Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Saturday, July 27, 2024. In today’s edition, Kodai Senga injured his calf during his 2024 debut, Riley Greene suffered a hamstring strain, and Kyle Tucker’s progress is examined. All of that and much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
Fantrax MLB Injury Report
Kodai Senga – SP New York Mets (calf)
The Mets won't know more about the severity of Senga's calf strain until he receives an MRI tomorrow, per Carlos Mendoza. They're confident this is just a strain though, and not a more serious injury.
"Hopefully it's not too serious," Mendoza said, "but they can be tricky."
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) July 27, 2024
Senga made his long-awaited return to the mound last night and was forced to exit the game in the top of the sixth inning with an injured calf. During the play, the ball is popped up, and while the Mets are trying to get in position, Senga is seen scrambling around and grabbing at his leg. The only good news here is that it wasn’t his injured shoulder that was the culprit. Still, with these types of injuries being as tricky, the team may play it safe and give him some time on the Injured List to heal.
Giancarlo Stanton – OF New York Yankees (hamstring)
The #Yankees hope to have Giancarlo Stanton back Monday against the #Phillies, per Aaron Boone. Nothing set in stone.
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) July 26, 2024
Potentially good news here on Stanton, though we never know with Aaron Boone.
Freddie Freeman – 1B Los Angeles Dodgers (personal)
Dave Roberts said he doesn’t expect Freddie Freeman to be back this series. No decision made yet on if there will be a roster move to put him on the family emergency list.
— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) July 27, 2024
The Freeman family is wished well as they attempt to push through this event.
Mike Trout – OF Los Angeles Angels (knee)
Mike Trout says the MRI was clean. He said the discomfort was just scar tissue breaking up. Will start running again as soon as it feels right, which he said could be any day.
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) July 26, 2024
The news is good concerning the clean MRI, and the hope is that he can resume his running by the end of the weekend. There is no word on if and when he will head back to his rehab assignment.
Thairo Estrada – INF San Francisco Giants (wrist)
#SFGiants roster moves:
– IF Casey Schmitt (#10) recalled from Triple-A Sacramento.
– IF Thairo Estrada placed on the 10-day Injured List with a left wrist sprain.— SFGiants (@SFGiants) July 26, 2024
This is the same wrist injury that put Estrada on the Injured List earlier this season. Chances are that this time around, he will require a longer trip to the Injured List to hopefully rid himself of this ailment.
Alex Cobb – SP San Francisco Giants (hip)
Alex Cobb will throw five innings in San Jose tonight and if all goes well he’ll return on Wednesday against the A’s. Jordan Hicks will make his last start on Sunday and then move to bullpen.
— Alex Pavlovic (@PavlovicNBCS) July 26, 2024
Great news as Cobb will make his long-awaited season debut, about a month after it was rumored that he would.
Jose Miranda – 3B Minnesota Twins (back)
Jose Miranda is in Detroit but isn’t active today. They’ll work him out on the field with an eye toward possibly activating him tomorrow, which would make sense against Skubal.

Be prepared.
Riley Greene – OF Detroit Tigers (hamstring)
"Right hammy strain," Riley Greene said. "It's Grade 1 or 2, whatever it is. It couldn have been worse. I'm glad it's not. There's really no timeline behind it. It's based on how I’m feeling, and go from there." https://t.co/zFslQqZopU
— Cody Stavenhagen (@CodyStavenhagen) July 26, 2024
Greene went on the Injured List for a hamstring strain, but the team doesn’t consider it to be a major issue. However, Greene stated that he doesn’t know if it’s a Grade 1 or a Grade 2 is a bit confusing. While he is by no means the medical professional here, the hope is that it is of a Grade 1 variety, which would limit his time away considerably.
Arizona Diamondbacks – Team Update
Torey Lovullo said Merrill Kelly (yesterday) and Eduardo Rodriguez (today) threw two innings in sim games. Kelly's next bullpen is Sunday and Rodriguez on Monday.
— Alex Weiner (@alexjweiner) July 26, 2024
Good news for both Merrill Kelly (shoulder) and Eduardo Rodriguez (shoulder), both of whom could begin their respective rehab assignments shortly after these bullpens if all goes well. Stay tuned.
Michael Harris II – OF Atlanta Braves (hamstring)
Harris, who had a setback in his hamstring recovery about 1 1/2 weeks ago, hasn't been cleared to do full-on sprinting, but he's doing bursts off the line and believes he's not far from a rehab assignment. Thinks he could be back soon after 60-day IL stint minimum in mid-August.
— David O'Brien (@DOBrienATL) July 26, 2024
Harris feeling confident in his return is one thing, but he still has to do some sprinting while remaining on point with his timing at the plate. While a rehab assignment has yet to be announced, that will also be on tap if he is to be back on August 14. There’s still a lot for him to do in the next three weeks.
Houston Astros – Team Update
From Joe Espada: Justin Verlander will throw another bullpen tomorrow. Luis Garcia threw a 35-pitch one today. Kyle Tucker is not progressing at the pace the Astros would like.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) July 26, 2024
A lot of news here. First, Justin Verlander (neck) will continue to progress, as a bullpen is on tap for him in the coming days. He has thrown multiple, so it’s unclear as to what the team is looking for, but he’ll do it nonetheless. As for Luis Garcia (elbow), this is his second go-around for him throwing bullpens, and the hope is that he can progress even further. Finally, the news on Kyle Tucker (shin) remains the same day after day. GM Dana Browne did answer some questions regarding why he’s taken so long, and he did say that Tucker did not break a bone, but rather that it was a deep bone bruise. Those types of injuries take months to heal.
Devin Williams – RP Milwaukee Brewers (back)
Brewers GM Matt Arnold met with a group of reporters today to discuss the Trade Deadline and other matters.
One news item from the session: All-a star closer Devin Williams is expected back in “the next few days.” He must clear one more rehab outing first.
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) July 26, 2024
Williams threw a scoreless outing last night, which could indicate that his return is imminent. Additionally, Williams also posted on his Instagram account a message indicating that he would see us in Milwaukee. While he’s unlikely to pitch today, perhaps a Sunday or Monday return to the mound is in the works. While anything is possible, the biggest takeaway is that he is back.
Christian Yelich – OF Milwaukee Brewers (back)
Pat Murphy on the news that Christian Yelich will try rehab for his back injury: “Obviously he’s going to need surgery, so anything he does between now and then is a bonus. He wants to play very badly.”
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) July 26, 2024
It looks like, as suspected, surgery is inevitable for Yelich.
Tommy Edman – INF/OF St. Louis Cardinals
Tommy Edman, who is on a minor-league rehab assignment, is expected to have a day off tonight and DH on Saturday. It's not clear when he may play the field.
— Lynn Worthy (@LWorthySports) July 26, 2024
What a disastrous season it has been for Tommy Edman. His surgery was announced as an oversight in the offseason, his return was estimated to be in May, and now, here we are in late July, and he is getting days off in his rehab assignment because they don’t want to overwork him. He still hasn’t played in the field at each of the positions he is expected to play when called back up, so expect another week or two, barring any setbacks.
