Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Friday, July 26, 2024. In today’s report, Mason Miller will be injured through the trade deadline, Christian Yelich opts for rest, and Triston Casas will begin a rehab assignment shortly. All of that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
Fantrax MLB Injury Report
Mason Miller – SP/RP Oakland Athletics (finger)
Here’s what A’s manager Mark Kotsay had to say about Mason Miller’s fractured pinky and the reporting provided by @MartinJGallegos earlier today. pic.twitter.com/bMpYeHnr7O

This is an unfortunate injury for the A’s here as Miller had been the focus of trade talks surrounding the team and now may be someone that the team will reluctantly retain. While the word reluctant is somewhat unfair given his performance, it pertains simply to the return he would have garnered in any deal. There is currently no timeline for his return.
Mike Trout – OF Los Angeles Angels (knee)
No news today on Mike Trout.
He was to be re-evaluated today and there’s no report yet on how that went.
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) July 25, 2024
There was supposed to be an update yesterday as the training staff was reevaluating him after a setback. A lack of news does not necessarily mean that the situation is more dire than it was had there been an update.
Christian Yelich – OF Milwaukee Brewers (back)
Christian Yelich intends to rest and rehab his back rather than undergo surgery that would have ended his season, a source tells @TheAthletic. Offseason surgery is a strong possibility, the source says.
— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) July 25, 2024
The decision for Yelich to rest and rehab gives the Brewers a chance to hopefully utilize his services in the wake of a playoff run. Chances are that the odds of him being able to return because of rest were good enough to take this route but with offseason surgery a strong possibility, that health is likely unsustainable. One would have to guess that if the Brewers are unable to trade for offensive help or if they fall out of contention, Yelich will ultimately opt for the surgery earlier than when the season would have ended.
Triston Casas – 1B Boston Red Sox (ribs)
Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas is taking full batting practice and could begin a rehab assignment by the end of the week, according to CBO Craig Breslow on @TheGregHillShow. pic.twitter.com/Y3uZDsR6q2

Great news here on Casas, who is seemingly on the verge of starting a rehab assignment in the near future. Chances are that it will be a lengthy one to ensure that his insides can sustain maximum power over a period of time alongside gaining his timing back. That being said, if all goes well without any setbacks, a mid-August return seems feasible.
Giancarlo Stanton – OF New York Yankees (hamstring)
There are still no decisions on Giancarlo Stanton. He was/is doing more work on the field today.
"I think he's feeling towards the end of it." – Aaron Boone.
The manager didn't rule out Boston but said he's not necessarily expecting that. #Yankees https://t.co/zdN4p9xDdD
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) July 24, 2024
The on-again, off-again nature of Aaron Boone and his updates knows no bounds. One day Stanton is on the verge of coming back, and the next there is no urgency for a return. It’s hard to know exactly what lies ahead for Stanton, other than his status for a return seems to be on the verge of it being next week and not necessarily now.
Michael Harris II – Atlanta Braves (hamstring)
At one point during his build-up, Michael Harris II (hamstring strain) felt something in his hamstring. The Braves had to back off of him for a bit, which is why he won't return until later than they perhaps had hoped. (He's on the 60-day, so he can't return until mid-August)
— Justin Toscano (@JustinCToscano) July 25, 2024
Now we know the reasoning behind the inactivity in Harris’ recovery. He was spotted running on the field, but he hadn’t upgraded that act to sprinting. With the setback in mind, the Braves put him on the 60-day Injured List and he is unable to return until August 14. It will be interesting to see if he can progress any further before a rehab assignment in the (hopefully) near future.
Jorge Mateo – INF Baltimore Orioles
#Orioles' Jorge Mateo will be out "a significant amount of time," per manager Brandon Hyde.
"It's gonna be a while right now. It's so swollen and sore that it's gonna take some time trying to get the swelling out, and then he's gonna get some second opinions."
— 🌱paige🌱 (@paige_leckie) July 25, 2024
Matoe missing the next little while does open the door for the Orioles to call up one or both of their top prospects. For now, Connor Norby will get a chance at consistent playing time, but both Coby Mayo and Jackson Holliday are bound to get a chance at some point if they’re not traded. As for Mateo, surgery is off the table for now, but it has been considered an option if the rest that he takes doesn’t do the job.
Bryan Reynolds – OF Pittsburgh Pirates (bereavement)
We have placed OF Bryan Reynolds on the Major League Bereavement List.
We will add another player to the roster for tomorrow's game and will announce that move accordingly.
— Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) July 25, 2024
The Reynolds family is wished well.
Jeffrey Springs – SP Tampa Bay Rays (Tommy John Surgery)
Jeffrey Springs fanned 4 over 5 innings of work as part of his MLB Rehab Assignment on Thursday evening at the DBAP.https://t.co/rgkOdTmlvy
— Durham Bulls (@DurhamBulls) July 26, 2024
Springs did finish the game surrendering three runs over five innings of work while striking out those four batters. He did work his largest pitch count to date, tossing 82 pitches over that span, which should align closely with what the Rays expect from him whenever he does return. The hope is that this is his final outing and that he can make his 2024 debut for the Rays shortly, though seeing how it is the Rays, anything is possible.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa – INF/OF Toronto Blue Jays (knee)
Isiah Kiner-Falefa will begin his Triple-A rehab assignment Saturday if all goes well over the next couple of days, John Schneider says. #BlueJays
— Keegan Matheson (@KeeganMatheson) July 25, 2024
This is good news for the Jays, who surely need his versatility and on-base prowess. Out for all of July, Kiner-Falefa could be back within a week, but the speed of his ability to get to this point makes one wonder if he will need a longer rehab outing. Look for him to possibly be the team’s new shortstop while Bo Bichette is out with injury.
