MLB Injury Report: Two Braves Headed for Extended IL Stints?

Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Monday, July 22, 2024. In today’s edition, the Braves lost two key pieces of their arsenal, as both Ozzie Albies and Max Fried will be out for a significant amount of time. Also, Julio Rodriguez injured his ankle, Reese Olson injured his shoulder, and Mike Trout looks to begin a rehab assignment. All of this and so much more is in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report

Julio Rodriguez – OF Seattle Mariners (ankle)

Rodriguez crashed into the wall while tracking down a fly ball yesterday. He twisted and turned his ankle in the process, causing discomfort, and was immediately removed from the game. While he seems to have avoided anything serious, he will still undergo an MRI later today as the team has said that they will take every precaution before he plays again.

Carlos Correa – SS Minnesota Twins (foot)

This is the second time in two years that Correa has lost time due to plantar fasciitis, though the first time for his foot. It’s a significant development in having him receive the platelet-rich plasma, as once again it’s a serious issue that needs addressing. His time on the Injured List was retroactive to a few days earlier which suggests that the team doesn’t anticipate a long absence.

Ozzie Albies – 2B Atlanta Braves (wrist)

A devastating injury here for the Braves and fantasy owners everywhere. Albies will essentially miss most, if not all of the remainder of the regular season. While his recovery could be swift and speedy, his injury is on a part of the body that makes it difficult to recapture any power lost due to the breakage. He is a drop in most formats other than in dynasty leagues. The team will likely call up hot-hitting prospect Nacho Alvarez in his place.

Max Fried – SP Atlanta Braves (forearm neuritis)

The good news here is that there is no damage to the soft tissue, tendon, and/or ligaments. Still, it’s a concerning injury in that it could lead to a major injury if he rushes back. There is no timetable for a return.

Royce Lewis – 3B Minnesota Twins (right abductor)

Lewis said afterward that if this were the playoffs, the team would let him play. Let’s just hope that this isn’t a case where a player pushes the narrative for his own health but is more concerned with just playing than doing what’s right.

Jose Miranda – 3B Minnesota Twins (back)

The hope is that this is true and that Miranda can not only return soon but also near the unstoppable force he was prior to the injury. Regardless, it sounds like he is close to returning and should do so within the week if all goes well.

Los Angeles Dodgers – Team Update

Both Tyler Glasnow (back) and Clayton Kershaw (shoulder) should be back this week. Be prepared.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (triceps)

A very concerning statement here. His goal to return means that this could be a season-ending injury if there are any setbacks or even as it stands now. Furthermore, the Dodgers are known to play for the postseason. It’s entirely possible that they slowly bring him along and have him prepare for a postseason run by taking things slowly and conserving his innings pitched.

Reese Olson – SP Detroit Tigers (shoulder)

Olson was pulled after just 30 pitches on Saturday when he said that his shoulder was bugging him. The team has said that the 48 hours after that would be crucial in deciding exactly what would be the next steps for him. While he was placed on the Injured List less than a day after being pulled, it remains to be seen if there is more analysis to come. Regardless, he is a big piece of their future, and any significant injury should be taken seriously.

Devin Williams – RP Milwaukee Brewers (back)

This is the second outing for Williams in his rehab, and he’s now struck out four batters over those two innings. He’s getting closer to a return, and relievers don’t usually need as much time as starters do to prepare while on their rehab assignments. However, he probably needs at least two more appearances before returning to the Brewers.

Ryan Pepiot – SP Tampa Bay Rays (knee)

The team is unsure exactly how the injury and infection happened but acknowledged its significance by admitting him into the hospital. He was given antibiotics and an IV to help the swelling subside and will travel to St.Petersburg once he is discharged to allow for the inflammation to go away. It is not expected that this trip to the Injured List will last longer than the minimum of fifteen days.

Jeffrey Springs – SP Tampa Bay Rays (Tommy John Surgery)

The next rehab start will be the ninth for Springs who is seemingly close to a return to the Rays. Through 11 outings (including the Complex League), he has thrown 32 strikeouts in 27.0 innings pitched, which is a significant number in its own right.

Drew Rasmussen – SP Tampa Bay Rays (right flexor strain)

It’s a very interesting note here that Rasmussen has changed his delivery and arsenal. He has pitched just one inning thus far on his road to recovery.

Kyle Tucker – OF Houston Astros (shin)

Tucker did this twice over the weekend on both days. It’s a good sign that he is intensifying his defensive drills as he inches his way toward a return for the Astros. It would appear that a rehab assignment would be necessary first.

Texas Rangers – Team Update

Josh Jung (wrist) took in some batting practice this weekend, which should be considered a big step forward IF his wrist feels fine the day(s) afterward. He’s done similar things like this in the past, but he hadn’t been able to progress further because of the recurring inflammation. As for Dane Dunning (shoulder), he threw three nearly perfect innings on July 20 and could be activated soon. Finally, Max Scherzer (arm) suffered through arm fatigue during and after his outing on Saturday and his condition going forward will be monitored closely. He will have a throwing session later his week to determine if he will make his next start.

Kodai Senga – SP New York Yankees (shoulder)

Be prepared.

Joe Musgrove – SP San Diego Padres (elbow)

Musgrove recently threw a 30-pitch bullpen and used more than just fastballs from his arsenal. This is good news as he professes toward a potential return. While we don’t yet know a return date, he is increasing the intensity of his delivery and is trending in the right direction.

Mike Trout – OF Los Angeles Angels (knee)

Fantastic news for Trout as he will likely begin his rehab assignment tomorrow.
