Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Saturday, June 1, 2024. In today’s edition, Jordan Romano could miss some time in the future, Zac Gallen is officially placed on the Injured List, and Robbie Ray has a big day lined up for him today. All of that and so much more in otday’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report for Saturday, June 1, 2024.
Jordan Romano – RP Toronto Blue Jays (elbow)
Schneider says Jordan Romano’s elbow “didn’t bounce back” from his last outing so he was not available.
Described as soreness and they’ll know more tomorrow.
That does not sound ideal.— Scott Mitchell (@ScottyMitchTSN) June 1, 2024
Mitchell’s report was the most concerning of the group, as other reporters just reported the facts. There should be some sort of diagnosis given today, but chances are that Romano won’t pitch at all this weekend, regardless of the situation in the game. Yimi Garcia figures to get the first real shot at any save opportunity this weekend and he has some experience in his career as a closer.
Alek Manoah – SP Toronto Blue Jays (elbow)
Blue Jays say they’ve placed Alek Manoah on the injured list with a right elbow sprain.
They also announce the acquisition of righty Ryan Burr from the Phillies for cash considerations, he’ll be active tonight.
Righty Joel Kuhnel DFA’d to make room on 40.
— Shi Davidi (@ShiDavidi) May 31, 2024
The labeling of Manoah’s elbow as a sprain gives way to the fact that he is looking for a second opinion on the matter. Those appointments are rarely a good thing, but we should know more about this once that meeting is completed later this week. Bowden Francis is the rumored replacement within the rotation.
Zac Gallen – SP Arizona Diamondbacks (hamstring)

— Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) May 31, 2024
Gallen appeared to be in pain when this happened. Knowing this and that it was a recurring injury, chances are that he misses more than the minimum of fifteen days here.
Tyler Wells – SP Baltimore Orioles (elbow), John Means – SP Baltimore Orioles (elbow)
John Means and Tyler Wells both undergoing surgeries to repair UCLs, per #Orioles GM Mike Elias.
Both out for the season.
— Jake Rill (@JakeDRill) May 31, 2024
This is a huge blow to the Orioles who are contending for a divisional title. Their weakness, if anything, is rotational depth, and now they’re losing two pieces who could have contributed throughout the season. It’s disappointing for both but especially for Means who was looking to finally show that he was capable of leading the charge. Instead, both pitchers will miss the rest of the season with elbow surgeries. It was later clarified too that both could be having Tommy John Surgery, but the diagnosis won’t be known until the operation begins.
Kerry Carpenter – OF Detroit Tigers (lumbar spine stress fracture)
The injury to Kerry Carpenter is now being described as a "lumbar spine stress fracture," per the Tigers' medical report.
It was originally described as a lumbar spine inflammation.
— Evan Woodbery (@evanwoodbery) May 31, 2024
This new diagnosis is a more significant one that should lengthen Carpenter’s time away from the team. We should know more once the Tigers address the situation, but chances are that we won’t see him for quite a while.
Michael Massey – 2B Kansas City Royals (back)
2B Michael Massey (low back) is still day to day with most baseball activity. He saw a specialist today and has received a "couple of injections," Quatraro said, to help the recovery process. A rehab stint will depend on how he feels, so there's not a good timeline known yet.
— Anne Rogers (@anne__rogers) May 31, 2024
Massey recently went to the Injured List for his back, but there was no real indication that it would require anything other than rest. Having him visit a specialist is somewhat of a red flag, but the team seems confident in waiting to see how the injections work before doing anything else. Stay tuned.
Michael Wacha – SP Kansas City Royals (foot)
Royals' Michael Wacha had a walking boot on his left foot after being hit by a line drive from the first batter of the game. "We'll get some scans tomorrow and hopefully get some good news there," Wacha said
— Pete Grathoff (@pgrathoff) June 1, 2024
We should know more about Wacha’s condition later this weekend, but for now, it doesn’t look like he will make his next start.
