MLB Injury Report for Saturday, May 25, 2024.

Austin Riley – 3B Atlanta Braves (side)

Riley is aiming to play next week, though, with the way the team is handling this situation, anything is possible. The Braves are treating this like someone who knows that they are wrong, but can’t stop themselves to make it right. By the end of the weekend, he will have missed two full weeks of games without having gone on the Injured List. It’s unfathomable.

Steven Kwan – OF Cleveland Guardians (quad)

Kwan was given a four-week timetable for a return, and now he is set to begin a rehab assignment this weekend. There is a chance that he can beat this timeline and be back within the Guardians’ lineup before the end of the month. Stay tuned.

Kodai Senga – SP New York Mets (shoulder)

Senga’s soreness in his triceps has continued, so the team felt it would be necessary for a cortisone shot to help the inflammation dissipate. While it’s unclear if this will solve all of his problems, it’s hopeful to at least alleviate this and allow Senga the opportunity to build himself back up. Unfortunately, he has suffered through multiple setbacks already and there is no end in sight for this recovery. We may not see him back until the All-Star Break, and that’s if things work out for the best.

Francisco Alvarez – C New York Mets (thumb)

Today will be a big day for Alvarez, as hitting a ball will be a big hurdle. Once that it fully cleared, it’s all about getting himself back into game shape alongside working on his timing.

Gerrit Cole – SP New York Yankees (shoulder)

This will be his second such outing, which was monumental in its inception. Once he has done this exercise long enough without any setbacks, a rehab assignment will be next.

Royce Lewis – 3B Minnesota Twins (quad)

Park made note in later posts that Lewis will start at DH for Triple-A St. Paul before transitioning back to third base. That leads to the belief that this rehab assignment will be somewhat lengthy, but unlikely to be a full 30 days. Regardless of these specifics, this is great news.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand – 1B Cincinnati Reds (hand)

While it’s good to see Encarnacion-Strand fielding groundballs like this, it’s important to remember that we won’t know anything definitive until after his follow-up appointment which is scheduled for June 5. At that time we should have a better idea of a timeline and a recovery process. For now, consider yesterday’s exercise a way to keep his mind and body fresh and cohesive.

Wyatt Langford – OF Texas Rangers (hamstring)

While Langford finished the game 1-for-4, he did have three hard hits, making it a successful return to playing. It is unclear how long he will be rehabbing before he returns, though beat reporter Evan Grant suggested that Wednesday could be in play.

Nolan Jones – OF Colorado Rockies (low back strain, knee)

It’s not the best update on Jones, but at least it’s something in the right direction. Once he gets back into the batting cage, that’s when he might be accelerated back into the lineup. Until then, consider his return to be cloudy and unpredictable.

Robbie Ray – SP San Francisco Giants (elbow)

Ray had previously done some smaller bullpen sessions, but throwing against live batters is a big step forward. This is likely his final step to be cleared before heading out on a rehab assignment, though it’s important to remember that he will throw to live batters multiple times. A reminder too that his timeline for a return is geared around the All-Star Break.

Zach Neto – SS Los Angeles Angels (elbow)

This was part of a three-part post regarding the status of Neto. The biggest takeaway is that there is no structural damage in his elbow following an MRI. Instead, there is just inflammation. While it’s great to see that he will play today, Fletcher also noted that his throwing was limited to light tossing from shortstop to second base, as he did not throw to first base.

Michael Massey – 2B Kansas City Royals (back)

The hope is that this is minor, considering he missed the beginning of this season with an injury at the same part of the body.
