MLB Injury Report: No More Jazz?

Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Wednesday, August 13, 2024. In today’s edition, the news for Jazz Chisholm Jr. is bleak while the update on Byron Buxton and Ketel Marte is anything but that. Also, Riley Greene and Jacob Wilson begin their rehab assignments soon. All of that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report

Jazz Chisholm Jr. – INF/OF New York Yankees (elbow)

The extent and exact nature of the injury have not yet been revealed, but as indicated, we should know more after doctors get a better look at things over the next 24 hours. With or without surgery, he is looking at an extended absence here, more than likely being longer than the ten-day minimum. If he does need to have it surgically repaired, he is most likely able to be dropped in redraft leagues. All that being said, it would be wise to wait for an official word from the team with a projected timeline before making such a drastic move.

Ketel Marte – 2B Arizona Diamondbacks (ankle)

This is the best news that the Diamondbacks could have hoped for, as Marte is listed as DTD with a low-grade ankle sprain. Manager Torey Lovullo’s insistence that the injury was minor turned out to be correct, and it would appear that the NL-MVP frontrunner should return within days. Fantastic, as now Arizona has another weapon in its arsenal as they try to move up the standings.

Christian Walker – 1B Arizona Diamondbacks (oblique)

The good news is that he is asymptomatic and resuming baseball activities. For him, now it’s about regaining his form and timing while slowly ramping up activities and being careful to not re-aggravate the injury. Due to the length of time away, a rehab assignment is likely in the works.

Byron Buxton – OF Minnesota Twins (hip)

Great news here as it would appear that Buxton is on his way back to the Twins’ lineup shortly.

Detroit Tigers – Team Update

Big update here. Riley Greene (hamstring) ran on the field yesterday and it was determined that he is ready for a rehab assignment. He will begin one tomorrow, though there is no word on how long that assignment will last. As for Casey Mize (hamstring), he threw his second rehab game last night and he was able to stretch himself out to 3.1 innings of scoreless ball. Additionally, Reese Olson (shoulder) continues to progress, but there have been minimal details as to exactly what that means. As noted in prior reports, his time to make an impact in 2024 is running out. Finally, Wencel Perez (oblique) continues to rehab, but there haven’t been many details on his process either. The hope is that no news is good news concerning his status but be prepared for something soon.

J.D. Martinez – UT New York Mets (elbow)

Martinez was hit by a pitch in last night’s game and said that he felt fine until it was time to run. It was then that he said he couldn’t feel anything in his elbow. All that being said, this doesn’t appear to be something that will require more than a day or two off to help his bruise heal. That being said, it all depends on how he feels today, the day after the incident.

Christian Scott – SP New York Mets (elbow)

This is the first time Scott has thrown since being diagnosed with a sprained UCL. While this is encouraging, it’s important to note that he has many weeks of preparation and recovery to complete before a return is even considered. He is likely out for the season, with the small chance he gets in a game or two in the final week of the season.

Jacob Wilson – SS Oakland Athletics (hamstring)

This is fantastic news here, as rookie phenom Wilson could get back into the Oakland lineup by this time next week if everything goes right. While an official timeline hasn’t been openly discussed, one would think that it shouldn’t take much for him to return.

Liam Hendriks – RP Boston Red Sox (elbow)

It has been smooth sailing for Hendriks (knock on wood), as he continues to shine while throwing bullpens and feeling good afterward. If all goes well again today, chances are that he will begin a rehab assignment within the next week. It’s hard to gauge how long that assignment will be given the magnitude of his injury, but for relief pitchers, they are usually shorter. Still, he appears on track to return before September.

Ranger Suarez – SP Philadelphia Phillies (back)

It would appear that the path for a Suarez return is set, with him pitching next weekend. Fantasy owners will have to wait just a little bit longer to have him back in their lineups.
