning to the mound is a big step forward, as he had yet to do so before this announcement. From there, he will hopefully progress to a bullpen session before live batters. Overall, consider this news a positive one even though he has a ways to go before returning.

Carlos Correa – SS Minnesota Twins (foot)

Correa is still quite limited in his abilities on the field, but he’s slowly getting better. Until he starts running, he won’t be close to a return. When that happens is anyone’s guess.

Jose Miranda – 3B Minnesota Twins (head)

Miranda was hit in the head yesterday but passed the preliminary concussion protocol. His status going forward is up in the air and should be considered DTD, though there is still a chance that he winds up on the 7-day concussion Injured List as well.

Kodai Senga – SP New York Mets (calf)

In an extremely disappointing development, it was revealed that Senga’s injury is significant enough to warrant it as season-ending. He has since been placed on the 60-day IL and will likely spend the offseason trying to get himself in the best shape possible for a bounce-back season in 2025. It would be a very disappointing end to his year, which will likely end with just 5.1 innings pitched.

Giancarlo Stanton – OF New York Yankees (hamstring)

Be prepared.

Ranger Suarez – SP Philadelphia Phillies (back)

There hasn’t been any indication that this will last longer than the 15-day minimum, but it also hasn’t been ruled out.

Jared Jones – SP Pittsburgh Pirates (lat)

Jones continues to progress forward, this time by including all four pitches in his repertoire. What’s next for him is a two-up bullpen followed by a live BP once the team returns from its road trip. With all of that in mind, it looks like he still has a long way to go before returning because a rehab assignment is likely on tap too.

Nick Gonzales – 2B Pittsburgh Pirates (groin)

The injury is significant enough to be measured in weeks, and the dreaded “play again this year” was used to foretell his future. A September return seems more likely than any time in August.

Joe Musgrove – SP San Diego Padres (elbow)

Musgrove used all of his pitches and did so with a high intensity. This was a major step forward for him, though it’s unclear how quickly the team will move him along here. A return in August seems likely, but it is a recurring issue, so not a lot should be expected out of him at first.

Alex Cobb – SP San Francisco Giants (hip/blister)

Just another unfortunate setback here for Cobb who must postpone his much-awaited debut even further.

Bryan Woo – SP Seattle Mariners (hamstring)

Woo has now suffered multiple hamstring ailments alongside an arm injury this year. While his overall numbers have been great, it’s a worrisome profile for the future.

Josh Jung – 3B Texas Rangers (wrist)

Jung has gone 4-for-10 over three games played with one double. He will likely need at least a few more rehab games, but it sounds like he will be back sooner rather than later.

Jacob deGrom – SP Texas Rangers (elbow)

It sounds like deGrom could be facing live hitters within the week, which would be a big hurdle to clear.
