MLB Injury Report: Twin-Bill of Injury News

Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Thursday, July 18, 2024. In today’s edition, Carlos Correa was forced to miss the All-Star Game because of a recurring injury, Royce Lewis seems poised to return, and Tyler Glasnow could be back as soon as the weekend. All of that and much more in today’s MLB Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report for Thursday, July 18, 2024

Carlos Correa – SS Minnesota Twins (foot)

The move is official as Correa will miss playing in the All-Star Game due to a bout of plantar fasciitis. It was revealed earlier that his current state is not as bad as last year’s case where he missed significant time and his production was poor. The hope is that he can avoid the Injured List altogether and rejoin the team, but yesterday’s removal could be an indication that he needs time away from the Twins in order to heal.

Royce Lewis – 3B Minnesota Twins (right abductor strain)

From the sounds of it, Royce Lewis feels that he is ready to return, but the team wants to take things slowly. In retrospect, he has been injured before, and returning earlier than he should either sets the team back a bit or could further injure his already ailing groin. Additionally, he has suffered from injuries all over his body in his career, so the team would be wise to be 110% sure that he is ready to return. All that being said, he seems to be closer than first anticipated.

Tyler Glasnow – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (back)

It looks like Glasnow will be returning this weekend or shortly afterward, which is great news for a team that is struggling for some stability on the mound. Be prepared.

MJ Melendez – OF Kansas City Royals (ankle)

Melendez injured himself while running to first base on a ground ball on Sunday. He was immediately removed from the game, and now we know the severity of the ailment is a sprained left ankle. There was no word on if it is anticipated that he will miss more than the ten-day minimum, but for now, consider him out for the foreseeable future.

Houston Astros – Team Update

Victor Caratini started his rehab assignment last night by going 0-for-3 with a strikeout in his first game back. He may not need a lot of time before getting called back up to the Astros for depth. As for Garcia, he recently had himself a disastrous rehab start for Double-A Corpus Christi where he surrendered four runs on three hits and a walk in only 1.1 innings of work. That was enough to shut him down and pulled from this assignment in order to restructure what was wrong and hopefully find an answer. There’s a significant chance that he won’t pitch for the Astros this year if this setback is a significant one. He will continue to throw while working out and recovering with the team.

Chicago Cubs – Team Update

Mike Tauchman (groin) was in his first game action since injuring himself a month ago. He finished the game 0-for-2 with one strikeout, but the fact that he was playing was a good thing. He may not need much more time to rehab. As for Julian Merrywethaer (ribs) he has been out of action for months with a stress fracture in his ribs, but could return shortly after the All-Star Break. The Cubs’ bullpen is by no means set in stone, and he could find his way into some saves down the road.

Tyler Mahle – SP Texas Rangers (Tommy John Surgery)

This was the third rehab performance from Mahle as he works his way to return to baseball following last year’s surgery. Ironically, all three of his outings have been two innings in length where he surrendered one hit. This last one, however, was his best where he struck out five of the six batters he faced. He’ll look to keep this momentum going and possibly build up a stronger workload next time out.

Tommy Edman – INF/OF St. Louis Cardinals (wrist, ankle)

Edman has gone 4-for-14 thus far in his four rehab games, and there is no timetable for his return. The article in question here discusses his mindset of returning from a major injury and how much longer a road it has been for him since he was originally believed to be ready earlier this season. There was one important nugget in here, noting that he has yet to play in the field, so there is that hurdle that he needs to clear before his 2024 debut. That being said, it would seem like a late-July or possibly even an early-August debut might be what’s in his future.
