Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Thursday, August 1, 2024. In today’s edition, Jordan Westburg suffers what could be a season-ending injury, Mookie Betts gets his first estimated timeline for a return, and Christian Yelich clears the air. All of that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
Fantrax MLB Injury Report
Jordan Westburg – INF Baltimore Orioles (hand)
Jordan Westburg has a right hand fracture, manager Brandon Hyde said.
Orioles are hoping he’s back by the end of the regular season.
“It’s a bittersweet attitude right now,” Hyde said after losing Westburg on a day Jackson Holliday his his first career homer.
— Jacob Calvin Meyer (@jcalvinmeyer) July 31, 2024
A very unfortunate event yesterday, as Westburg was having a breakout season. After getting hit on the hand midway through the game, the team hopes that he can return by the end of the season. That may seem like an advantageous outlook, given the body part where the fracture took place. If this does end his season, Westburg would finish with eighteen home runs in what should be considered a fantastic year.
Mookie Betts – INF/OF Los Angeles Dodgers (hand)
Per Dave Roberts, Mookie Betts has started taking batting practice off a coach. Might just be sim game at-bats for Betts and not a rehab assignment before he returns to #Dodgers. Could be "couple weeks" before he is ready
— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) July 31, 2024
This is the first real update that we have received where a projected timeline was offered. Betts has been improving daily, and this report suggests that he may not even need a traditional rehab assignment. That could mean that he returns in approximately two weeks. Though plans change daily, it’s encouraging to note that the end is near and that we may get six good weeks of Betts.
Max Muncy – 3B Los Angeles Dodgers (hand)
#Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Max Muncy “had a breakthrough” in his recovery yesterday and will take some swings tomorrow.
— Juan Toribio (@juanctoribio) July 31, 2024
The breakthrough was a result of a chiropractic adjustment, which allegedly made the pain go away. For him to cross this hurdle, Muncy needed any oblique discomfort to dissipate, and he might now be able to take the next step with some swings. Once he’s able to face live pitching, he will undoubtedly require a rehab assignment as he last played in the middle of May.
Gerrit Cole – SP New York Yankees (fatigue)
Gerrit Cole reported no issues after throwing today. He’s expected to throw a bullpen Friday and will likely start this weekend vs the Jays #yankees
— Meredith Marakovits (@M_Marakovits) July 31, 2024
Cole had recently suffered some fatigue after complaining that he wasn’t able to bounce back the way that he was once able to. It’s good news that he was able to throw yesterday and that a bullpen is planned for Friday. How he feels today will have a big impact on whether or not the team continues to push for tomorrow’s bullpen session.
Max Kepler – OF Minnesota Twins (head)
Max Kepler exited today's game with a head injury. He was hit in the helmet by Francisco Alvarez's throw to second at the end of the fourth inning, left the game an inning later. #MNTwins
— DanHayesMLB (@DanHayesMLB) July 31, 2024
Kepler struck out and moved forward, which caused him to be in the way of Francisco Alvarez’s throw to catch the runner going to second base. He was called for interference and the runner was called out. Kepler argued that call, but it was obvious that he was in the wrong.
Christian Yelich – OF Milwaukee Brewers (back)
Yelich goes into greater detail about the situation he is facing here, but generally speaking, he wanted to clear the air and reiterate that all of this season and the beginning of next season are not in jeopardy. Essentially, surgery is on the table as a possible solution, but it is not a guarantee. And while it seems like the most likely of options, he reassured everyone that his biggest goal right now is to get himself back onto the field and help the Brewers make the playoffs. Whether or not that happens is a different story altogether, but his optimism is admired.
Brandon Nimmo – OF New York Mets (foot)
No worries on Brandon Nimmo's foot, per Carlos Mendoza. He could have stayed in the game and is day to day.
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) July 31, 2024
A very good update here on Nimmo, as he left Wednesday’s game with a bruised foot after fouling a ball off of it. The Mets are off today, so there looks to be a good chance he will play in Friday’s game, though all updates should be out there soon.
Daulton Varhso – OF Toronto Blue Jays (heat)
UPDATE: OF Daulton Varsho was removed from today's game with heat illness symptoms.
— Toronto Blue Jays (@BlueJays) July 31, 2024
A good reminder that baseball players are human beings and that they do suffer from things like this. Here’s hoping he can return on Friday.
Joe Musgrove – SP San Diego Padres (elbow)
The Padres placed Stephen Kolek on the IL with forearm tendonitis. Austin Davis was DFA'd and Logan Gillaspie optioned. Those moves cleared roster space for Scott, Hoeing and Pérez.
Meanwhile, Joe Musgrove will make a rehab appearance at an affiliate Sunday, Mike Shildt says.
— AJ Cassavell (@AJCassavell) July 31, 2024
Fantastic news on Musgrove who is on his way back to the Padres. He has spent a lot of time on the Injured List with his ailing elbow, but any late-season contributions he can give a team that needs starting pitching is a bonus.
Fernando Tatis Jr. – OF (right forearm stress reaction)
It’s great that the doctors all have been giving positive feedback. The trickiest part of a stress reaction is that if a return happens too soon, it could turn into something cracked or fractured. That’s been the reason behind his extended absence with minimal information because rest is what’s needed most. At this point, fantasy owners should be thrilled if he is back by September.
Liam Hendriks – RP Boston Red Sox (elbow)
Liam Hendriks threw a 35 pitch bullpen yesterday with fastballs, changes & breaking balls. His surgery was a year ago Friday. He’s going to Texas to meet with his surgeon and hoping to get cleared by him to start facing hitters. He’s been throwing two bullpens a week for a month
— Jen McCaffrey (@jcmccaffrey) July 31, 2024
Look for updates in the coming days to inform us if he is cleared to face live batters. If that’s the case, that would be a big hurdle for him to clear.
Kenley Jansen – RP Boston Red Sox (back)
Cora says Kenley slipped and tweaked his lower back. They’ll see how he feels on Friday and go from there.
— Mac Cerullo (@MacCerullo) July 31, 2024
Jansen pitched through this injury during yesterday’s game and recorded a close-to-clean inning of work. The hope here is that he can return within the next few days and avoid a trip to the Injured List. Stay tuned.
Richie Palacios – OF Tampa Bay Rays (knee)
#Rays Cash said Palacios has a hyperextended right knee, is considered day to day, they’ll see how he feels tomorrow before flight to Houston
— Marc Topkin (@TBTimes_Rays) July 31, 2024
Consider Palacios DTD until we hear otherwise, as it all depends on how he feels the day afterward.
