MLB Injury Report: Kyle Tucker has a Vague ETA

Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Thursday, August 22, 2024. In today’s edition, the Yankees and Dodgers have their hands full with players such as Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Tyler Glasnow, all of whom had big updates yesterday. There’s that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report

Jazz Chisholm Jr. – INF/OF New York Yankees

Over the past few days, Chisholm has been seen in the field taking grounders and also at the plate taking swings. He is eligible to return this Saturday, and while the team has said that it would be advantageous for him to be back on time, both of these steps have been significant progress. It remains to be seen when in fact he will return, but all of this is good news.

Anthony Rizzo – 1B New York Yankees (forearm)

Rizzo was also seen taking at-bats yesterday, and the news of his rehab beginning this weekend was announced shortly afterward. The veteran last played a game in mid-June, so the extent of this rehab assignment will likely be long. For fantasy purposes, the contributions here should be minimal down the stretch, as this is more of a baseball move for the Yankees as they approach the postseason.

Luis Gil – SP New York Yankees (back)

It’s good news that the injury is considered minor, but it’s peculiar also that it’s believed that Gil will return as a starter. There had been rumors of him being a bulk reliever for the team, especially with Clarke Schmidt returning soon. Either way, it looks like Gil will be able to contribute down the stretch.

Clarke Schmidt – SP New York Yankees (lat)

Throwing 50 pitches is a significant first step for Schmidt, who will look to return to the mound for the Yankees at some point in September.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (triceps)

This has been a slow and deliberate process by the Dodgers here, as Yamamoto may only get in a handful of starts for the team before their potential run in the playoffs. That being said, he has not suffered any setbacks and looks to be progressing well despite the slow pace of his return.

Tyler Glasnow – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (back)

This is somewhat distressing given the nature of the injury and how minimal the team and player thought it would be. From the sounds of it, his injury will last longer than expected, and any contribution from him down the stretch could be in question if this delay continues much longer. The hope is that he can return to throwing and catching, which is the first of many steps in any pitching recovery.

Victor Vodnik – RP Colorado Rockies (shoulder)

Vodnik reported some shoulder soreness earlier in the week and was pulled while warming up in the bullpen. It turns out that this injury was more significant than expected and some time away was warranted. It’s disappointing in the sense that the team has always looked for stability in the bullpen, as their home situation makes it tough for any success. Vodnik had converted nine of ten saves this season and seemed to have a grip on the role.

Jon Gray – SP Texas Rangers (groin)

Be prepared.

Max Scherzer – SP Texas Rangers (shoulder)

All eyes will be on Scherzer’s rehab outing tomorrow, giving him the green light to take on the White Sox in a very favorable matchup next week.

Victor Robles – OF Seattle Mariners (hip)

There was very little information out there on this issue, other than he has an ailing hip. There will hopefully be more details released today explaining any plans or diagnosis.

J.P. Crawford – SS Seattle Mariners (finger)

Crawford last played in a game one month ago and was given a timeline of four to six weeks for a return. This move to a rehab assignment put him in line to potentially be back well within the latter portion of that estimation.

Garrett Crochet – SP Chicago White Sox

It’s important to note here that Crochet is not injured, nor has he been pitching through an injury. Instead, this is a preventative measure to help ensure that he doesn’t get injured in the future. Crochet has thrown a career-high 128.2 innings of work this year, which is far and away the highest total for him in any year throughout the minor and major leagues. In fact, his highest total prior to this season was back in 2019 when he pitched in college. The hope is that the team can get him to the offseason and work on a program that will allow him to throw just as many, if not more innings next season.

Kyle Tucker – OF Houston Astros (shin)

This is potentially good news for the return of Tucker, who is seemingly on his way back. That being said, given the timeline, it’s hard to gauge if he will still be going out on a rehab assignment. The first week of September ends in approximately two weeks, and he still has yet to fully recover physically. It’s also been noted that he won’t be released for a rehab assignment until he runs the bases (which he hasn’t yet). Regardless of when, it appears that he is in the final stages of this long-lasting injury.