San Francisco Giants – Team Update
Giants medical updates: Jung Hoo Lee will have his surgery on Tuesday in Los Angeles … Michael Conforto will start a rehab assignment tonight with Triple-A Sacramento and Nick Ahmed will join him tomorrow … Robbie Ray will pitch in an ACL game next week.
— Alex Pavlovic (@PavlovicNBCS) May 31, 2024
A lot to unpack here. Jung Hoo Lee (shoulder) is wished well with his surgery and even better in his recovery. He is a great buy-low candidate in dynasty leagues. As for Michael Conforto (hamstring), he had one hit in three at-bats last night. There is no word on how long of a rehab assignment this could be, chances are he’s back within a week. Finally, Saturday is a big day for Robbie Ray (elbow) who will throw to live batters. If all goes well there, a rehab assignment can’t be too far behind.
Luis Garcia – SP Houston Astros (Tommy John Surgery)
Luis Garcia threw 20 pitches in one simulated inning. Grae Kessinger served as the hitter. Garcia left the mound smiling after the session and shared handshakes and hugs with coaches and teammates.
— Matt Kawahara (@matthewkawahara) May 31, 2024
Garcia has been throwing bullpen sessions, and this simulated inning is a small step in the right direction. There is no plan in place for when a rehab assignment will take place.
Tommy Edman – 2B/SS/OF St. Louis Cardinals
#STLCards injury updates, per Oli Marmol:
* Tommy Edman (wrist) is taking left-handed BP for the first time.
* Steven Matz (back) is throwing a second bullpen today at Busch Stadium.
* Riley O’Brien (forearm strain) will throw a second bullpen at Busch Stadium on Sunday.
— John Denton (@JohnDenton555) May 31, 2024
There had been a long lull in any news regarding Edman, who had resumed baseball activities. Now, it would appear that he is ready to hit the left side of the plate for the next step in his recovery. This is a big step forward in his recovery and one that is happening well past the time that many thought it would be. Regardless of this, he is still unlikely to begin a rehab assignment anytime soon.
Lars Nootbaar – OF St. Louis Cardinals (oblique)
#STLCards manager Oli Marmol said Lars Nootbaar’s oblique strain is “moderate.” He said the outfielder is expected to miss “several weeks” and then he will need at least another week for a rehab assignment.
The injury opens up a steady starting role for Alex Burleson in RF.
— John Denton (@JohnDenton555) May 31, 2024
A moderate oblique strain is more sever than mild, and those typically take about three to four weeks for a recovery. Knowing this, and Nootbaar’s extensive injury-history, it’s fair to assume that he won’t be back until after the All-Star Break.
Masataka Yoshida – OF Boston Red Sox (thumb)
Yoshida started swinging off a tee yesterday and said he thinks he could start taking BP soon but obviously will depend on how he feels. He’s getting a few different custom thumb guards to try. Said he felt the pain as far back as mid April but didn’t remember when it started
— Jen McCaffrey (@jcmccaffrey) May 31, 2024
That is an interesting to note regarding Yoshida’s thumb pain. It may help to explain his struggles early on this season. The aforementioned BP session is happening today, making it an important day for his development.
Tyler O’Neill – OF Boston Red Sox (knee)
Tyler O’Neill had a cortisone shot in his knee, which he said has helped a lot. He expects to return as soon as he’s eligible on Wednesday.
— Mac Cerullo (@MacCerullo) May 31, 2024
A lot can happen between now and then, but it’s encouraging nonetheless that O’Neill believes he’ll be back.
Yu Darvish – SP San Diego Padres (hamstring)
Yu Darvish’s left hamstring still being evaluated. There is no roster move yet.
Padres not ruling out possibility he could make Tuesday start in Anaheim.— Kevin Acee (@sdutKevinAcee) May 31, 2024
There have been no updates since this news was posted. We should know more by the end of the weekend.
