MLB Injury Report – The Dodgers lose another one

Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Saturday, August 17, 2024. In today’s edition, Tytler Glasnow heads to the Injured List for bicep tendinitis, Alex Bregman will miss the weekend with swelling in his elbow, and Oneil Cruz may miss some time because of an injured ankle. All of that, plus much more, including a ton of Tigers and Twins updates, in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report

Tyler Glasnow – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (elbow)

Glasnow was placed on the 15-day Injured List following a flare-up in his elbow after a recent bullpen session. He ended up having some scans done which revealed the tendinitis and caused some concern. For now, the team believes that he will be ready to pitch following the end of his stint on the Injured List, but that’s hardly set in stone and more will need to be seen beforehand. This is a reminder that this team is hyper-focused on the postseason, so if a quick return jeopardizes that, then they will allow for whatever needs to be done to ensure that come the playoffs, they are ready to try and win a championship.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (shoulder)

Yamamoto remains on track to return to the Dodgers in the middle of September, following a lengthy rehab assignment that will hopefully begin next week.

Los Angeles Dodgers – Team Update

Great news here on both Tommy Edman (wrist) and Max Muncy (oblique), both giving the Dodgers a boost in the right direction.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. – INF/OF New York Yankees (UCL)

This is a very encouraging development, as there was some concern that Chisholm would need to have surgery to fix the problem. Instead, it looks as if he will need only rest to return next month to help the Yankees get into and advance through the playoffs. There were also some comments from Jazz himself saying that he feels like he could be back when the ten days on the Injured List are over, but it remains to be seen if that is or will be the case.

Pittsburgh Pirates – Team Update

This was an unfortunate development for Oneil Cruz (ankle) and Andrew McCutchen (knee), as the team is now left scrambling. There weren’t many updates after the game, other than that both were being looked at by the team and that there was some concern that Cruz may have reinjured the leg that kept him out of action for most of last season. In (possibly) related news, the Pirates have also recalled shortstop Alika Smith, prompting some speculation that Cruz may be headed to the Injured List. Stay tuned.

Alex Bregman – 3B Houston Astros (elbow)

The hope here is that the reports are correct and that Bregman can return in a few days, though the team has had their fair share of injury mishaps and misdiagnosed ailments all season long.

Kodai Senga – SP New York Mets (calf)

From the sounds of things, there is a chance that Senga could be ready to pitch in the postseason, but it also feels like they would be forcing the issue to make something happen. Either way, a reminder that he remains out for the rest of the season.

Starling Marte – OF New York Mets (hamstring)

Marte did play through the entire game last night, going 0-for-3, which should make him available for a return this Sunday, though nothing has yet to be solidified. Either way, he is on the precipice of returning to help the Mets.

Detroit Tigers – Team Update

Big update here from the Tigers, as they tend to clump their news together. Riley Greene (hamstring) has played in just one rehab game and went hitless in three at-bats. It would seem possible that he will be there for the better part of next week before hopefully returning to the Tigers. As for Colt Keith (hamstring), chances are that he will return to the Tigers’ lineup within the next day or two, as this doesn’t seem very serious at all. Casey Mize (hamstring) has looked sharp in his prior appearances but still needs to stretch himself out over a longer period before returning. Additionally, Reese Olson (shoulder) throwing from flat ground is a good step forward for him, but he still has a long way to go. Finally, Wencel Perez (oblique) continues to progress, but there are no updates on a possible return date just yet.

Matt McLain – INF Cincinnati Reds (ribs)

A reminder that his rehab date was supposed to begin on August 12, and his setback will cost him some time. With a resumption of swinging a bat, he may need a few more days to prepare himself for that rehab assignment, which could still leave him with possibly three weeks of in-season gameplay for the Reds if all goes well.

Trevor Williams – SP Washington Nationals (shoulder)

As mentioned, this was a big step forward for Williams, who hasn’t pitched in a game since the end of May. If he does return to the mound before the end of the season, it may be for one or two starts, just for some peace-of-mind type of mentality as he heads into free agency.

Carlos Correa – SS Minnesota Twins (foot)

This seems like good news for Correa, who can run at full speed, but until he can do so without pain the next day, he’s stuck in purgatory without a chance to return. There were reports of him needing new shoes, so chances are that could help him progress.

Joe Ryan – SP Minnesota Twins (shoulder)

This is likely not the second opinion that Ryan was looking for, as his injury could cost him the rest of the season.

Byron Buxton – OF Minnesota Twins (hip)

The belief and hope is that the cortisone shot will allow him to feel better and get himself back on track to return next week.

Brooks Lee – SS Minnesota Twins (shoulder)

Following his cortisone shot, it looks like Lee is beginning to ramp up activity as he tries to get back to the Twins.

Christian Yelich – OF Milwaukee Brewers (back)

The operation was described as “a discectomy of some kind”, but also sounds like it will help alleviate the problems that have plagued Yelich for many years. He has said that he plans on returning next season fully healthy and ready to go. The hope is that he can do so and finally live up to the potential he’s been unable to show because of his inability to stay healthy.
